I stand for you, as you stood for me, Because as we all know, Freedom isn’t free. A long time ago, I was a young soldier too. Back then there was no “Welcome Home”, And certainly no “Thank You”. I’m here to make sure that history doesn’t repeat For it is only by the Grace of God that I stand here today, on my own two feet. You see, I have scars, even a blown-out knee, Yet I stand with this flag, Because your service, your sacrifice, Means that much to me. I pray that you'll come home, alive and whole, I’ll pray if you come home flag-draped, In a cargo hold. I thank you young soldier, for all that you do. You stood for me. Today, I stand for you.

When Americans - especially those here in the Southern States - think of small towns, the images that come to mind are very much like the town of Portal, Georgia. Portal is in Bulloch County...you go through Statesboro to Hopeulikeit and turn left. Portal's sons and daughters in middle and high school still share a single school. It's smalltown America. And it's where Patriots and Heroes like Brock Chavers are born and raised. This week the hearts of Portal's citizens are heavy. So is mine. SGT Chavers is my brother in the Profession of Arms. He graduated high school in 2002 and joined the Guard during a time of conflict. He knew the dangers and he wrote America a check and signed it...paid to the order of the People of the United States, for any amount up to and including his life. He drove more than halfway across the state to perform his monthly UTA's. And in a dirty, dusty, hot and unforgiving place 7000 miles from home, he gave his all while working and sweating to ensure our safety and at the same time trying to share the freedoms we enjoy with an oppressed people. I'm proud to call Brock Chavers my brother and I share with the Chavers family, the Portal Community and the Georgia National Guard family in their grief. SGT Brock Chavers, we will not forget. Thank you.
