During World War II, McMahon was a fighter pilot in the United States Marine Corps serving as a flight instructor and test pilot. He was a decorated pilot (six Air Medals) and was discharged in 1946, remaining in the reserves.
After college, McMahon returned to active duty. He was sent to Korea in February 1952. He flew unarmed OE-1 Bird Dogs on 85 tactical air control and artillery spotting missions. He remained in the Marine Corps Reserve, retiring with the rank of Colonel in 1966 and was then commissioned as a Brigadier General in the California Air National Guard.

Our sincere condolences to the family and friends of BGen Edward "Ed" McMahon, Jr., CANG & USMC, WWII Veteran. May God help you though this difficult time and sorrow. He is
one of America's Heroes that will never be forgotten.
Rest Safely and Securely in God's Loving Arms, Edward.
Going home, going home,
I'm just going home.
Quiet-like, slip away-
I'll be going home.
It's not far, just close by;
Jesus is the Door;
Work all done, laid aside,
Fear and grief no more.
Friends are there, waiting now.
He is waiting, too.
See His smile! See His hand!
He will lead me through.
Morning
Star lights the way;
Restless dream all done;
Shadows gone, break of day,
Life has just begun.
Every tear wiped away,
Pain and sickness gone;
Wide awake there with Him!
Peace goes on and on!
Going home, going home,
I'll be going home.
See the Light! See the Sun!
I'm just going home.

BGen Ed McMahon, THANK YOU Hero for your service to this country and for the many many laughs and smiles we have all enjoyed over the years. You were truly one of the Great Ones Sir!! To the McMahon family and friends,,,I am SO sorry for your loss, I pray that God will fold you in his arms and comfort you with the thought that your loved one has joined God and his brothers in that place prepared especially for heros. And that he really is not gone, as long as anyone remembers him he will always be with us, and one day you will see him again...this I know. God bless you all.

I Did Not Die
Do not stand at my grave and forever weep. I am not there; I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow. I am the diamond glints on snow. I am the sunlight on ripened grain. I am the gentle autumn’s rain. When you awaken in the morning’s hush I am the swift uplifting rush Of quiet birds in circled flight. I am the soft stars that shine at night. Do not stand at my grave and forever cry. I am not there. I did not die.

As a son of a McMahon, with relationship to the clans of both Irish counties, I was immensely proud to read the biography of this kind and gracious gentleman. Unfortunately, in life I only knew him from his broadcasting career. I regret that I will be unable to shake his hand and say:
Thank you, BGen Edward McMahon, Jr., for your service to our country. You will forever be remembered as a Great American Hero.
May God bless and comfort the family and friends of Edward McMahon. Your loved one has left this world a better place through his service to our country. He has warmed our hearts with his gracious persona, great sense of humor and everlasting dignity.

Our debt to the Heroic men and Valiant women in the service of our country can never be repaid . They have earned our undying gratitude. America will never forget their sacrifices (President Harry S. Truman)
During these days of many trials and tribulations that our land of the free are facing, let us remember to hold our heads up high in remembrance for those who gave their life for our freedom and those that are still in harms way for this cause. Pray for the brokenhearted and proclaim victory for those who are held captive. Lord, You are the light of the world and we declare You to be Lord over every nation. We know your light shines in darkness and the darkness does not always comprehend, but we also know You light will always prevail. Amen. Chaplin, Lorraine Richmond.
