I have 3 older brothers. All spent time in the military. One was Navy, one was Army and one was Air Force. Only one served in war time but served state side because he knew how to type. The others served in times of peace. My son came home one summer day and said "Guess what! I joined the Army Reserve. This will help with college." And I was okay with that. That was 1998. Then came 2001. In 2003 he went to Iraq in the first wave and helped take the Bagdad Airport. I had no idea where he was or what he was doing. No word for several weeks. When he came home in March 2004, I thought it was over. He was done. But no, he re upped his enlistment and volunteered to go again. He left in January 2007 for training and is somewhere in the sandbox once again. I am active not only in the FRG but also in a civilian support group that includes mom's, wives and girlfriends of those serving. We support each other in many ways. Regular meetings are a great help in venting and listening to one another. Midnight phone calls happen too. My heart hurts for the families of those who are wounded and killed. The Patriot Guard helps me feel like I can help them by honoring the family of those who give all.
