When my first cousin and best friend Capt. Robert C. Swanson, USAF, was killed in a T38 training accident in 1978, my lasting memory of his funeral is leaving the church, and seeing the honor guard of four T38 pilots standing at attention by the open doors of the hearse, saluting, with tears running down their faces.
Fast forward to 2006, and watching the evening news, I saw the vile protestors of Westboro, standing on the steps of a church, to greet the mourners at a military funeral with their chants and signs.
The anger I felt was indescribable. Thank God I read about the PGR shortly thereafter.
I didn't serve then....The PGR allows me to serve now.
