Born I Corpus Christi, 12/26/52. Moved to Refugio in 1959 after my dad had to take a medical retirement from CCNAS. He worked Civil Service there when he got out of the Navy after WWll. He served on the USS Saratoga in the Pacific. One of the attacks the Japs made on the Saratoga is where he was injured. In 1966, after my dad was given a 100% disability by the VA, he bought 4 acres and built a house outside Victoria. A big part of my heart was ripped out on 2/10/95 when he was called to his reward. Older Brother served in the USAF 1970 thru 1974. A very deep respect for those serving in the military was instilled in me at a very young age. A respect I still have for them today.
I was going to college here in Victoria in 1973 when I was hired on as an operator for Union Carbide. We worked 8 hour shifts back then. I worked in a gas cracking/distillation unit. I liked sitting and listening to the older guys talk about "the big war" and Korea. My draft number back in '72 was 361. Two of my buddies in college were under 10. They joined, I didn't. That still in one of my biggest regrets in life.
I worked as an operator until 1986 when I transferred into a plastics lab. We make medium and high voltage wire insulation shields and conductor shields. I test it to make sure it's good enough to sell. Still doing that today, 33 years later.
DOW Chemical Company bought out Union Carbide in 2001 and it's been a living hell ever since. UCC did their best to take care of their employees (until our last CEO), but DOW absolutely doesn't care about you. Guess that's why most of their facilities are union and ours isn't. I'm looking forward to retirement or finding another job so I can leave that place. I like the work, just can't stand the management.
I've always been an outdoors person. Fishing, hunting, hiking, camping and just sitting in a chair at night looking at the stars. Back in the 90's I finally bought my firs bike. A Goldwing. Life really took a turn for the better for me. I loved riding. Then a buddy of mine let me have his Fat Boy for a weekend while he was gone. It was love at first ride! Now I ride a 1998 Heritage Classic. And it's a true Harley. Black and chrome. For me, colors don't look good on a Harley. Black and chrome is what they are supposed to look like. Just my opinion. I ride every chance I get. I have the older Screamin' Eagle pipes on it and it's an awesome sound that comes out! I love the sound but I especially love the "brotherhood" of bikers that is out there.
I saw the Guard at Cpl. Aguilar's funeral here in Victoria and knew that was what I wanted to do. You are my heroes and I look forward to riding my first mission with you.
