I was born in Canada and moved to Tennessee when I was a young kid, then moved to northern Michigan when I was 12. I became a naturalized American citizen in 1978. Though I never wore the uniform that so many of you so proudly wore in the service of our great country, I proudly wear the uniform of our local vol. fire dept. Ya, for the last 30+ years, I’ve been the guy running into the burning building as everyone else with any sense ran out.
My full time job for the past 20 years or so has been that of an over the road (OTR) truck driver. I have literally driven end to end on most major highways in these 48 continental United States and three Canadian provinces, and have traveled over 3 million miles total.
As far as riding on two wheels, I’ve been riding bikes since I needed cheap transportation during college, and I’m now riding my tenth bike, a 2005 Harley Davidson Ultra Classic. I am proud to place my bike in line with all of you to honor our returning heroes.
My son has just recently been promoted to Captain in the MI Nat. Guard, and will soon be returning to Iraq for a second tour. His full time job is with the Nat. Park Service as a wildland fire fighter. He is one of those guys that you see on television fighting the large forest and wild fires that plague our forests and grasslands.
I ride in memory of the 343 fire fighters and other rescue personnel, who died on 9-11-2001 at “Ground Zero” NYC as well as the heroes who have given of themselves to protect out country. The true meanings of that word “Hero” changed for me on that morning when I watched the towers fall, knowing that there were hundreds of rescue people rushing up to put out the fires and rescue the people trapped above the flames. The words “Some gave all, and all gave some.” applies to the brave fire fighters of NYC as well as our servicemen who fight, and have fought for freedom around the world. I was there at “Ground Zero” shortly after 9-11 and the sights, sounds and smells will stay with me forever.
Not sure what else to add here, but if anyone wants to know more al ya gotta do is ask.
Mik
