08 Mar 2006 3:10 PM Alert
Smithville Recon Report:

Ok, folks. I made the entire ride today from the Denny's to Smithville and up to the cemetery. Here's the results:

Denny's: At the intersection of E Ben White (Hwy 71) and Riverside. If you're coming from the East, take a left on Riverside then an immediate right. This will bring you into the back of the Denny's parking lot. This is also the way we'll be leaving so we can catch the red light and all stay together. I also spoke to the manager this moring (Andrew, I didn't know you'd already called. Thanks!) and advised her we would have upwards of 20 people there tomorrow morning. They are closing one section of the diner just for us and bringing in an extra wait person to serve us. Again, if you plan on eating, get there early enough that you don't have to scarf down your food and still make KSU (kickstands up) at 8a. (I've been advised by an awesome lady here in Austin that her and her sister are making fresh blueberry muffins for us and will meet us at the Denny's)

The route:
There are several red lights until we get past the Airport and again when we get around Bastrop. If by chance any of the group gets caught by a light, the lead (me) will slow down the rest of the riders to give the rest a chance to catch up. No riders left behind! Please, don't try to beat a red light in fear of losing us. You won't lose us and the risk is NOT worth it. We'll wait for everyone.
The ride took me 45 minutes and that included one fuel stop and a delay in Bastrop while the DPS closed the highway to do recreation of what was apparently a recent fatality accident. Reminder: Accidents DO happen, folks.

VFW:
The VFW that we're meeting at is one mile south of Hwy 71 once you turn south on Hwy 95. It's on the right. It's not marked well so keep an eye on your odometer and look for the helicopter parked out front. The parking lot is paved blacktop but use caution: There are several potholes and the entrance has loose gravel. Be extra careful when pulling into the lot or when we're leaving. The lot is big so we should have plenty of room.

The Church:
The church is just about a mile from the VFW. When we leave the VFW, we'll head into town and the first street across the Colorado River bridge on the left is 5th. I'll assign one good tailgunner to run ahead of us and stop traffic at 5th so we can all get across the road together. Once we turn left, we'll go about 7 blocks. There is a major blind crossing at Main Street. **STARZ....this is where I'll most likely need you to pull traffic control with your well-lighted bike. I might also use you at the 5th street turn. Find me as soon as you get to the VFW so we can discuss it**.  We'll make a right onto Hudgins and park in that block. This will put us one block north of the church. There should be plenty of parking along the street on both sides. Another caution: The right side of the road is gravel so be careful when parking and putting your foot down.

The Cemetery:
The cemetery is 2 miles south of town on Hwy 95 on the left hand side. The funeral director has asked that we pull in at the tail of the procession. There are 3 entrances to the cemetery. The funeral director asked that we go in the first gate which is just at the top of a hill with plenty of vision on the other side to see oncoming traffic. I'm not sure if law enforcement will be blocking traffic or not. Most likely they will at the third entrance which is where the funeral procession will be turning in. We'll park and walk our way to the gravesite. Once the services are over, we can discuss amongst ourselves if we want to go back to our perspective starting points seperately or as a group.

Folks, this might turn out to be the largest Mission Texas has had to date. Remember the reason for the ride: To pay our respects to Pfc Tina Priest and to show the family that America still cares about her service members. The town of Smithville will be watching so let's show some Texas Pride!
See ya'll tomorrow morning at Denny's. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me. I'll be checking email until late in the night. And thank you to each and every one of you.

I appologize if this is too long or detailed. I just hate surprises and would rather you have too much than not enough information.

I'll be in a 5 door, toyota built box.  I was thinking about meeting the rest of you at Denny's.  Will trying being a chase vehicle be a problem?  I mean, will a car in the small Denny's/VFW lots be a pain in the ass? If so, I'll meet ya'll out there.

anyone?

It looks like we might have 4 or 5 cages (4 wheel vehicles) on this Mission so you're more than welcome to come along. We'll put all the cages at the back of the formation to bring up the rear and help keep others from crowding us from behind. Bring it on and we'll see you at Denny's.

Unfortunately, my commander (the final, ultimate authority) stepped in, and with a saddened heart, and a kind word denied my request. He said if I left today before 1600 it would have been fine, but he didn't get the paperwork soon enough (and when he did, made an effort to find me) and didn't want me riding in the dark for 4.5 hours... Not mad at him, but I am upset that I won't make it. He was clearly torn with his decision and sends his regards and prayers to the family. Mine and my wifes go out as well. God forbid another mission, but I will be more prepared next time and more determined to make it.

I would like to reiterate the due to the poor weather conditions forecasted for the Houston area (high chance for rain, hail and high wind) for tomorrow's PGR mission to Smithville, I am highly recommending those members who are leaving from the Houston staging area to travel by automobile and leave you motorcycles at home! Check the weather before you leave in the morning! I want everyone to safely make it to the services tomorrow

If anyone wants to consolidate cages due to gas prices there in Austin let me know. Mine can hold 4 comfortably. I don't know about prices farther north but down here they are getting pretty high. Just an idea. I am in Round Rock and have left my home # with Bexar if ya wanna call first.

Texas, I concur with JohnnyD and Kaoz.  Trust me, nothing is more disheartening than wiping out on the way to a mission, and then missing following missions because of the repercussions.  Being there is the important thing; take your cars and leave the bikes in the garage; or at least trailer your bikes over.

Please ride safe, smart, and careful folks!  I will keep you all in my prayers.

Thank you for your dedication to this cause.

Ditto what JohnnyD, Kaoz and BonRu have said. Folks, there's no shame in this game. If you're not comfortable riding if the weather's turning sour, take the cage. That goes for any other members who either aren't comfortable riding in a formation or distances. Please, play this the safe way. Check the weather for your area tonight and in the morning. You know how things change in Texas when it comes to weather. I'd much rather see 50 cages and no bikes than to hear of one member taking a spill.

Think smart, ride smarter.

Well, no one scheduled a meeting or said I *couldn't* go, so I left word I wouldn't be in tomorrow. Mission is a go for me.

Weather for this area (at accuweather.com) looks much improved from when I checked this afternoon.

See you in Seguin, Master Chief, along with the rest of the South Texas PGR. BexarWolf... catch you in Smithville.

Hello PGR Members,
I attempted every known trick of man to get out of my obligations tomorrow. I could not get out of a continuing education class required for my Carrier Dealer Status. I would much rather be honoring this soldier's life in the company of such decent Americans, my spirit will be with you all the way down, during and safely returning from this mission!! Ride safe folks. i will see or hear from many of you in the near future anyway!!

When I took the scoot out this weekend, I flew two 3x5's (US and Texas) flags. It was like a a one scoot parade... waves and honks everywhere I went. I switched out the Texas flag and will fly two US for the mission. The small flag mount will have the POW/MIA, Viet Nam Vet, and PGR flags. Give me enough wind and staight road and I might get this 800 lb beast off the ground!

I have rigged up a pole for a 3x5 flag on my bike also.... know it will hold for a block or 2 at 30 , and everyone that was checking for bad movment of pole etc didn't see anything..... Think I will wait to put in on until mostly there tho!

I ran most of the time at under 40 mph, but I did do 60+ for a little bit. Couldn't even tell the flags were there. I don't want to tear them up though, so I'll make the trip with them furled and secured and just open them up for the mission itself.

On another weather-related note, it's supposed to be windy tomorrow so keep those scooters straight in your lane. When I did the recon down to Smithville today, I was wishing I'd put some rocks in the saddle bags. It was gusting to 30+mph and hitting me straight out of the south. I almost changed lanes a couple of times without really wanting to.

Well wouldn't you know it. The boss not only couldn't let me off today, but asked if I would be able to work overtime for the next two days as well. And to top it all off, when I got off work at Midnight, I got caught in a Squall for the last 10 miles of the ride home last night. :-(

This just wasn't my week, Looks like I'll have to wait till the next mission to make my first ride.

Ride Safe.
