Great job on the Indiana/Illinois turnover on Thursday.  Not alot of riders...just enough.  The actual Illinois portion to the Illinois National Guard Armory was uneventful and pleasant.  CW3 Barry and his team were flawless.  I expected nothing less and they gave me more.  About midway, the Warrant lead the stone to its overnight resting place.  Job Well Done Team!

Not sure if this will work or not but, for those interested, here are the links to Snapfish for the photos I've posted of the first 2 legs of this most wondrous mission.

If they don't get you there, send me your e-mail address and I'll send the invitation to you directly.

INDIANA leg of this mission is accomplished.

Scoot, you must travel with a wireless laptop because your post seem to be at real time.

Yesterday was a long day for Indiana.  Leaving home at 4:30, two staging area stops, then off for the Ohio border right on time at 6:30 with a dozen riders and the transport truck.  Cool morning, dawn breaking on the horizon, mist on all the beautiful Indiana fields and straddle a motorcycle at 75 MPH, life gets no better.

Rolled into the truck stop at state line where our Ohio compatriots, RC Butch, groundhog and Gumby were waiting.  After hello's and hugs we Transfered the stone to Firechief's truck with a short ceremony, secured the stone and most of us had breakfast, a great time to relax and just visit. Then more pictures.

Fueled and fed, we pulled out at for Indianapolis under a three man Indian State Police motorcycle escort.  We had ZERO trouble with 4-wheelers as Sgt Kath and his escort team cleard the way for a direct shot into Indianapolis, which was great because I had to set the times before we could confirm the State Police escort and I allowed time for traffic, road work ect. but that all was certainly no problem as the ISP cleared ther way for us and we arrived in Indy early, time to set up the display.

Display area was in the Indiana Government Center court facing the State Capital.  The stone was on the tailgate of the truck undet a patriotic bunting with an American flag hung behind it.  Fireman's turn out gear (Boots and hat representing first responders) on one side  and Army boots and helmet (representing the military personnel lost) on the other.  The Army Reserve, Headquarters Co, 76th Infantry Brigade provided security and two sentries were posted, flanking the stone.
The display was dramatic and there was an aura of solemness as folks approached.  Several Indianapolis TV stations were there and the strone made the noon and evening news.

Governor Mitch Daniels arrived and shook the hand of every single Patriot Guard member there.  He visited the stone and shared a story with me.  He was working for Pres Bush I and was in the White House at the time of the attack.
He was at the Pentagon the next morning where a piece of fusalage was still protruding from the building.  Assigned to the  task force charged with rebuilding that portion of the Pentagon destroyed in the attack, he was directed to "finish the job within one year".  The Pentagon was built with Indian Limestone so he contacted his friends in Bloomington IN (the limestone quarry owners) and was told they normally close the pits in the winter but, given the situation,  agreed to keep the pits open and they mined limestone all through the winter and to provide the needed stone to rebuild the Pentagon.  When asked by the President if they could get this job done, he responded:  "Mr. President, you worry about other things, the Pentagon will be rebuilt on schedule", and it was. Gov Daniels is quick to give all the thanks to the Indiana men & women who worked tirelessly, summer and winter, to provide the stone to get the job done.

Governor Daniels is a great PGR supporter, he likes us so much he invited us to ride in the 500 Festival Parade with him and he even wore a PGR armband.  Reading the posts, other states tell us how lucky we are and thay are envious of our realtionship with our Governor.  As he attends our KIA funerals, he sees what we do.

12:45 Kickstands up as we rolled out of the Government Center under our State Police escort, people waived and veterans saluted the flags as we passed, a very moving moment.  Fuel stop en route and we roll into the exchange point just across the state line in Illinois where Joe, Sean and the Illinois contingent was waiting for us. Hello's all around, the exchange ceremony, pictures, and we're off, on our way home.  13-1/2 hours and almost 400 miles later, I'm home.  Tired but a very good tired, the kind of tired you get when you've done something good and honorable.  I've spoken with many of our riders and it looks like everyone made it home safely.

To the Indiana team:  you are the best! To all the riders and cagers, thank you for turning out.  Thanks to the Asst Ride Captain, Lobo, who took the jobs no one else wanted, Kyra (Desertrose) for handling staging, Bruce (Soft tail) for signups, Randy (Sarge) for arranging the ISP escort, Chris (Firechief1211) for the truck and for your work with me on the display, my mentors, Ron (Chief) and Richard (IndyHarley) for your guidance and sage advice, Skye and her ever faithful Skyemobile, thank you for your faithfulness,  and I cannot leave out my wife Karla, the display bunting was her idea, she found the fabric and did all the sewing with one day's notice so we were ready.  Happy anniversary Darlin' (33 years today).  It was good to see all of you again and I'll see you at the Rally.

I have to put a plug in for the Indiana State Police, they were ever present, guiding us through traffic across the entire state of Indiana so we were never delayed.  Their presence added immeasurably to the success of this mission.   As they pulled out of the Illinois transfer point, We all waved and I thought: "Every state should be so lucky". Sgt Chris Kath and his squad are owed a debt that we can never repay so I will just say Thank you!. but knowing Sgt Kath, that is enough.  As my daughter said, "those State Police guys are too cool".  God bless you guys in blue & ride safe.  Sgt Rock said that!

Wow, "Sgt Rock"  you missed your calling as a journalst LOL.. Was an extreme honor to stand and ride with you yesterday (albeit I had to pull out at the fuel stop) Great planning on your part and all that helped.  Gov Daniels is Cool and said to us on the other side of the line that he would have rather been riding with us !!! This was one of those days with mixed emotions as we were given something of history to guard, but could still show some lightness of the mission( away from the display) than we are normally used to... ISP ROCK  I know some of the guys that pull duty at the 500 and they are top notch.

Great day

It was truly an honor to be part of the Indiana escort for the stone from the Pentagon. Have to thank the ISP officers for their help in keeping this a smooth and safe escort. Sgt Rock, Firechief1211, Chief, IndyHarley, Gov. Daniels and all the other riders, thank you for making this such a special occurance. I will never forget 9-11 and I will never forget participating in this great event. It was nice to see PGR members I'd never met before, (I enjoyed talking briefly to you, Barb from IL) and to see again ones I hadn't seen for awhile. Got some great pictures I will share as soon as I figure out how. Oh yeah, the faithful Skyemobile got me home safely.

Thanks to CWO3 Barry and crew for a flawless escort.  The trip had only had 2 vehicles slip in and out ouf our group in the tight morning traffic over the Martin Luther King bridge to St Louis.  As for East St Louis, I saw one car in the opposing lane stop, and a man on the sidewalk saluted the flag as we went by.    Now, off to prepare for  our IL state gathering.

And Crazy, you forgot one....

Nice pictures, Rose - especially the one of the dashing fellow laying his hand on the stone!

I haven't heard anything from Whirlwind or anyone else who made the trip to Jeff City.  Because of work I had to break off from the group when 70 crossed 270.  Because I had my rain gear with me I was able to ward off the rain up to that point, but they may not have been so lucky for the rest of the trip.

A quick report:  The transfer at the St. Louis Arch went well this morning, albeit about a half hour late.  We were waiting for a VIP who never showed - perhaps caught up in traffic or delayed by storms.  Regardless, the handoff was made at 9:30 and the procession left the arch grounds at 10:00 with ~ 20 bikes and one cage in escort, with the stone in Whirlwind's truck and the Missouri Highway Patrol following.  Special thanks to the MHP trooper who willingly acted as PGR photographer for our group shot.

Hello from an Indiana Rider!

I want to start by saying 'Thank You For The Honor'.
As Sgt Rock Said It was A Glorious Morning in Indiana!
I was fortunate to be able to ride the entire day for Indiana and support this small piece of history 'Dedicated In Blood' to its resting place in the new memorial garden in Dodge City.

I won't rehash what all the others here have already so eloquently spoken but I need to let you know how much I was moved by this event.

We will not be able to thank our Lead and Asst. Ride Captains enough for the job they performed.  They did supperbly by anyones standards.  Thank You Sgt. Rock and Lobo.

We met with the Ohio Contingent for the transfer of the stone and were also entrusted with a sense of Honor and Patriotism to go with this sacred memory from that Terrible Day.  I Pray we were able to appropriately pass that along as well to The Fine Contingent from Illinois.

Many thanks to all the rest of the fine folks that participated with us and to the rest of the people of Indiana that were able to visit this memorial stone on its journey through Indiana.

May God Bless You All and Bring You Peace
Humbly Yours

Just arrived home.... rain changed my plans for the day. After a beautiful ride from the east border to the west border of IL I was disappointed in the weather today. My intentions were to make the trip to Jeff City then return home to IL tonight. I am happy that I was able to do the ride yesterday... today would have been a bonus.

I had a great time and enjoyed meeting new friends. The memories of this mission will ride with me for a long time.  My co-rider hasn't been on a bike in over 20 years. I invited him along today and I believe I inflicted him with the itch to ride again. He was very impressed with the PGR and what we have and will continue to do to show our respect and support.

Thanks for a great ride,

Barb

Thanks to all of the members who were able to be there today.  It was great to see familiar faces from the Illinois side of the river on another Patriot Express ride.  This one on our time, not "......... time!"  But it was another inspiring cause.  I know you all understand when I speak of the feeling we get from this part of our history.  The American "Way of Life" changed with when this block of stone was separated from the Pentagon.  It's touching that we are entrusted to deliver it to it's new home in Dodge City.  Following the tradition of others, the stone and Matt Maupin package (more feelings there) were covered by a flag that belonged to my father before he passed away.  I have a front page newspaper article from Peoria Heights, IL of my father flying this flag at his home for me while I was deployed for the first Gulf War.

The weather wasn't in our favor and it started raining before we'd been on the road for long.  We stopped at the first rest area so that I could tell the riders about the call for bad weather ahead and to tell them it might be safer to head back east.  Of course no one listened and we headed on down the road.  Makes you feel bad when you are in the support cage and everyone else is showing their commitment through the weather.  I am proud of you all and extremely glad we had no mishaps.

The weather finally cleared at Kingdom City and we finished the ride to the Missouri State Capitol Building.  After a session with Veterans Commision staff and the press, the stone was secured until being displayed on Monday.

I'll get details on the Jefferson City to Kansas City trip for next Saturday worked out over the weekend.  I am very proud to have been a small part of this.

Well, it rained like a SOB for most of the trip. We lost about half of the riders by Hermann, MO. 6 bikes, support truck and my vehicle brought up the rear. We were greeted at the Capitol by the press; paper, radio and TV. A small welcoming ceremony was given and the Rock was carried to the Veteran's Commission building for security over the weekend.

The Rock will be displayed for a week in the Rotunda before finishing it's final journey.

Here are a few photos from the road, the arrival and ceremony.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I am certain that is Sgt. Matt Maupin, the only POW of the war. He's been missing since 2004.

Absolutely correct.  The folder for Sgt Matt Maupin was added by the Indiana members.  I think that was a thoughtful and important action.  This soldier will not be forgotten and needs to be brought home.  Yes, he has been missing since April 2004.

Anybody know of a good way to put a 22.5 meg movie file out for others to see?

I took a lot of pictures of the Illinois/Missouri hand-off cast & crew and the Jeff City portion of the escort mission. Then I tried my hand at making a video movie complete with music (thanks to Brad Paisley & Dolly, hope they don't mind) chronolizing the days events as sort of my own reminder. You know, something to bore the grandkids with later... It actually turned out pretty good if I must say so myself. If I can figure out a way to put it out there on the internet, I will. But, I ain't quite that internet storage savvy.

Thanks.
