I may not be able to make the funeral mission today. My club brother's son's funeral is today with visitation beforehand starting at 3pm. I am still going to try to be there for SSG Hanson's funeral but if I can't make it I want the family to know they have my condolences and my deepest respect.

Thank You to EVERYONE involved in this Mission. It was an Honor to attend.
Close to 400 miles round trip in a day, I am exhausted!
When I got home, I told my 8 year old Son where I was all day. He asked me why I do it.
I tried to come up with a reason for why I'll leave home on my bike
when it's 47 degrees outside, go to a Funeral for someone I don't even
know, and stand for hours holding a flag. The best answer I could come
up with was " Joshua Hanson is an American Hero who gave his life
defending our Freedom. I gave a Saturday to Honor and Celebrate
his life. It's a very small sacrifice on my part." I think he
understood.

I was honored to be able to attend yesterday's mission for SSG Hanson. Thank you to the SSG Hanson's family for allowing us to honor him. Thank you also to the people of the town of Pelican Rapids who came out to provide coffee, water, cookies, and doughnuts to us; and for coming out to pay their respects to SSG Hanson.
Here are some pictures I took yesterday:

This was the first mission I rode with the PGR. I was honored to be able to attend, and assist the family and to show respect for SSGT. Hanson.
Thank you to the Ride Captains and all who assisted in organizing this event, and thank you to LE and everyone else too, especially for the coffee and donuts! Everyone who attended too, you made this a special day for the family.
It was very cool how we were received by everyone there. And for a bunch of folks, most whom had never met before, acting in synchronization like a well practiced team, very impressive.
Nice to have met y'all, hope to see you again, only under happier circumstances!

Curiousity killed the cat, but for a while, I was a suspect. If you love something, let it go. If it comes back to you, it's yours. If it doesn't, hunt it down and kill it. Silence is Golden. Duct tape is Silver. Just remember, if the world didn't suck, we'd all fall off. Unfortunately, seizing the day. |

| I currently serve with the Red Bulls in Iraq as SSG Hanson did. We were all saddened to hear the loss of another Red Bull brother. I met SSG Hanson in Camp Shelby, MS during our train ups prior to coming over here. In his honor we will continue to fight as a Red Bull does with compassion and with the determination to complete the job for freedom's sake. |

sgtsquid,
I thank you for your service to our country. You and all those who are
serving in Iraq and Afghanistan are in my prayers, each and every day.
I had the privilege of meeting many of your Red Bull brothers on
Saturday; one rode on my bike with me to the cemetery, and I was
honored to have him as a passenger.
To Josh's family, my thoughts have been with you all week. I pray that
you will find comfort in your time of loss, and that the entire
community who came together to honor your son and brother will continue
to surround and comfort you in the days ahead. I can promise you that
Josh
will not be forgotten...he is one of my heroes, and will be forever.
Thank you to all the members who attended this mission, and to those of
you who escorted Josh and his family from Hector field when he came
home. I was proud to stand with you all on Saturday. And thank you to
Don Anderson, the Ride Captain for this mission. Don, I know how much
you put into this - and you did us all proud.

I want to thank Mr. Hanson for coming around Thursday night while we were waiting for the plane, and shook as many hands as he could find to thank us for being there. You will never know how much that ment to us to shake your hand sir. It is US that should thank YOU and your family Mr. Hanson, for Josh. Thank you for letting us honor him in our own small way. Our heartfelt sympathy is with your family and friends at this time of sorrow.
Another great young american hero is laid to rest, and america mourns his passing, but is very proud to have had him defend us in the war against terror.
It was a real honor to be involved with SSG. Hansons escort and guard mission. I can't tell you how much it ment to me personally to see how many PGR came from Eden Prarie and as far away as Mankato and maybe farther. It was kinda chilly Saturday morning, and still some of you got going about 0400. That's dedication to our lost heros.
Thank you, Dave.

I am submitting the following report on behalf of Don Anderson, the Detroit Lakes MN Ride Captain:
Escort and Mission Report SSG Joshua R. Hanson September 7 & 9, 2006
The Patriot Guard was asked to escort SSG Joshua R. Hanson and family from Hector Airport in Fargo ND. through Detriot Lakes MN to the Larson funeral home in Pelican Rapids MN. The day began as a bright sunny day, temps were in the 80's, and about 135 bikes were lined at the staging area. As evening came so did the dark clouds and it looked as everyone would need rain gear. I checked the weather reports and a line of severe thunderstorms were headed directly for us. I know that several people were praying that the storm would pass through quickly for a number of us had forgotten to bring our rain gear, including me.
We received word that the flight was delayed for an hour and would not be arriving until 8:20 p.m. Our prayers were answered and the rain passed to the north and south, but what was amazing came next. The clouds opened, the sun came out and shined upon us and a double rainbow appeared in the sky. It was as if we were being told that all was OK and the hand of the all powerful was going to guide us on our mission tonight.
The escort left the airport at about 8:40 p.m. with the LEO’s from Fargo, Moorhead, ND and MN Highway Patrol, Cass, Clay and Becker County Sheriffs joined later by Ottertail County Sheriffs and the City Police of Detriot Lakes and Pelican Rapids providing security and traffic control for the mission. Believe me when I say that there is not a more dedicated and professional group of law enforcement officers.
With the escort stretching more than three miles we traveled through the dark night. My emotions were running very high as the miles passed by. People lined the roadways and small town streets with flags and flash lights to pay their respects to a local hero as the body of SSG Joshua Hanson was being returned to his family. They held the flags high, stood at attention and saluted or simply bowed their heads as the family passed.
There was a short service at the Detriot Lakes Armory before we continued on to Pelican Rapids. We were lead by five LEO vehicle as we left Detroit Lakes and joined by six more as we crossed the Ottertail County line. It was about 11:00 p.m. as we came into Pelican Rapids. The towns people were assembled as for the Fourth of July parade. Josh had grown-up and attended school in Pelican Rapids and this was a true welcome for a home grown hero.
It was a cold Saturday morning, September 9th, as many of the PGR riders left their warm homes for the ride back to Pelican Rapids for SSG Hanson’s funeral. Many riders were stiff from the cold and truly appreciated the hot coffee and donuts that were fresh made the night before by a local volunteer. Many PGR members told me how good the coffee tasted and that the donuts were unbelievably good.
We staged at the Pelican Rapids Police department starting at 10:00 a.m. and the sun began warming us all. At 11:00 a.m. one hundred and forty five bikes proceeded from the staging area, in parade formation with flags, to the High School where the funeral was to take place. A honor line was formed at the entrance and along the walk to the school. For two hours the members stood silently with flags in hand as family and friends of SSG Joshua Hanson gathered to pay their last respects. At 01:00 p.m. the members took a break and once again the coffee and donuts were greatly appreciated. Prior to the end of the funeral ceremony the honor line was back in place.
As SSG Hanson’s casket was brought out to the hearse, every one stood at attention and in different ways saluted. The military was to lead the way to the cemetery, giving us time to get there ahead of everyone and form the flag line along the entrance way. Following the family, eight school buses of people gathered at the grave site. I always get a sad and hollow feeling as the rifle team give the 21 gun salute and taps is played by a lonely trumpeter. I could see tears running down many faces. It was my honor to present the PGR plaque to the family of SSG Hanson. His father shook my hand and his mother gave me a big tearful hug and both asked me to thank the members. It gave me a feeling that I will never forget. All ended at about 4:00 p.m. and the members started going their many different ways. Some gathered at the local VFW/Legion hall to share and say good-by, everyone silently hoping not to meet again under these circumstances.
The missions went off without problems and I must say that was only because of the help of Ride Captain Jeff Anderson, State Co-Captain Monica Mead and Larry “Lars” Bahr who helped me with all the coordination. I also thank the other Ride Captains who assisted during the missions. There are others that I should thank, including all the LEO’s, the Pelican Rapids Police Department for the use of their parking lot for the staging area and restroom facilities. All that donated their time and refreshments. A big thank you to all the PGR riders who gave of their valuable time to attend this mission.
Respectfully submitted,
Don Anderson Detroit Lakes, MN Ride Captain
