Once again, riders from all over Minnesota and surrounding states showed their Respect and Tribute, as well over 150 PGR members stood watch for Cpl. Troy Linden, with just under 150 cycles escorting him home to a beautiful setting in a country cemetary, 14 miles from town. It was such a lovely, peaceful day in beautiful lake country --Thank you to the family for the privilege of standing watch and escorting your loved one. Thank you, also, to the area motels who gave us the discounts on rooms, and to the American Legion for their hospitality, allowing us to relax a bit before our long rides home.

Each mission has its own special memories to each one of us. Riding into town the night before, and seeing the huge flag at Perkins, flying at half staff, reminded my riding partner and I why we were there.  I will also remember the windy day, with the flags flying proud and straight, framing the cross on top of the steeple at the little country church overlooking Cpl. Linden's final resting place.

Please feel free to use these pictures of our mission to honor the memory of Cpl. Linden.

Once again I am humbled to have ridden and stood proudly to honor yet another Minnesota hero. What a perfect peaceful setting that small country church and cemetary was for such an honorable event. I will carry those images with me for the rest of my life. Most importantly, thank you to the Linden family for allowing us the honor to be there. I'm also proud to have ridden with such a fine group of individuals that turned out for Cpl. Linden's final mission.

I would like to thank and recognize Jeff Anderson for his hard work and great organization for the mission. Thanks also to Jim Bono, Kevin Peterson, George Winslow, Birdie, Monica, Kevin P, Diane, Lisa, Scott and a dozen others that I'm sure I'm forgetting....your planning, leadership and attention to detail is incredible. Thank you to the DL American Legion and the kitchen crew who fed 100+ hungry bikers. Your hospitality was more than generous and much appreciated. God Bless All!!

I'd like to thank Jeff Anderson, RCIC for his excellent work at organizing and running this mission. To Monica who prints up the cards passed out about the fallen hero and coordinating all the details of the mission and spends countless hours working on each mission. To all the other RC's who helped throughout the week and the day of the mission. To Jim who keeps everyone on task and keeps proving to be an excellent spokesperson for our group. To all the support staff who work tirelessly in the background especially the day of the mission passing out water, helping us park, and passing out the cards and getting everyone signed in and cleaning up after us.

But most importantly, I'd like to thank everyone who showed up to pay their respects. You people are FANTASTIC. You keep taking off work, and getting up early to ride short and far distances so that you can honor the sacrifice made by Cpl. Troy Linden, a true American hero. I am constantly amazed at how many show up and how respectful everyone is. You are a tribute to the Patriot Guard Riders. My hat is off to each and everyone of you.

I'd like to thank the local American Legion for providing the PGR members with a lunch. It's another example of how people who served their country continue to serve long afterwards. The Patriot Guard Riders take their hats off to you and all the work you went to on our behalf.

It continues to amaze me when present and past veterans come up and thank us for attending the funeral. It is us who need to be thanking you. Your sacrifice, your service is to be applauded. All we do is show up to demonstrate in a small fashion how much we appreciate that service and sacrifice, especially for the service person who made that ultimate sacrifice for our freedom by giving up his life. This is a debt that we will never be able to repay, but hopefully we can at least demonstrate in a small way how much we value that sacrifice and return in some small way the honor and respect due for that ultimate sacrifice.

And to the family, I hope our presence in some small way showed you that as citizens we share in your loss, and honor your son, Cpl. Troy Linden. Trust that those who attended the funeral will never forget your son, we carry a small part of him with us in our travels back home and beyond. His sacrifice has touched our lives and made a lasting impression we will carry with us forever. Thank you for inviting us to attend your sons funeral.

To the LEO community that continues to amaze me. You always go the extra mile for us, starting with helping with traffic control as we leave our respective staging areas through the state, providing escorts from our final staging area to the funeral location, blocking traffic so we can safely provide the escort to the cemetery and helping us in so many ways so we can accomplish our mission of honoring the fallen hero. Thank you.

George

Thank you to the Linden family for allowing us to honor you and your son. I can never repay the sacrifices your family has made nor can I imagine the pain you have suffered in losing a son in the protection of our freedoms. I can only hope to live to a standard your son has set for me. I won't let him down.

Great Job everyone, I wish I could've made it, but due to unforseen circumstances (apt. building garage door came down on the luggage rack and bent it) and the fact that the tabs on my cage expired in May, I had to pray for Cpl. Linden and all of you from home.

Ride Report Cpl. Troy Linden Mission

July 19, 2006 Detroit Lakes, MN

Detroit Lakes, Minnesota is a common destination for many in mid-July. This trip though was going to be different; I was going as a member of the Patriot Guard Riders to escort and honor Cpl. Troy C. Linden, who lost his life in Iraq serving in the US Army.

Friday evening July 14 we were asked to escort Troy and the Linden family from Hector Field in Fargo, ND, to the funeral home in Detroit Lakes, MN. With the help of Larry "Lars" Bahr, NE North Dakota Ride Captain, about 75 bikes from Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota had the privilege to bring Troy back home to Minnesota. It was a hot but beautiful evening leaving the airport about 8:00 p.m. The LEO’s, including ND Highway Patrol, Cass, Clay, & Becker County Sheriffs, did a fantastic job of leading the processional.

Along the way, City Police and MN Highway Patrol blocked traffic at intersections. As we proceeded along the respective County Sheriff cars would drop off and the next whose county we were in would then be in the lead. It was well planned out, and executed flawlessly. My emotions started running high as more and more people were standing along the road as we got to Becker County and then into Detroit Lakes. When we turned the corner near the fire hall, it looked as if people were assembled for a parade. Many were wearing the same "Troy Boy" T-shirts as I was, that I received from the Linden family. People stood with flags held high and hands over their hearts. There were color guards and Veterans at attention with a salute as we passed by. Many people had tears in their eyes, including myself. They were proud, respectful and glad to have their hero back home.

Wednesday, July 19, found me heading back to Detroit Lakes at 5:00 am. With thunderstorms looming in the distance many of us found ourselves riding through the rain to get to the staging area at 9:00 am. I was at the American Legion in Detroit Lakes at 7:00 am. I joined other PGR members for breakfast. We were thanked many times by other patrons for doing what we do for the fallen soldiers, especially Troy Linden.

The staging area for this mission was at the middle school across the street about one block from the church. We gathered, assembled our flags, signed in, renewed new acquaintances, had a quick briefing and got ready for the next few hours. A partly cloudy sky was starting to give way to a hot sunny day after the early morning thunderstorms. At 10:00 am 150 bikes moved over to the church and lined both sides of the street. With flags held high, we formed a line around the entrances to the church. It always amazes me to see the diverse group that makes up the Patriot Guard. Many within this group were on their first PGR mission. The late morning was getting hot and the line was rotated out to get a break from the sun and get some cold drinking water. People felt a duty to stay on the line so breaks were short and not very often.

At noon the Honor Guard positioned themselves between the church and the hearse. We all came to attention and were completely quiet as the casket was loaded and the family began to go to their vehicles for the trip to the cemetery. The PGR members disassembled and mounted their bikes, many flying large flags. Scott Gerr and myself had the honor to lead the processional of bikes followed by Sheriff Tim Gordon, the hearse then the family and friends. This trip took us to a beautiful setting of a country church and cemetery nestled in the trees. The bikes were parked and a line of PGR members holding flags was formed along the county road and the driveway into the church. Flags were held high with hands over our hearts or salutes as Cpl. Linden passed by in the hearse followed by his family. We then closed in to the edge of the church and cemetery as the gravesite services took place. Many more tears were wiped away after the 21-gun salute and the trumpeter played taps. At that point it seemed to really set in that this is the final good-bye to this young hero, who we have on our minds and in our hearts.

Many of us left the cemetery and went to the American Legion in Detroit Lakes. The Legion graciously served lunch for us following the mission. We were greeted with ice water, sandwiches, and a cool place to sit and review the day’s events.

There are so many to thank after a mission has been completed. I want to start with the Linden family for giving the PGR the opportunity to honor Cpl. Troy Linden. Next is CAO, SFC Robert Probach who informed me of the family’s wishes and kept me up to date as plans were made. Thank you to all the Law Enforcement Officers, especially Sheriff Tim Gordon, and Chief Kal Keena. Larry "Lars" Bahr for his help setting up the escort from the airport. The staff at the middle school for allowing us to stage and use the restrooms. Thanks again to Dawn and her staff at the Detroit Lakes American Legion. Thanks to all the PGR members who gave of their time to attend this mission for Cpl. Troy Linden.

Respectfully submitted,

Jeff Anderson
