Today was my first experience with the Patriot Guard.  I was honored to participate in the escort ride for Petty Officer Gary Rovinski.  About 20 riders gathered near Chicago for the 100 mile ride to Princeton, IL.  Another group of 20 or so riders met in Princeton to continue the ride to Monmouth, IL.

In addition to the riders meeting the escort in Princeton, family members also joined the caravan to meet their hero.

Words cannot adequately express the emotion I felt this afternoon - nor can words express the sorrow I feel for the friends and family of PO Rovinski.  Your sacrifice to our nation is deeply appreciated.

It was truly an honor to assist the Rovinski family last night in reuniting them with their fallen hero in Princeton and then escorting them all home to Monmouth, Roseville and Galesburg.  Big Joe did you make it all the way?  I know there were a few riders from the Bolingbrook leg who went as far as Galesburg but then I lost track of them.  It was a very long trek even starting from Princeton.  No mishaps that I heard of even though we had, by my estimate, at least 60 riders at one point in Monmouth.  Illinois State Troopers, with the exception of one handoff west of Galesburg, provided a steady and cautious front door.  Thanks to every Patriot Guard Rider for taking time from your lives to honor Petty Officer Gary Rovinski, husband, father, son, brother, grandson, American Patriot Hero.

Rovinski Honor Mission - Princeton Rally Point
At last night's escort I learned that several riders from this area will be heading to Galesburg for the Rovinski funeral.  Princeton makes a convenient rally point for several reasons.  I will be at the Road Ranger truck stop at the intersectionof I-80 and IL Highway 26 Wednesday morning ready to depart at 6:45 AM.  This will put us at the Walmart staging area at 8:00 AM.  85 miles point to point.  I've done this ride 7 times in the last 2 weeks so it is now memorized.  Anyone who wants to ride along is welcome to show up.

To the family and friends of Petty Officer Rovinski, you have my ever lasting respect.
Regarding travel for Honor Mission from the Quad Cities. Since my ride partner had to cancel out due to work constraints, I plan on leaving from Rock Island early Wednsday morning. Is there group of riders from the QCA headed to Galesburg Wednsday morning or toniight? I can't seem to easily pick up on that.

I can be e-mailed at james.mcfarlen@us.army.mil or jim@intenseprojects.com.

It was an honor to be a part of this.
To the family, my heat goes out to you. I was with GSM Co. 4th Maint Bn. USMC, with the Marines that shared the building that your son also drilled at on the Rock Island Arsenal. I would like to say it is on honor to know that in a way i was a part of this. I only hope the presence of everyone helped you feel the same honor as I did standing there as an Iraq vet. Reporting in, back from the mission, all Four of us made it back 200+ miles safe and sound, with out a hitch. This was thier first Mission, My second, and I was Happy not to see the UG's. Very few people in the world deserve to be dishonored like that.

It never fails to amaze me, how people from all over the Country, will travel so far, for someone they have never met, and the quality of AMERICANS that do this. I am a Proud Patriot. Jon Rader

Once again I am left from a mission, speechless and emotional. Another tremendous showing of support from the PGR members from all over the midwest. From where I was standing I was not wanting to move my flag position to take any pictures, so I would really appreciate it if any pics that anyone has could be emailed to me at mikebowman@cin.net. I have been compiling mission photo scrap books since I started with the PGR. All part of my healing process and therapy as I deal with life. If you have a minute and have some pics I would be grateful if you could send them on to me. The larger the picture size the better, you don't need to shrink them for me.

Well done PGR, the members of this group are some of the greatest people I have the honor of knowing.  This was my third mission and its not getting any easier.  Each and every mission holds its own special memories.  Thanks to Wal-Mart for all the liquids and the ice chests.  To the people of Galesburg, great job.  To the town of Roseville, way to go,  I don't think I seen a single business open, everyone shut down to line the streets to welcome home Hero Gary Rovinski.  RIP HERO ROVINSKI and THANK YOU

Words would never even begin to express the gratitude that my family and I have in our hearts for your show of support.  My husband would have been humbled by your great service to our family and to our great nation.  His patriotism can be seen in each one of you, every time you ride.  Thank-you for carrying his memory with you.  In a day when the media tries to spoon feed us anti-American cynicism, it is an over- whelming experience to witness what America is really all about.  How heartbreaking that it takes the death of a service member for us all to remember that this is the greatest country on earth, and how many have given their lives to preserve that greatness.

Ride on, be safe, God bless, and thank-you,

I was part of the escort from Princeton to Roseville, and back to Galesburg. This was my first mission, and a very emotional one. Several images I will never forget. The people along I-80 and I-74 pulling over, waving flags, saluting. As a firefighter in Henry county, I knew that most of the Emergency Service Agencies went to overpasses and rest areas, but to see all of them..............an outstanding show of support!!!!! The people lining the streets in Galesburg, Monmouth, and Roseville..........Having to hold back the swell of emotions while riding, and going off by myself at Monmouth college to let some of it come out.
It was an honor meet and ride with all of you.
Rest in peace, Gary..........My thoughts and prayers are with your family.

This mission left a large hole in my heart. Being a Navy Chief and slow close to home, the words I put down always seem confused after coming from my head. It made me reconfirm my love of my family and realize the short life we live on this earth. Gary has filled a large place in my soul since his mission and I have yet to complete the final portions of this mission. Will it ever leave my thoughts.....I think not.

Choctaw Warrior and all the others who rode the escort mission Monday night:
This was our 3rd mission here in central Illinois, but our 1st escort.  I was expecting a quiet ride in the dark, and then to go home.  Instead, my wife and I (the Kickapoo couple) were overwhelmed by what we saw that night.  The people with flags all along the Interstate and emergency vehicles with flashing lights at every overpass was impressive enough, but when we pulled into Galesburg, the hundreds of people lining the streets with candles and flags just left us speechless.  I don't know if it was due to the 100 miles at 80 mph or the sights in Galesburg and Monmouth, but my eyes were pretty teary by the time that ride was over.  We've enjoyed seeing the scenic beauty of America from two wheels for 30 years now, but this was another kind of beauty that we don't get to see very often.  It restores my faith in America and her people.
Let's hope we don't need the tragic deaths of more good Americans to bring out the best in all of us.  Ride on....

As we met at the Java-Java in Davenport, I got to meet one of our newest members on his first mission. This young Marine has returned from Iraq not long ago, and I got to swap war stories with him. What really came to the fore, was that we both have experienced the same things only in different places. Old Corps or New Corps, Marines are a different breed, and can always find each other in a crowd. Of course, when the other two riders showed up (One Navy/Army vet and one Army vet both having served in Vietnam) the good natured ribbing about service branches just had to ensue. But when it came time to head out, we were all on the same mission, as one unit.

As none of the others with me had experienced Galesburg on one of these missions, I made it a point to tell them that they just wouldn't believe what they were about to experience. What a community!! Always there to support their troops. On the way down, we picked up (or actually caught up to) an off-duty police officer from Rock Island on his way to the mission and added him to our fold.

The funeral went off without a hitch, our flags flowing in the breeze, and the slow parade home to Roseville began. Well over 100 riders followed the procession with flags waving in the breeze, sometimes through light rain, but none faltered in their goals to complete the mission.

As we were driving through Roseville, I spied a young boy on the side of the road in a Marine Dress cover at full attention saluting as best he could, and keep the cover on his little head. This young man could not have been over 4 or 5 years old and got it as right as I've ever seen. (Kinda reminded me of John-John saluting the caissons carrying his father's casket through Washington, DC.) Being Old Corps I returned that salute, and noticed in my rear-views many following suit. I believe we made his day, hopefully as much as he made mine.

Upon arriving at the cemetary, and assuming our positions, I perused those who had come to show their respects from the community. I'm sure some of the gentlemen from VFW and American Legion were touching their 80's, but never missed a beat when it came time to "Present Arms" for this fine young sailor. Just as the 21 gun salute and the first note of TAPS were sounded, realizing the abundance of respect being shown from so many in a sea of flags, I felt that little lump building in my throat and water gather in my eyes.

How proud I am that I have been afforded the opportunity to ride with such a group of people.

I just wish that those who condemn, and those clowns in the media and politicians so bent on their own self-edification, could understand and see that this is truly a great country that loves those who have volunteered to protect all that we have despite all the negative stuff they spew at us.

Chris, once again you put together a great mission. It ran really smoothly. Are you sure you were in the Navy, and not in the Marine Corps? LOL GREAT JOB!!!

My thoughts are with his family and community. He will truely be missed. To the PGR although I've just met you I am overwhelmed at our friendship and very proud to call every one of you may friend. I will say to you what I said to Scoot when I saw her I love to see you but I hate to see you.
Last week when I went to the funeral home to give "Mort" the pictures for Caleb's family he told me "I got a phone call this morning" I just looked at him and said " please not again?"
Country and I got on the bike yesterday and I already had tears in my eyes another morning, another soilder let's help put him to bed is what I told him... that's all that needed to be said.
Everyone is so supportive to eachother, the Angel Soilders, you are truely wonderful, you think of any small detail and are just great. Our community here has been blessed with an outpour of support that we never knew was there. To everyone that travled such long roads to come help us, and to everyone that came 2 blocks I am thankful.

I met the other gentlemen from davenport at java java in the AM in my cage. Here started my first PGR ride... er drive rather for me. There an old corps marine and a new corps marine traded war stories, a squid showed up, and an Army combat vet. We four traveled to Galesburg shortly after getting some coffee and shooting the sheet. That drive led me to something that i really thought was gone in this society... and that is the true loving compassion of a community. I thought this to be somthing of the past. But as we stood un-faltering I could only tell myself "THIS flag unfurl'd to every breeze" as i watched the colors i held dance in the wind. I did feel a little guilty that i was in my cage and everyone was on bikes as the rain speraticly came, mainly because i couldnt figure out how any of you could see with rain pelting your face... I'm sure its the same way i did during sand storms in the desert.

But as we drove down the highway, i couldnt help but smile to see the truckers and other cars pulling over and placing their covers over their hearts. And that little boy with the Marine Corps white garrison cover saluting the flag on the big red pick up truck in front of me almost made me crash. The drapped garrison flag off of the two fire trucks followed... which took me from humbleness from seeing the little boy to swelling with great pride.

Since i've been back from the war I've noticed that i think that i feel emotionless about pretty much everything. I know it was a way to dissconnect from the war and i dont feel bad about it. But I havent even had a spec of those emotions that i felt that day. Thank you Gary for saving one more marine before you left, I had no idea that, that marine was going to be me.

It got fairly sloppy on the ride home, but I kept glancing at the picture of Gary in my tank bag map case - the rain didn't matter at all.

God Bless the Rovinski family. Thanks RCs, LEOs, Red Cross, Angels, Walmart, Galesburg and Roseville citizens and everyone who came out to show their repects for this fine American Hero.

Respectfully,

John

This was my first mission with PGR and I am humbled and honored to be a part of this wonderful group of riders.

The frienship, comraderie, and solidarity of the PGR riders has really made a huge impression on me.

I was left fairly speechless after the services....and I wanted some time to be alone, so rather than join you all at the VFW I just headed east on 116. The emptyness of the cornfields is soothing to me, it always has been.

When the bugler started playing taps, and when those shots rang out through the cemetary...I was really overcome with gratitude, sadness, and pride. Never in my life have I felt more clearly, the immense debt that each and every American citizen owes our Veterans, living and passed.

Best Regards.

Chris.

It was an honor to stand and ride with the PGR for this fallen sailor PO 1ST Class Rovinski .
I believe the mission was carried out with the utmost respect and honor. The support of the community was overwhelming. The skies opened up and the angels shed a few tears for Gary, but in the end the sun stood high in the sky as our hero was laid to rest. I was great to see the wonderful turnout and the number of first time members that showed up. As always it was good to see the familiar faces and to make new acquaintances.

It was an honor to take the day off of work and to stand (in the rain) for Gary Rovinski who gave the ultimate sacrifice for his country.   Despite the rain, I heard no complaints among us but witnessed a solemn service supported by many.  Not only did we get a little wet at the Bethel Church, so did my eyes at the cemetery (after the skies were clear).

I was glad to see the mixture of PGR, Navy, and members of the correctional center where he worked.  This is the right way to honor him.

Good show of hands claiming Petty Officer Rovinski’s funeral as their  “first mission”. Welcome to PGR!

I mourn for Gary’s wife and kids.  I hope they can find a future without him but I will never forget.

Food was great at the Monmouth VFW. It was REAL food not this catered stuff.  Good for me because I’ve been experiencing post-mission appetite loss.  In fact, that's another form of support to the Rovinski family.  Sure needed to relax and refresh afterward.

Thank you SOLDIER'S ANGELS.   We're really not that different except in our talents.  I'm not domestic but can make coffee!

I had a nice ride home along rout e 67/125.  Saw a deer on the side of the road in broad daylight.  Pointed the deer out to the unknown rider in my mirror.
And lastly, I now know what that sputter feels like to flip to reserve 20 miles from Springfield (with 147 mi on the fill up since Galesburg).  It’s the drill I studied for!

Just a note on the lighter side:

In route to pay my respects to PO Rovinski I thought I had stepped into an Aflack commercial. It was about 4:30 and I was traveling down a two lane road through the country when I noticed three white spots on the road. Thinking they were paper or maybe those painted areas you see on the surface sometimes. At 65 you tend to get there rather quick and I found my self on top of three white geese in my lane with guard rail on both sides. All I could think at the moment was this is going to hurt or I bet there not as soft as those pillows. I guess we all were blessed that morning because I was able to split right through the middle of them but I think we all left something on the road that morning.

Even though the dew was very heavy in that part of Illinois yesterday I am proud to ride with you all.

A huge THANK YOU to all brother (and sister) Riders who brought this fallen fellow First Class home and honored his funeral with your presence.  This one hit home, as my wife and I are Navy, she is a SeaBee with NMCB17 and knew EO1 Rovinski.  We just could not make it from Colorado.

It is truly us who are honored to be invited and to stand flag watch; however, again, THANK YOU to the Riders from the bottom of my NAVY heart for this one.  It was a long, cold, wet ride for some, and I'm speechless and teary-eyed but to say,

Thank you.

First and foremost I want to thank you EO1 Gary Rovinski, for your service and sacrifice to the country that you loved. Thank you for giving me the freedoms I enjoy and the capability to ride in your honor.

Next I want to thank the family and friends of EO1 Gary Rovinski for inviting us to join them and honor our hero. My thoughts and prayers are with you and may the creator continue to comfort you during this time of sorrow and lose.

Thank you to the good people of Knox County and all the other little communities we blew by for your showing of support and honor to our hero. You have made the last two missions ones I will never forget.

As always I want to thank our ride captains, this time two fold. Once for a safe escort mission and second for a safe and well organized final ride.

Greg Bowman, my hats off to you. There were several times I didn't think my little 650 would make the Princeton to Galesburg by route of Roseville run, but I made it. I attempted to post after arriving home and fixing a warm cup of coffee that night, but as I sat and shivered while deliberating on what to say, I was defeated when I hit the submit key only to find out that I had been logged off. Words can no longer express the blinding flashing lights, the overpasses and streets lined with people holding flags and candles, or the voices of the Monmouth College Choir that still echo in my head.

While talking about the escort ride, My hats off to the Chicago area PGR members that escorted EO1 Rovinski to Princeton, and a big CAV salute to those of you who kept on riding with us to Galesburg.

Thank you to all the PGR members I rode with Monday night. An extra thank you to the couple I rode with to Kickapoo, you made the trip home a lot shorter.

As always I want to thank Walmart of Galesburg for letting us invade their parking lot and their generous donation of bottled water. While we did receive blessings from heaven, your water kept us on our feet when the sun came back out and the humidity skyrocketed.

Thank you to The Road Ranger of Princeton for letting us invade your lot beneath the I80 flags. There is just something special about those huge flags that one has to see to understand.

Thank you goes out to the Red Cross for having your support vehicle at the rally point.

A great big thank you to the Soldiers Angles, my half gallon of coffee goes so down so much better with one of the donuts you bring. Keep up the good work ladies!

Thank you to the Monmouth VFW for inviting us to attend chow after the ceremonies. It was nice to get in out of the rain and rehydrate before the short trip home.

Thank you to the State and local Law Enforcement officers who escorted us, provided us with directions, blocked off intersections, and put up with us in general (you'll have to see the photo of Rose to understand).

Thank you to all my brothers and sisters in the PGR for allowing me to stand with you and serve my country once again and honor our hero EO1 Gary Rovinski.

Just a couple of photos:
