Just saw the State Wide. Does anyone think that we should have someone waitiing at the Mortuary to let any that may show up there, know to go to the church? Jim and I are planning to meet everyone at Grand and Main off the 91.

Wow, go for a ride... and lots of questions:

1) Semperpapa -- Yes same meeting location off the 91 as we met for the Snowball Express.
2) justride -- You have email... I have gas...
3) Amyone riding with me is riding to the Church oer RC instructions. I assume the escort to the church if required is covered.

Ride Safe and bring friends!!!

SPC Meyer,

Today was a beautiful So. Cal. day and I know we all enjoyed the sunshine. Since you now see the day from a different plane than we do, I know that God was next to you making sure that it was a day that you liked. I stood at your resting spot and could see the ocean and a sea of baby blue. It was not much for me to honor your requests since you had made the ultimate sacrifice for my freedom. You are my hero and will always be remembered.

I saw something very appropriate today also. Brandon's wife and mother and father were presented with flags that had covered their husband and wife. Most people however forget that grandparents are very often a big part of a person life. Today the grandparents were honored with a flag that had covered their beloved grandson.

God bless them all and hold them while the hurt eases. Keep the pleasant throughs of Brandon.

Mission Report

What an awesome day 91 bikes and 10 cages showed up to honor Brandon A. Meyer 1987 - 2008. I want to thank everyone who participated and those whose thoughts were with us.

Three bikes and two cages staged at the mortuary while the main body staged at the church. Gunny sent ten more bikes to the mortuary to join the escort of Brandon to the church. The flag line formed as the casket was carried into the church and again as the family arrived.

PGR members from San Diego - Palm Springs - Inland Empire and others along with about 10 first timers were present. The City of Orange had four Motorcycle Officers at the church and thankfully their services were not needed. Chocolate Chip Cookies and water were plentiful and enjoyed by all.

During the service the "Missing Man Formation" was formed and "Road Guards" were volunteered and plans were amended several times!

As the service at the church ended we again formed the flag line. The trip to the cemetery was a success except that the R/C who was running sweeper for the entire procession made a wrong turn in the Texas Truck.

At the end of the service at the cemetery Brandon's father wanted to talk to the PGR. I can't quote him but among the things he mentioned were 9-11 and how it affected so many people including Brandon. Brandon would have joined the Army at age 14 if they would have let him. If Brandon would have known how his service to his country would end, he still would have gone and not changed any of it. He said that he never knew that there was a group like the PGR and could not express how he felt walking out of the church and seeing all of those people and all of those flags.

You can all be proud.

Jim Sloan and the Texas Truck

What an honor it was today to ride for SPC Meyer. It was great to see such a big turnout. Meeting Brandon's father today was a humbling experience. How a person can be so gracious and eloquent during a time of such pain was an inspiration. He is truly a man of faith and of God. I hope that we were able to touch him as much as he touched us.

There are some pictures of the day:   CLICK HERE

Hope everyone arrived home safely. Ride safe.

A message, the day after the funeral, particularly for Brandon's dad and one,
unknown, fellow Vietnam veteran.

It's handy these messages are anonymous...otherwise this might sound
mis-focused...but please read on.

I spent 4 years majoring in the discipline of public speaking; then,
in the military, taught speech briefly at the Naval Academy, wrote/arranged for admirals to give speeches, etc. One might say--seeking the answer to: "What is eloquence?"

Speech majors listen to recordings, wrap their brains around:
"I have a dream..."
"Ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country."
"With malice toward none, with charity for all...let us...bind up the nation's wounds."
"Never have so many owed so much to so few."
"If Britain shall last for a thousand years, men will still say, this was their finest hour."
(Martin Luther King, John F. Kennedy, Lincoln, Churchill).

In 61 years of Life, I observed Eloquence at its best at Brandon's funeral--from Brandon's dad and an unknown fellow Vietnam veteran.

It made me weak in the knees when Brandon's dad, a Lutheran minister, spoke to us after the service. Those who were there know whereof I speak.

If you revisit these online posts, Sir, please know how overwhelmingly impressive was your voice in that sunshine. You, I believe, have changed my life with your speaking.

There was another example of--speechless--eloquence. We were in the portion of the evolution where the hearse moves from church to cemetery; motorcycles were getting started, politely jockying for position in the entourage. As usual, there's a time lag. People who'd been in the church have trickled outside; some stand in small groups on the sidewalk, bewildered in their grief.

Two women stand nearby--one a pretty blond the age of the daughters of my fellow Vietnam-era 50/60-something's. The "soundtrack" to this scene was the incomparable rumble of 80+ motorcycles coming to life--the essence of the word "robust."

A barrel-chested man was astride his motorcycle wearing a leather jacket emblazoned "Vietnam Veteran." He snapped his kick stand back down, left it with the motor rumbling, walked through the crowd as if perhaps recognizing here was someone his daughter's age who didn't know whether to cry or not. He gave her the nicest, purest, most unselfconsciously beautiful, possibly most welcome hug I've ever seen in my life. And the beautiful girl stood in the sun and was able to cry.

He returned to his machine. The kickstand snapped up. We assembled and
"moved out."

Eloquence. Humanity. The answer to that question: "What would Jesus do?" (Or Buddha / Mohammed / all men and women of Good Will--even theological liberals like me.)

It's "0 dark 30" (3:30 a.m.) as I awoke, "having" to write "something." Hopefully this is a comfort to persons, present or future, to know how deeply MANY were Life-long touched by Brandon Meyer and our other fellow veterans, by his dad and man of the Lutheran cloth who is The Best Speaker Ever in a Lifetime.

"Fair winds and following seas" to all. I am humbled to wear Brandon's dogtag and to be able to call Brandon and all of you my shipmates.

Amazing! Yesterday I rode with the Patriot Guard, on my first mission, for PFC Brandon Meyer. It was an amazing experiance. I know some of Brandons family as they are my neighbors, and it was expressed to me that the Guards presence was very much appreciated. I am so very proud to be a part this. Thanks to all the PGR members that I met for making me feel very welcome.

This was my first ride with the PGR and will remain in my heart and mind forever. Riding with fellow veterans to honor SPC Meyer was a privilege that I will cherish. To the family of Brandon, I extend my sincere sympathy but ask that you stand tall and know that he was a patriot in the truest sense of the word. I want to thank Brandon's father for meeting with the PGR following the burial ceremony. I was deeply touched by his words and his bravery. I salute you!

Mr. Meyer,

Your son is truly one of America's finest.  We deeply appreciated the opportunity to acknowledge, in some small way, the respect we hold for your son, his family, and those who continue to serve in Brandon's stead.

At the conclusion of the service, you commented that you didn't know us... but I disagree.  You see, Mr. Meyer, Brandon was also a brother to each of us.  We will forever cherish the bond which will continue to hold Brandon, and his family and loved ones, in our hearts.

We will never forget your son... and our brother.
