First and foremost - Kenny's sacrifice has hit home for this Patriot Guard Rider.... I recently worked for a short time with his uncle in DuPont, WA.  You would not believe how Kenny was loved and respected by this man that on the outside looked like NOTHING could hurt him... the typical Nordic Viking kind of a man that could whoop just about anyone or anything.  Strong, rough, tough kind of guy.  BUT, to hear him talk about his neice's husband who was serving in Iraq was nothing short of idolization!  Darv was EXTREMELY proud of Kenny, and Kenny's wife was staying with her uncle while Kenny was deployed with a Ft. Lewis based Stryker unit.  So, he was constantly telling us stories of Kenny's adventures.

When I saw the stories on the local news channels about the two close friends from a local Stryker unit that had been killed, and the coverage of the memorial service held at Ft. Lewis, I didn't know that this was KENNY..... Darv's nephew Kenny.... and since I was working and could not ride if there was going to be a local (Tacoma, WA) mission, I let the news go by without more than my usual amount of notice.

Today, I got an e-mail from Darv, letting me know that it was HIS Kenny.  Darv knows I ride with PGR, and was always interested when I told him about the latest mission that I'd been on.  The respect we shared for our troops was a common bond.  In the e-mail he sent, he said

"The Patriot Guard of 200 strong met with the family and local and state law
enforcement from WI and MN at the airport last night (Tuesday) and to provide
escort services for our fallen hero.  They will also be attending the services
on Saturday.  I was always very interested in these "rides" that you take for
the soldiers.  Unfortunately, I have learned more than I ever wanted from a
receiving side of things.  Anyway, I won't be attending this weekends event in
WI, but wanted to extend to you my family's deepest appreciation for what you
and your organization do for our heros!"

No Darv, on behalf of thousands of PGR members, and from a grateful nation, we thank YOU and your entire family for YOUR sacrifice, and for that of Kenny, Heidi, and everyone else that is close to you!  I regret that I didn't know this was YOUR Kenny until after the local services had been held, because I would have been there come hell or high water Buddy!  God Bless and Comfort you and yours, as I know that your pain runs deep, and your sorrow is overwhelming.

Your friend,
Jerry

It is with deep regret that we will be unable to attend this mission to honor Fallen Hero, Spc. Kenneth M. Cross as we will be in Two Rivers honoring Fallen Hero, Pfc. Shaun Novak. Our continued thoughts and prayers for Kenneth, his family and his friends.

Present temp in the Duluth/Superior area is 46. Partly cloudly and not much wind. It's probably going to be a little cool. Hard to say up here. Dress accordingly.

I pray all have a safe trip to and from our mission and all the other missions that are taking place today.

Don't know why this post reads at 12:15PM. The temp was 46 at 05:00 this morning.

Even under the hard circumstances, it was nice to meet Bob, Bruce, Gordy, Jim, Rick, Greg, JD, Alena, Dave (hope it was just the plug) and Pat (Teach). I always think it will get easier the next time, but again I was wrong.

Yup, Snowman Dick, it never gets any easier. I especially can't keep a dry eye when we stand at the cemetery, Taps always gets to me....and shaking hands with those who want thank us even in their great sorrow, when we can never thank them enough for their service and sacrifice.

Great to meet you Dick, and also Dean and Nicole from Hermantown. Good to see Wayne (bagwaji) again - we've been on several missions, including the previous Superior mission last March (first one for both of us) - and to meet up again with Jeff, who remembered me from the LaCrosse mission. When I tell people why I ride with the PGR, I always say that it's the best thing I've ever done on a motorcycle.

Great job yesterday by the ride captains, and a big pat on the back is on order for all of the MN, WI and Dakota PGRs for stepping up on a very event-full day. On the way to the cemetery, I remember seeing a young woman, with a dog on one side of her and a baby stroller on the other, waving a big American flag. I also saw a bird circling over the cemetery, perhaps it was an eagle? In any case, a humbling and inspiring day, as always.

I'd like to thank everybody for their advice and sympathy with my stripped oil drain problem, especially the machinist guy (I'm sorry, I forgot your name) who suggested I try a self-tapping drain plug from an auto parts store. I tried it today, worked like a champ. Best $1.99 I ever spent!

Tomorrow is 9/11, and we have another mission. Hopefully, I'll be able to make it. If not, I know you guys will be there, in honor and respect, big time.

Thanks to everybody for a job well done especially the captains whom we couldn't do this without. To the LEOs for there protection and that great parking area at the cemetary. The family for allowing us to show our respects. And a special thanks to the military members who expressed their thanks to us, it's you guys who deserve our thanks.

I too saw that bird soaring above the ceremony at the cemetary and I'm quite sure it was an eagle. I'd like to think it was there to escort the spirit of Spc. Cross to the great beyond.

I'm sure we will all remember the chilly ride to attend this mission. Thank you to the club who provided the hot coffee and rolls!

Thank you to the family of Cpl. Cross for allowing us the honor of standing watch and honoring the memory and service of your loved one.

Thank you to Paul, the other ride captains and the rest of the Riders that attended this honor mission. The organization was top notch and seamed to go off without a hitch. I don’t think any of us will forget this mission any time soon.

And a special thank you to the family and friends of Spc Kenneth Cross for allowing us to show our respects to Kenneth.

I  was so impressed with this mission for SPC Kenneth Cross.  Paul and all the ride captains, well done you guys, you know what you are doing.  The staging area was perfect, what can I say about the coffee and sweet rolls on a cool morning, top shelf for whoever brought them, I owe you.

The motorcycle police escort from the Superior Police Department was as good as it gets.  In fact, I was taking some pictures at the staging area and was having trouble and one of the officers suggested that I take my lens cap off, might make the camera work better.  Now, that is help beyond the call of duty I think.

I have said this before, but it needs to be said again, you people from Minnesota are great to help us swell the ranks for this mission.  It was a busy weekend for us in Wisconsin and I know Minnesota had another mission today.

I got a little rain on me and my bike going up to Superior Friday and some more coming back home to the Milwaukee area on Sunday but it didn’t matter, I was able to pay my respects to an American hero, a young man (Kenny) who gave his all for us.

God bless Kenny, his wife and his family, I know you are proud of him, I am………..

George
