To clarify Sheldon motel locations.  Super 8 is on the east side of Hwy. 60 about 2 blocks north of the Hwy. 18 Junction.  Iron Horse is on the east side of Hwy. 60, south of downtown.  Sheldon Motel is on the north side of Hwy. 18, about 6 blocks west of Hwy. 60 (west edge of town).  Hope this helps.

A lot of things went through my mind during and after the escort home, but most of all is the fact that I live among some of the best and patriotic people in the country. Thank You! I have to agree that we will have to come up with windshield wipers for the insides of our glasses. Thanks to everyone, and I am proud to ride with any one of you anytime. Thanks to the LEO's. Joe from the Iowa State Patrol you're awesome, as are all the men and women of the LEO's(Joanie from Lincoln County Sherrif, I owe ya' one). Thanks to the people of Sioux Falls, Inwood, Rock Valley, Sioux Center and Orange City, you showed your true colors last night, Red, White and Blue! Well it's back to work for the funeral tomorrow, I think I'll have to work all night on those winshield wipers, gonna' need 'em tomorrow.

Darryl,

There are several of us from Papillion staging at Bucky's at 0515 with clutches out at 0530 so we can pick a rider in Sioux City at the Sioux Harbor truck stop at exit 143 on the west side of I-29.  We need to be in Le Mars by 0800 at the Calvary United Metodist Churh ( 901 3rd AVE SE) to stage for an 0830 departure with LEO escort.  We can either meet up in Lemars or you can leave with us if you like.  If things change I will post it here.  Have a safe drive.

What can I say? The posts above say it all. However, I want to thank the riders last night from Minnesota that helped out with road guards, you know who you are. Thanks. Truely a humbling experience.

Just had a thought, the media has asked me "What do you think about when you ride on these missions?" Well I told them, "Mostly about how great the sacrifice is that the soldier and family have given for us." Last night leading the escort thru Rock Valley, really made that strike home...huge lump and wet glasses. I've never seen such patriotism like I have seen in Rock Valley and Sioux Center, my beret is off to you folks.

Gotta go fix my glasses....see everyone tomorrow!

There are and will be many Patriots on the highways, on the move toward Orange City Iowa this afternoon, tonight, and especially through the early morning hours of Saturday. God Bless you one and all, and stay safe as you face road and weather hazards. When I was a young soldier I was a member of the First Army Honor Guard, and participated in memorial services for General of the Army Douglas MacArthur and former U. S. President Hoover. The opportunity to show my respect and honor to Pfc. William E. Thorne far outranks those experiences, because this young man was only in the morning of his life's day, and all his future lay yet before him. His sacrifice was so great, that it is truly as in the words of Mr. Lincoln: "...far above our poor power to add or detract." As I read the ride reports of last night's honor escort mission, and the turn-out of people along the route to show their love and respect for William, and his family, I thought that we do indeed live in the "heartland" of America.

Not the Ride report but I'll put in my 10 cents worth anyway.
Got to sleep in this morning compared to many of you. Didn't really sleep because of the anticipation. Got to the Orange City staging area at 0800hrs, some already beat me there. Thank you to Northwestern College for the staging lot, also thank you to Conoco station for letting some of us sit and or get our rain suits on in your station. The lot started filling up, some faces I recognised, some I didn't. Names I definately did not. The lot filled up, at 0850 hrs the road and state captain arrived with their contignents. Breifing, Got the 7-man missing formation set up with a young man back from Iraq,( Purple Heart receipient). Proceeded to the church with our LEO escort. Staged at the church with flags, (looks impressive), then continued with a bike count. 150 bikes not including riders and support vehicles. Excellant turn out for a rainy Saturday. During the services had some peel out to the cemetary to post a wall of flags and others peel to set up road guard at major intersections.. Funeral over lined up and headed out into more rain. 11 miles to cemetary rounded the last corner and was taken by suprise by the Hospers community contingent of citizens with their own wall of flags. Eyes started to leak again. Graveside services and the presentation of the plaque. Truly humbling experience.
Thanks to all and I mean all of the LEO's for their help, Orange City and Sioux Center Fire Dept's for their BIG Flags hanging off their Ladder trucks, All the Military personnell that showed up, Double D bar for having us after the services. Thank you to the family for allowing us to attend. Corey we love ya. If you need anything call. Pfc Thorne, THANK YOU for your ultimate sacrifice, and since your up there next to the big guy, keep an eye on my son and all the other soldiers in Iraq for me. Bring them all back safe. Thank you. Thank you for everything you've done and can do.
To all the PGR, once again you've shown your true colors. Keep it up. Road Captain Mark Miller, good job, if you ever need help again you know where I'm at.
If anyone has any pics, please send them too me, I will put them on a disc for Uncle John and he can share them with the families. e-mail is tommye@mchsi.com. Again thank you all.

500 miles and 90 soaking wet flags later......It was very heartwarming to see so many show up this morning considering the weather. Just goes to show what the PGR is really made of....truly dedicated people who really want to do the right thing. It was very moving, especially when we turned the corner and the residents were lining the highway. Great job Mark! THANK YOU NEBRASKA for the flags and thanks most of all to the family of Pfc. Thorne who allowed us to be a part of this day.

Safe at home after my 8th mission, thanks to the Thorne family for the invitation and to the people that do the work behind the scenes. Thanks to Monte for meeting up with me at 04:45 so we could meet with the Iowa riders, Congratulations to Samantha; Monte's daughter on her first mission. Thanks to Kieth Callaway, the Sgt Major and the others we rode with today I apologize I can't remember all the names. Kudo's to TSGT Price and his wife for the support vehicle use and bringing the flags, I was honored to have one from the healing field in my hand at the funeral parlor because of this effort. Also a thank you to the Copper Dragon (Young Drgon) and my friends from Iowa new and old. The LEO force, firefighters  and the people of this town really did a great job.   This was one of the best I have attended bagpipes, bugle everything that should be there was there. Rain what rain?  God needed one of our finest in heaven by his side; PFC William E. Thorne has been delivered to his final duty station. God Bless.

MISSION REORT

2200 hrs Sept 02, 2006

(copied this from Tommye)

Thrusday Escort;

Started out with what we thought would be maybe 20 riders. PGR came through and showed their colors again, over 40 riders showed up. We gained some more and lost a few along the route but all-in-all, It stayed at right around 40 for the full detail. Clouds in the sky, forecast for rain and cool temps, but between Pfc Thorne and the big guy above, We stayed dry the whole route. Well almost dry, if you were on the mission you'd understand. A biiiiggg thank you goes out to all the LEO's for providing support. Iowa Highway Patrol for the car that went with us all the way there and back, Sioux Falls for their escort out of town, 3 cars and 2 bikes (I got to get me some of those lights), local sherriff dept's for blacktop help and local LEO's for their support through their communities. You guys are the best.
Left Sioux Falls with a 7-bike Missing Man formation, Hearse, Family, with the rest of the bikes covering our back. As we got closer to Willie's hometown of Rock Valley you could see the support start to pick up. Families standing at the end of their farm driveways with flags out, (some in pajamas), Gravel roads with cars and people, then into Rock Valley. Had a hard time driving cuz my eyes started leaking, but when we rolled into town, to start off, a bunch of people with red-white-and blue sparklers, Then it was pretty much wall-to-wall people. I think the whole town was out lining the highway through town with Flags of all sizes. When the LEO slows yuh down to about 10mph with that support I guarantee your eyes will leak. Kudos to the town of Rock Valley for their pouring out of respect and honor for the family. Sioux Center had quite a few people too, and right in the middle of town hanging off the ladder truck was a big flag. Thanx Sioux Center FD. Made it all the way to Orange City without hitting any deer or without getting wet.

Friday Night Honor Guard.

Went very smooth as we rotated 11 volunteers at each end of the casket from 5-8 pm, one holding the Army Flag and the other with the US flag.

Saturday:

0820 hrs, left Le Mars with about 60 bikes, the Omaha contingent, Des Moines, and Le Mars. Le Mars PD led us out of town and the Plymouth Couty Sheriffs Dept leading us all the way to the staging area in Orange City ( a special thank you to you guys). As we left Le Mars, the heavens opened up and showered us with their tears, this did not quit until, an hour after the service at the cemetary. Arriving at the final staging area was quite impressive, as we rode in I saw another 100 bikes present. Considering the weather, I was deeply moved with the support shown. The Mission proceeded as we all hoped it would, no suprises from uninvited guests.

I copied this also from Tommye for more details as he wrote it well; "The lot filled up, at 0850 hrs the road and state captain arrived with their contignents. Eyes started to leak again. Graveside services and the presentation of the plaque. Truly humbling experience."

I've sat here writing this mission report for the last 45 minutes with leaky eyes, I have so many people to thank for your help, I am afraid to mention them all as I know I will forget someone, but you know who you are. I do have to mention Tammi Jo and Darrell for bringing flags from Des Moines and Nebraska....you guys are tops in my book. Bob-o and Tommye.....thank you from the bottom of my heart, I in no way could have done this with out you, my brothers. Preacher, Cliff, DC and Craig....do I really have to say anything? You guys came thru for me. Keith, Thanks for your help today I do so really appreciate it.

With a heavy heart I end this Misison report, good thing the heavens showered us with tears today as it hid the ones I was sheading for Corey and her family in thier time of sorrow.

God bless you PFC William Thorne. Corey, May God grant you peace beyond all understanding. Thank you for letting us show you the respect and honor that you so deserve.

To All PGR that attended:

I thank each and everyone of you for your support in this mission. As I told all of you this morning at the mission briefing, I am so proud of you all and I can't think of a finer group of people to be associated with. Each and everyone one of you came to task without question, braving the weather and temperature. Rain isn't any wetter than a family's tears. With that thought in mind, riders from Mn congregated from all parts of the state at Worthington at 0700, and made our way to Orange City, stopping in Sheldon where the group doubled in size. I'm sure many of us wondered, on such a dreary day, how many PGR's would be at our final destination, and once again, the heartland of America showed their patriotism.

Each mission, now seven for me, has its own special memories. Riding ahead with several other riders to stand guard at a crossroad on the way to the cemetary, I couldn't help but notice the small groups of people standing in the rain by the side of the road, waiting to show their respect as the procession passed. But after our duties, we made up the tail of the procession, and were totally unprepared for the sight that greeted us as we arrived at the last corner to the cemetary, and saw not only the PGR at its finest, but dozens of neighbors and friends of the Thorne family also standing in the rain, creating an avenue of flags, and the huge flag over the highway, suspended from the fire truck.

Here is a picture link to the mission. Please feel free to use any that you wish.
