Terry,

I will be escorting ya'll again from the cemetary to the reception (for those that are going to the reception). Each individual will not have to stop at the ACP (just like last time) as long as they are in the escorted group.

Everyone ride safe and next time, instead of escorting, I might be able to ride with ya'll as a member.

     See ya tomorrow!

I will be riding, pending traffic and no timing issues getting off work in the morning. IF I get off on time AND no traffic issues on the route from Willford Hall to Stacy's, I SHOULD be there just under the wire. Look for me "just in time", if I am not there, got tied up, so proceed without me. Nurse

My son, SSGT Martinez, Raymond M. is one of your charges Captain and he speaks of you in honor and respect. He as well as others from 1/12th are better NCOs because of your leadership. Thank You sir for doing what needed to be done and eventually making the ultimate sacrifice; I also thank your family for allowing you to.

You are so right, you guys n gals are Tops! It was a most humbling experiance today to see all who came to Honor this Fine individual. everyone was so nice to us and the PGR stood Tall and Proud! It is always such a sad thing to do, but the looks in those families and friends faces makes it all worth while at least for me.

For those who could not make the Second Service for Col. Daniel L. Leighton, it too was an Honor to be a part of. Nothing I can say would come out to mean what it means to me to be a part of this.

Whip, I agree with you 100%, Terry aka hawgr60 You Da Man! To the PGR members who brought all the water, Thank You. You kept many of us from melting.

God Bless You All for what you do and what you mean to the Military and its extended family.

Always do right. This will gratify some people and astonish the rest.

All,

I found the below CNN story at this address: http://transcripts.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/0606/02/ltm.01.html.

The story aired on 2 Jun 06:

COSTELLO: Good morning, Miles. Good morning to all of you.

That car bombed killed cameraman Paul Douglas and soundman James Brolan, and of course seriously and injured reporter Kimberly Dozier.

Now as she recovers at a U.S. military hospital in Germany, we're learning more about the Army captain who died in that same insurgent attack.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

JENNIFER FUNKHOUSER, HUSBAND KILLED IN IRAQ: It's not something that I ever thought would happen, but it did. It did. And it's the worst thing imaginable.

COSTELLO (voice-over): The worst thing imaginable. It's happened so many times. This time, it's the family of Army Captain James Funkhouser Jr. mourning the loss.

JAMES FUNKHOUSER SR., SON KILLED IN IRAQ: Even knowing that he died doing what he loved to do, what he wanted to do, it doesn't take away the pain.

COSTELLO: On Monday, the 35-year-old Army captain was securing a location in Baghdad just across the river from the Green Zone. With them, a CBS news crew. Then it happened. A car bomb exploded. The blast killed Funkhouser, his Iraqi interpreter and two members of the CBS news crew.

Back home in Kilene (ph), Texas, Funkhouser's wife, Jennifer, got the news, in the kind of scene played out more than 2,000 times over the past three years.

JENNIFER FUNKHOUSER: I had two army officers come to my front door, and I thought it was a Memorial Day. They were handing out pamphlets, passing out information about soldiers. I opened the door, and I took one look at the major who was there, and you could tell his eyes were red, and he was trembling. It was hard for him to even speak. I knew -- I said, I just talked to him yesterday.

COSTELLO: Funkhouser had been in Iraq since December. His wife and family called him Alex. He was the father of two young girls, and the couple had just celebrated their sixth anniversary.

JENNIFER FUNKHOUSER: He always thought about me. He would write me all the time. This is Valentine's Day. And we just had our wedding anniversary a little over a week ago and he sent me flowers. And I haven't been able to throw them away yet. A T-shirt I was going to send to him for Father's Day. Big Texas man. Little Texas humor.

COSTELLO: Funkhouser was third generation military. His father and grandfather before him, James Sr., spent 31 years in the service.

JAMES FUNKHOUSER: When you lose a child it's always painful. And when you lose your only child, it is especially painful.

JENNIFER FUNKHOUSER: I just want his name out there. You know? he was -- he was wonderful. He was a great soldier, a great guy, a great father, a great husband.

COSTELLO: But the attention given to tragedy involving the CBS news crew and her husband is somehow bittersweet. Because so many others die in relative anonymity.

JENNIFER FUNKHOUSER: All of these soldier that is are injured, my husband had a lot of soldiers that were injured with him. They all have names. They all have stories. They're people. They're not just a soldier. They have a life. They have a family, family that mourns them, a family that hurts. Everyone needs to know.

COSTELLO: Jennifer says her husband was proud of what he was doing in Iraq, and now she will carry on.

JENNIFER FUNKHOUSER: I'm a strong army wife. My husband trained me to be one. I knew that I was marrying a soldier for life. And death. This is part of it.

(END VIDEOTAPE)

COSTELLO: James Funkhouser Jr. will be married in San Antonio, Texas with full military honors. His father says Alex didn't like tears, so they plan to celebrate his son's life with stories and with songs -- Soledad.

S. O'BRIEN: Oh my goodness. Oh my goodness. His widow is so eloquent. I mean, really in voicing what every military spouse who's lost someone or mother or father, you know, says. That it's true, we report them sometimes as a soldier killed, and she says, you know, that one soldier killed is a life that's been ripped. So sad. Thank you, Carol. Nice story there.

Both of these ceremonies were beautiful. Makes me proud of our men and women in the Military. To have the family and friends of Capt. Funkhouser and Col. Leighton thank us the way they did the tears were flowing and wouldn't stop. I couldn't get the words out to say No thank you.

Terry and Brad you did a great job on the set up for Capt. Funkhouser and I think we did wonderful getting Col. Leighton honored even though it was a last minute announcement.

Thank you to everyone who brought water and sunscreen. We did need it.

It is with great pride and heartfelt emotion I say once again Thank You all so much for being Patriot Guards and taking your time to Honor and show respect for yet another great American Hero who laid down is life so we can exercise our Freedoms. It is said Freedom isn't free, we wittnessed again the cost of our Freedom. It was a great mission and I was honored to have been asked to be the lead on this mission. You Ladies and Gentelmen are what makes the Patriot Guard stand tall and look good. Thank you for the support all cagers with water and sunblock without you folks we would have dehydrated and blisterd and as I said if you fell out wouldn't kiss you.

I will post my final report after I gather myself however I need to pass along these messages to everyone.
When that young Corpral a patient from BAMC stepped out wearing his hospital PJ's and the members of the PGR began to clap for him, I was looking at his face at that moment and he began to weep and the rest of the persons attending started clapping, thats why we are here let us not forget we are here for all Service Members. There were alot of Capt. Funkhousers troops in attendance and what a great group to stand shoulder to shoulder with.

Mrs. Funkhouser wanted us to pass the message to ALL PGR Thank You so much she loves what we do, She was so greatful for what we do and said ALEX (Capt.Funkhouser) would have Loved us.
Trust me he was right there with us.

Final Report will follow Thank You All !!!

Another successful mission to lay an American soldier to rest. It was a beautiful morning that we can all only hope we have for our own final farewell. I agree with Hawkeye, I had a hard time holding it together when that young lad made his way to take his seat. I took the time to speak with him and to encourage him to get well and come ride with us, but had to cut it short because I was losing it. Good job Hawkeye and Hawgr. Special thanks to haystack, quawanna (flattop's wife) and mscrybaby for the water, it was greatly appreciated.

Special note: The mother of Sgt. Justin Farrar, who was injured with Capt. Funkhouser and was too seriously wounded to make the service, asked me to encourage all of us to go by and visit with her son at BAMC. He is on the 2nd Floor in Room 207. I'd like to put a visitation ride together ASAP. If any of you are interested, please send me an e-mail.

God’s speed Captain Funkhouser, and may HE watch over your wife and two beautiful daughters until you are reunited in HIS Kingdom.

I will never forget the young solider, Army Spc. Michael Potter,  that served under the captain who came from the burn unit. Kelly, thanks for joining in with me as we gave him a well deserved hand.

Dear Sir:
My name is Kim Buhite-Howery. I grew up next door to Alex Funkhouser. I wanted to thank you and all the PGR for attending his funeral today. Living in Wyoming, I was unable to attend. However, the sight of all of you there warmed my heart---he would be so honored.
Thank you for being there for his final journey.

May God Bless each of you!

Muddyduck,

I visited with Sgt. Farrar this morning and met with his family, thanks to your note, and my wife monitoring the PGR board last night while I was in a motel near BAMC.  I returned this afternoon with 'Bear', 'Preacher', and two other members who were at BAMC to kick off the Help On The Homefront program.  Justin is now on my list and I will see him at least weekly.  Anyone else with the time should visit him and the many others as well.  Thanks for your post, Muddyduck.  I visit ortho and burns on the 4th.floor, regularly but Justin fell through the cracks since he was on 2 because he needs to be monitored more closely.

As I sat writing my report I recieved an email from a very dear gentelman I had only spoken to once prior to Fridays PGR mission for a great Hero Capt. James A. Funkhouser.

I was struggleing with how to descibe just how great a mission this was and what an honor it was to have been a part of showing our Honor and Our respect. I opened the email and found that he had done it for me.

I'll share this with you all Brad Pierce and I Terry Smith are so greatful for all that attended and for those of you that were unable to physically be there you were in our hearts.

Thank You from the bottom of my heart to all the great NCO's and Officers of the 4th ID that presented awards for the Patriot Guard. We do appreciate the sacrifices you have made and will make and trust us when, if can speak for the entire PGR we will stand shoulder to shoulder with you and defend this great nation no matter the cost.

The following is written by "Haystack" follow the link to read all his article written.

Thank You again everyone and may God Bless the Funkhoser family and friends and  the Untied States Of America

Much has been written about Capt. Funkhouser. My article at Redstate, and the original article written by CJ, fromA Soldier’s Perspective, were only 2 of MANY; a simple Google of Capt. Funkhouser will bear this out. I became attached to this story, motivated in part by my frustration with the media accounting of Kimberly Dozier’s injuries, and the anonymity with which they reported the other casualties. While I continue to suffer angst and frustration over the way our Soldiers are treated by the media, my focus has become personal.

I “adopted” the Texas Military Family Foundation recently(though Julie might argue that she adopted me), and a few months prior to that I had joined the Patriot Guard Riders. By the grace of God, my first ride (they call them “Missions”) was to support the Funkhousers through their final trip with the man they called “Alex” to his last resting place at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetary. Riding with the Patriot Guard is the most awe inspiring, humble, solemn experience I have ever had. Attending a funeral with Full Military Honors; from the flag-draped casket on the 2-horse drawn caisson, to the 21-gun salute, to the rendition of taps by a Marine bugler, and especially the riderless horse, I can say it is an experience I will never forget. The respect the Military pays to its fallen, and the honor and dignity with which they treat the families and friends of these Heroes is deeply moving.

The Texas Military Family Foundation (Julie) and I supported the PatriotGuard by bringing pick-up trucks laden with ice chests and bottled water to refresh the riders and the support team. In all this day, 67 members were present and we were each given a 10 foot long metal pole with an American Flag attached. We walked in “formation” to the pavillion where Capt. Funkhouser’s body would be brought by caisson to be viewed by the attending family, friends, and Soldiers there to pay their last respects. As we stood shoulder to shoulder with our flags held proudly and solemnly in front of us, some of Capt. Funkhouser’s family and many of the Soldiers who were present walked down the line and personally thanked US for what we do for Soldiers’ families in such difficult times. That, among so many other things I witnessed, probably amazed me the most; that we are there to thank and honor THEM, yet they offer such grace and appreciation at such a difficult time should serve to remind the rest of America what patriotism, sacrifice, honor and duty actually means to those that fight for us every day.

An especially moving moment came when, prior to the beginning of the service, one of Capt. Funkhouser’s fellow soldiers who was injured in this explosion and had suffered severe burns, was brought to sit by Jennifer’s side and pay his last respects. He is still recovering at Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC) but insisted he be there. He was brought by hospital staff, still in his hospital attire, and sat next to her and the children; everyone applauded him as he was seated. While there were no protesters, thanks to new laws preventing them, the media was present and they took every opportunity to capture that moment on film, something I am glad they did for it will forever symbolize for me the closeness of our Soldiers, to each other and to their respective families, and the honor they bestow upon each other for their service and their sacrifice.

When the service was over, Mrs. Funkhouser had requested that only she accompany her husband to his final resting place. We stood guard until Capt. Funkhouser’s body had been placed in the hearse, and she had been escorted into the family car to take the Capt. “home”. As this was going on, their 2 little daughters were brought over near us to await the next cars that would take them to the reception afterwards, designated to take place on base at Ft. Sam Houston. They were standing about 5 feet away from me, everyone telling the girls how pretty they looked in their matching dresses; they pirhouetting about showing off their dresses and shoes. The youngest was then picked up and hugged and kissed, and she said to another family member “Daddy’s with God now”, as matter of factly as any 2 yeard old I have ever been around. My wife started to cry, my eyes welled up with these same tears, and I thought this was perhaps the most telling moment of the entire service. This little girl had lost her Father, her sister and her mother and all the relatives and soldiers had suffered this loss, but they stood proud, showed grace and dignity, held their heads up high, said goodbye to a wonderful Father and Son and Husband, and began the business of picking up the pieces and moving forward; with the grace of God.

May Capt. James A. Funkhouser rest in peace, his duty done. May his family be safe and well, and may his daughters grow to understand that their Daddy was a true American hero, having given his life for his country, for her citizens, and for the future of the Iraqi people.
