From one family of a fallen soldier to another, we feel your pain from the very depths of our souls.  Please know that these wonderful people of the Patriot Guard will take wonderful care of you in your hour of need.  They are shoulders to cry on, golden hearts to laugh with, and pillars of respect and virtue.  May you find some solace in the coming months, and know that you are welcome to reach out to us at any point at any time.

It was a great honor and a privilege to attend the escort mission and the funeral mission for this young hero.
My son joined me Monday for the funeral mission.
It was his first PGR mission.
I had told him in the past what the PGR stands for and does for our fallen heros.
He told me Monday that he wanted to go to on this mission to do his part and help out.
He was very proud to be there with the rest of us to show his support for Cpl. Todd Davis.
My son will never forget this young hero and the PGR mission that he attended to honor this fallen soldier.
I thank the family for inviting the "Patriot Guard Riders" to honor Cpl. Todd Davis.
God Bless this soldier and his family.

Its was 0530 when Hollie and I hit the road to KC. Weather cold with a chance of freezing rain for the day, but that was not going to stop us from being there for CPL Todd Davis.
The weather was cold, but the spirits of the PGR warmed the parking lot with pride and respect. Minute by minute, more and more members showed up for this mission. It was a great site to see this many members coming out on a monday and a very cold weather mission.

To the family of CPL Todd Davis, I pray for the time to ease the pain of your lose of this True American Hero.
His service to this great nation will not be forgotten. It was an Honor to stand and show the respect this young man earned.

To the many PGR members and other groups that was there for this mission, It was an Honor to stand with True Americans to pay Respect to this soldier and his family.

Eric was a super ride captain for the Davis Mission...he was everywhere at all different times. It was my first mission with him as the fearless leader...ya did real darn good E....real good...

And I think we are suppose to wait till the assigned R/C gives a report, but I've got some extra time so like Vern I'll throw in my thoughts of the day...along with a link to the pics that I took.

-------------------------

Yesterday Vern and I left the house at 5:30am got home around 7:30pm...did stop and eat on the way home, last 20 miles was in sleet and snow...not slick, but glad we ran into it so close to home.

This was "way over there"  for us and I was able to meet some PGR members from the Kansas City area....I also had some left over Wreaths Across America Pins that I gave to PGR members who worked the program in that area. There was also quite a few new PGR members there too. Like us and our memories of the "Page Mission" you'll never forget your first mission...as time passes it won't be the cold you'll recall, it will be the warmth of a task at hand that stole your heart and your conviction that you had joined the best group of folks EVER!!! and that what you did on that cold day in Janurary 2008 will bond you with a whole new family.

Some 82 PGR members and AL riders stood the flag lines in VERY COLD temps yesterday. They hammered into the frozen ground and staked out flags surrounding the funeral home. Then we set two flag lines with people. Soliders Angels had a van set up for us with coffee and we had coffee and snacks for us inside to enjoy while we warmed up. Upon arrival we were asked to show our respects inside if we wanted too. I did.

There is much to do on these missions for the ride captains. Besides setting the flags and
advising everyone what we would be doing per
requests of the family, we do  sometimes get to show
our respects inside, not just show up and silently stand with our own thoughts outside. I think that's where it all comes home to me as a PGR rider. Inside there was tons of photos of the young 22 yr old hero. From his childhood days,  to school times,  to him with friends, family and pics of his military days...but it was his high school letter jacket laying on a table that hit me hard...maybe cause I'm a mom...but, it made me think...to us he's a hero, but to his family, he's their son, their brother...who not so long ago was a carefree lanky kid in high school, then grew up real fast as an American Solider defending our freedoms.

Later, outside, I'd  made the rounds up and down the flag lines talking to new faces and old friends, taking their flag so they could get coffee, hit the bathrooms or as some do, just to take a moment to step away and regroup their thoughts. Some of the big tough ol warriors standing the flag lines have a hard time. When I see them lock tearful eyes with me and nod, I walk over, pat them on the back, nod back and say, "take a break brother"...and they walk away quietly.

PGR Missions are not a social event for us in the PGR...we have a job to do. (We can socialize at other functions.)  And as is part of our job, to shield the familys from the "uglys" sure came into play ...for ol Shirley Phelps herself showed up with her group to protest...They set up
just over the embankment of the funeral home driveway. ...at one point their chanting and yelling got too loud..members on the flag line closest to the front door of the funeral home could hear them...I saw Vern, Eric and Sheri motion to quickly but quietly move the flag line...they put a long line of people and flags shoulder to shoulder tight between them and the driveway...to shield the mourners comming in from seeing them...I found a PGR member who had several CD's of bag pipe music...I had him move his vehicle over and play the music LOUD...to drown out their ugly comments and singing....it worked too. He opened up both his doors and then stood there grinning.

We left 12 members at the door to stand in attention when the hero was brought out by the
Army's Military Burial Detail Unit. The rest of us formed two lines and walked with our flags through the winding lane of the snowy cemetary. We again formed two lines for the family to drive through.  I spent several moments talking to Sandy Deraps. It's been some time now sense she lost her son to this war, but the pain is fresh to her and I always seek her out when I see her on a flag line and wish her well and remind her we are all STILL there for her and her family.....Our Gold Star familys mean a great deal to me. ...and mother to mother my heart breaks for her.

As you look at the pics, you'll find none of the family or the casket...Young men and women that we stand for may be "OUR" heros, but they are someones child and I respect their privacy when I take PGR photos.

Cpl Todd E. Davis PGR Mission Ride Report

Cpl Todd Edward Davis was a National Junior College Athletic Association All-American and a graduate of St. Louis Community College at Meramec. Todd had gone to Meremec on a scholarship after graduating from Lee’s Summit High School in 2003. He joined the Army after graduating and gave the ultimate price when he was among six soldiers killed Jan. 9 in a blast at a booby-trapped house in Diyala, Iraq.

On a bitterly cold day in January, over 60 Patriot Guard Riders, American Legion Riders and patriotic Americans staged at Executive Beech Craft to await the arrival of a fallen American Hero. The assembled rendered honors and fell into the procession for the escort to Mount Moriah and Freeman Funeral Home in Kansas City MO.

American Cycle Escorts led the procession with one motor officer, and 3 escort vehicles. The sky was cloudy and gray and offered little promise of warmth. The cold winter day and surrounding dormant landscape echoed the brevity of this occasion. The bare limbs of the trees, devoid of leaves, seemed to stretch to the sky as if to beckon and beseech “Oh why Lord!! Why hast thou taken another of our heroic sons?” The low, gray clouds swirled angrily and swiftly across the sky as if the Angels themselves were in great torment.

The procession of patriots that escorted Cpl Davis to his final resting place pulled into Mt. Moriah between the glorious and signature Flag Line of the Patriot Guard. Many thanks to our patriotic brothers and sisters of the American Legion Riders Post 370 who erected the Flag Line in honor of Cpl. Davis. The flags stood at attention and snapped crisply in the cold wind, a glorious visual of color and sound, representing the love, honor and respect we veterans and patriots have for God, Country, and those who would give the ultimate sacrifice for our way of life.

The following day dawned much as the day before, cold and with a bitter wind. The inclement results of the autumnal equinox would not be quelled this day, but it did not matter. 81 Patriot Guard Riders erected and stood the Flag Line silently in honor and respect for Cpl Todd Davis. Our galvanizing force from the Land of Oz was observed off in the distance, but I quickly shifted our Flag Line, and they mysteriously disappeared. The family and friends were afforded the respect and privacy they were so entitled to on this solemn occasion.

Shortly before the end of the services, I shifted our Flag Line again and positioned a color guard around the hearse, while the remaining band of patriotic brothers and sisters walked in two magnificent color-filled columns from our positions outside the funeral home over the hill to the final resting place of this fine American Hero.

At the appropriate time the Patriot Guard Riders were called to attention and rendered honors as the hearse, family and military honor guard passed between our ranks. Cpl Todd E. Davis was laid to reset with full military honors, including 21-gun salute and the distant rendering of taps. The Patriot Guard Riders held ranks until the last of the family had departed and then broke ranks. One by one they stowed their flags, and then silently, like the wind they came in on, they would disappear one by one.

I’d like to thank everyone that made this PGR Mission Ride a success. I owe thanks to American Cycle Escorts, Executive Beech Craft and Mount Moriah and Freeman Funeral Home. I’d also like to especially thank American Legion Riders Post 370 and Terry and Robin of Soldiers Angels. Thanks to AJ, Doc, Rich, Mike, Hollie, Vern and Sheri..

I’m honored and humbled to serve the PGR.
