Our gradatude and sympathy goes out to the family of Cpl. Johnathan L. Benson. Johnathan gave everything for what he thought was right and he can stand down now and be at peace. Everyone in the nation knows they owe this hero everything, we should not forget him, nor should we forget the family which also gave so much. God bless them! It will be my honor to show the respect and respect to the family at the cemetary, thank you for inviting us.

Even thru the wind and rain we held true.  I read a number of the PGR patches today about never forgetting our defenders... we never will.

The Marines really know how to say farewell to a fallen comrade.  They were sharp, their uniforms were sharp.  The ceremony was crisp and sharp.  The bagpipes added a very special memory for me.  Cpl Benson is not alone... he's with all the others that have passed before him... God Bless

Once again you made me proud to be a member of the Patriot Guard....riding in 45 degree temps, wind & rain and yet all of us showing up to honor Corporal Benson. We were very honored to participate after the family invited us to honor their fallen marine. By the response of the family, I think they were all very appreciative to have us there lining the walkway with American Flags. As part of the escort from North Branch, thank you very much to the Minnesota State Patrol for taking us all the way to Fort Snelling, and to the Chisago County Sheriff's Office and North Branch PD for getting us safely to the freeway. Thank you to the Two Fire Trucks that were on the bridge overhead with their lights going and also the medics that were along the roadway paying tribute! The lunch at the legion was a nice place to warm up and talk with friends after the mission. A special thanks to NavyMom who not only has her own son serving in the military right now, but was trying so diligently to light the candle at our table during lunch in honor of our wedding anniversary. She was determined, and she finally got it, all without burning herself! What a great bunch of people you all are....pat yourselves on the back! For those of you that witnessed me, trying to get on and off of Phil's bike today, all because I decided to ride with him instead of riding my own....I apologize because it was quite the sight, and next time I'll go back to my own! Thanks again for all that you do, and for making me proud to be an American! Linda aka: Phil’s Wife

Made it home cold and wet, but with a warm feeling inside. You all made me very proud again today to be part of a great organization. What an honor to stand proudly next to you all for a very emotional farewell. Seemed like every time the tears would start to dry the next person would come along to say thank you. The words just escape me at those momemts, but I hope my quiet nod and firm handshake let the loved ones know what an honor it is to pay respects to our heros.

Rest easy Cpl. Benson. You are forever in our hearts!

Hubertus Wisconsin

18 Sep 2006 7:18 PM Alert

I made it back to Hubertus, my little north of Milwaukee town where I live, from the mission for CPL Benson, a little damp, a little tired, a little (quite a lot actually) wind blown.

I am without words to describe my seeing that cemetery with all those stones representing service people who have given all that there is to give for our great country, what a humbling site for sure.

I noticed as I am sure all of you did, that during the service for CPL Benson there were other services happening, with gun shots and taps in the distance.  If I hear taps a hundred times, I think it will still get all the way to the soul of a person.

I had many people come up to me and thank me for being there.  Of course I told them that it wasn’t about me or us, it is about them, but sometimes when I look into their faces the words that I want to say aren’t there, emotion gets in the way some times.

I would like to compliment the Minnesota Patriots as knowing what they are doing and handling everything in a very proper manner, I was proud to stand with you all and with those that came from Wisconsin including my friends (Net and Del) from New London .

God bless you CPL Benson and your families and your friends as I could see you have many……

First I'd like to thank Cpl. Benson's Family for allowing us, as PGRs and American Citizens, to show our respect and Patriotism for this fine young man.

Thank you to all that rode through the cool rain and wind to attend this Mission, from all over Minnesota, Wisconsin, and lands beyond. Thank you to all those that were unable to attend, as we felt you with us in Spirit.

Kenny, Barry, and Dan, thanx for riding on this Mission. It means a lot to me,
but more importantly, it means a lot to the Family, Friends, and fellow Troops of this American Warrior, Cpl. Benson.

May we all warm up and stay healthy.

We made a difference for another group of people who have made sacrifices for our country in the past.

As it turns out the Legion Post that we had lunch at is struggling to stay open.  The Post Commander made a point of saying thanks a number of times as our revenue helped buy them a little time.

If you get the chance....  stop by the American Legion post at 9320 Lyndale in Bloomington to spend a little money.

I thought I would pass on these comments from Gary Monn from Stacy, MN who posted this on the caring Brigde site.  I think this says it all.

TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 19, 2006 07:03 AM, CDT

Our hero was laid to rest yesterday, and it so nice to see the support from the community, as we left North Branch many of the citizens lined the streets holding flags and saluting. As we went under the Stacy bridge, the fire department was assembled on the overpass with lights flashing as the fireman stood at attention as we drove by. Many other police, highway patrol and EMT's were parked along the route with lights on, saluting as we drove by. As we arrived at Fort Snelling, the Minnesota Patriot Guard greeted us with about 100 men and women standing at attention holding full sized american flags. The Marines did a first class job honoring Johnny with a 21 gun salute, bagpipes and a bugler playing taps.

It is said in America that we are "the land of the free and the home of the brave". But I think it should be "the land of the free BECAUSE of the brave". Our country can never repay a family for the sacrifice they give, but the honor the Marine's show to the family for the sacrifice they make is awesome.

Meeting and talking with the Marines who fought next to Johnny made you proud to be an American. Next time you see a soilder in uniform, shake their hand and thank them for their service. We are the greatest country on earth BECAUSE of soildiers like Johnny who are willing to protect us and die if neccessary.

Johnny lived as a Marine and died as a Marine and we will never forget our American hero. Rest in peace hero, until we see you again with our Lord Jesus Christ.

Semper Fi (always faithful)

During the mission I made a point of speaking to the Marines there whenever I had a chance. Having been a Marine myself this mission was just a bit closer to home for me as I had personal experiences in common with them. A Seargent - Cpl Benson's squad leader it turned out - told me that there would be a luncheon at the VFW in Forest Lake and that we were welcome there. I passed the word as best I could but the annoncement was made that lunch was to be had at the American Legion in Bloomington (a worthy event, also, as it turns out). Myself, I decided to join Cpl Benson's family and fellow Marines in Forest Lake.

I had the privelege of meeting Jonathan's parents, who sat with him for all those long weeks at the hospital in Texas, many of his friends, and a couple of his fellow Marines. The Seargent squad leader, who sported a Purple Heart among many other combat ribbons, was sitting directly behind Jonathan when they were hit. I had the priveledge of personally thanking him for his service and letting all the Marines know that we were all honored to have been at the mission and that we were all very grateful that there are young people like them in this country who are willing to put on the uniforms, pick up the weapons, and face danger on our behalf.

Jonathan's friends invited me to join them watching short .mpg videos that had been e-mailed from Iraq. He was quite the character - a creative clown. He was known to be the life of the room. His squad leader also told me that he was a talented and crazy brave point man, having cheated death many times prior to getting hit.

His stepfather, Fred, told me in detail the progression of Jonathan's time in the hospital and how he eventually succumbed to peripheral issues relating to his injuries. With a brave and generous face, through his revealing words, the misty eyes could not be hidden. I was very humbled to be with these generous people. And they allowed me to come as close to meeting this brave young man as possible.

There will be some benefit events this weekend to support the organization that helped to defer some of the costs the family incurred during Jonathan's time in recovery. I believe they told me there had been some posting about it on this website. If you can, please support this cause - for families like Jonathan's who will be forever affected by these sacrifices and those who are doing what they can to help shoulder the burden.

Say Jeff - watching other Patriot Guard Riders lead and escort the funeral procession down through our flag lines was really something. I wonder how it looked from your perspective - to ride down through the flag lines. Kind of an interesting opportunity for all of us to see what we do.

That's correct, there is a benefit at the American Legion in Forest Lake on Sunday, Sept. 24 from 4 - 8 pm. Tickets are $7, available at the door.

I spoke with Johnathan's aunt late last week and she asked me to invite all Patriot Guard Riders to attend. This benefit had been in the works to cover family travel expenses before Johnathan passed away, and they decided to go ahead with it. It will benefit organizations that help provide travel expenses for families that are visiting wounded soldiers - the Marine Semper Fi Fund, and Marine Corps League.

I was proud to stand with you all yesterday in honor of Cpl. Johnathan Benson as he was laid to rest.

Please remove if this is a double post....

To all of the Patriot Riders

I'm sure it's been said many times and many ways...your presense was phenominal at my nephew's burrial at Fort Snelling yesterday.

I can't really think of anyway to show just how much it meant, but, (as a Marine Vet of Vietnam...) it probably was more emotional to me than would have been otherwise and though this was the sadist of days.... your showing of support showed that America hasn't died as much as it sometime seems.

So, I honor your quest with this poem and I sincerely thank you (on behalf of Marjorie/Steve and the whole family) for what you do.

From where you came
I do not know...
this was the first I've seen..
of what you show...

The patriotisim...
is still alive...
God bless the honor..
of which you ride

Jonathan was...
a patriot too...
I know he would have..
been proud of you.

We serve, we die...
some in the ground...
and some unfortunates...
are still around...

but all things seemed
a better day...
with you riders there
of yesterday.

The grief and loss...
too huge to mention
to all who came for
this Vet's attention

So I just wanted
for all you to know...
how I felt
as I walked the narrow road

Patriots lined up
All neat in a row..
with the American Flags
stetched out to show
That Patriotisim is still alive
to this Marine who lived and died.

The guys at work always ask why we ride in rain, cold and heat to these missions. I always tell them that they wouldn't understand, until they've done it. I showed them this poem.........now they understand. Thank you again for all what you and your family has done for this nation Johnathan. You will always be in my mind a HERO

It was an honor for me to stand with all of you on Monday. I am proud to have been there for Cpl. Benson's family.

Your loss and so much pride is felt by all of us.
The poem is beautiful and touched me deeply.

My Dad a WWII Coast Guard Veteran 1941 - 1945 wants me to tell all the PGR members how proud he is of you. And thank you!
He said that you are truely Patriots and stand for what's right and true.
He had a tear in his eye when he told me this today. He doesn't cry. Tough as nails.
Also his deepest condolences and thanks to the Benson family.

This was also posted in the Mission reports thread,

Yesterday, September 18th, we laid another American Hero to rest. Cpl. Johnathan L. Benson of North Branch, MN. It was by no means a good day for riding, cold and wet. But we had almost 100 bikes, two cages and about 120 patriots present to pay their respects and to honor this Hero and his family. Some of us started the day in North Branch to escort Johnathan and his family to Fort Snelling National Cemetery, 24 bikes arrived at the staging area for this escort. We had a short briefing and rode to the funeral home and lined our bikes up in front of the funeral home. As family and friends arrived, some of them came over to us to thank us for being there. This has always been hard for me because its me that should be thanking them, they have lost so much and yet they find it in their hearts to take the time to come to us and thank us for doing something that I consider a true Honor. Because they have invited us to be part of their loved ones final mission they give me the opportunity to stand next to my brothers & sisters and say Thank You, neither your sacrifice nor that of your family’s will go un-noticed or forgotten. We mounted our bikes at 0915, we were given the honor to lead Johnathan to his final resting place. On our way through North Branch many came out to the street to pay their respects to Johnathan and his family, on the freeway we had a local Fire Department standing watch on a bridge with a flag flying high over their truck. We passed a Mn. State Patrol and two ambulances that also stopped to pay their respects along our route.

Upon our arrival at FSNC we met up with other PGR brothers & sisters who were already standing guard, what an honor it was to ride through that flag line. After we parked our bikes we joined the others in the flag line. It was moving to watch the Marine Honor Guard take care of one of their own, every movement seemed to have a purpose. A lot of family and friends came up to thank us for being there, some of them made sure they met everyone in the flag line. The flag line was held until all the family had departed.

First I want to thank Marjorie & Steve Benson and Dawn Schubert for allowing us the honor of standing watch over their son, may God bless you and keep you during this dark time.

I would also like to thank Larry & Phil for putting together our LEO escort; the North Branch PD, Chisago County Sheriff and the Minnesota State Patrol. The MSP was kind enough to give us an escort all the way to FSNC, thanks again to all of you. Nate & Doug thank you so much for setting everything up at FSNC and having the flag line ready for our arrival. Last but certainly not least I’d like to thank everyone who took the time to come out and stand watch over this Marine, his family and his friends. You have said in one voice “Never Again”, Thank You.

Respectfully submitted,

This is being posted for Douglas Bley, RC incharge of FSNC staging,

On the morning of September 18th, 2006, 75 Patriot Guard Riders on 65
motorcycles gathered in anticipation of joining in our show of respect with
our PGR brothers and sisters escorting Cpl Benson to Fort Snelling National
Cemetery. We were honored to have a number of PGR members from WI join in
our efforts.  The group staged at 0900 CST near the Mall of America in
Bloomington, MN. After a pre-ride briefing we departed for Fort Snelling
National Cemetery, in two different groups, arriving shortly after 1000.
Upon arrival at FSNC all bikes were staged on both sides of LaBelle Drive
extending northward from Peck  Avenue, near committal shelter 2, where
services were to be conducted for Cpl. Benson.

Flag lines were then established on both sides of Peck Avenue, extending
westward from LaBelle Dr. When the PGR escort was staged Cpl. Benson's
family and friends were greeted by over 100 US flags lining the road and
framed by the leaves of the trees, a corridor of honor and respect for the
service and sacrifice he gave for our nation. Especially touching was the
bag pipe playing the Marine Fight Song.  We were honored to have an Air
Force Col. and a family member make their way through our ranks to express
their gratitude.  Through cold and rainy weather each and every one of the
PGRs stood silently and respectfully in honor of Cpl. Benson and we had
complete compliance to "no bike starts" until his family departed.

Approximately 40 PGR members made their way to a local American Legion Post
for lunch.

Douglas Bley
