Rod, my wife and I will be honored to ride for CPL. Buckley and his family. We will be coming in from the Decatur area. Since this is our first mission, we are a just a little nervous and not sure, what we need to do or provide any suggestions?

Bring as much water as you can to stay hydrated.  We like to freeze ours and let the sun melt it as it sits in the cup holder.  Stays colder a lot longer that way.  Bring sunscreen -- there usually is not a lot of shade.   It also helps to bring an energy bar or some other sort of snack bar, too, as standing watch outside the funeral home and at the graveside services can take at least a couple of hours (longer if there is any sort of procession involved, as well).  The very first mission we ever rode had a staging time of 8:30, and it was well after noon before all of the services ended.

The most important things:  honor, respect, and dignity.

RIDE REPORT
CPL. RYAN J. BUCKLEY

As the sun came up over the corn fields of Illinois many small groups of Patriot guard Riders were gathering at various places en route to Hillsboro.

We all converged at staging area about 9 am, briefing by ISP (Illinois State Police), followed by Patriot Guard briefing.

About 150 or more Patriot Guard Riders were present and about another 200-300 townspeople, friends and family.

We were not restricted behind police lines like some univited quests were, the relationship we are building with LEO's gets better all the time.

After funeral service we followed family and friends a short distance down the street to Veterans Memorial for Military service for Cpl. Buckley with full Military Honors.

The Patriot Guard showed honor and respect to this fallen hero and his family in the true spirit of the PGR.

Many thanks to all who assisted with water, flags, waivers, parking, etc etc.

Especially, Ron, Rose, Bill and other RC's who made this mission a success.

What a hot day for a funeral but an awesome turnout in Hillsboro.  I know of at least 4 individuals that had medical conditions that affected standing but endured the suffering for one who had given all for us to have the right to stand there at all.

Soldiers Angels not only brought coffee and snacks but even had bacon and eggs this time.  Just got to upstage the LEOs and their donuts I suppose.

Those that raised their hands when I asked who was honoring Ryan on a "First Mission" basis seemed like 3 to 1.  I saw some familiar faces along with a lot of new ones.  For the crowd this size, you acted with the utmost respect.  You are truly great patriot guards and I proud to be with you.  I was honored to have my son amongst those claiming this mission as his first mission as well.

To the family ~ I am truly saddened by your loss.  Ryan’s name will be on that fantastic memorial in Hillsboro along with many other heroes who will not be forgotten.

Buckley honored at burial
Medals awarded posthumously

Published Sunday, July 02, 2006

HILLSBORO - Crowds and hundreds of American flags lining Main Street on Saturday ushered a quiet solemnity to the Hillsboro Area Veterans Memorial, where full military rites were performed for Army Cpl. Ryan Buckley.

.
.
.
In addition, more than 100 motorcyclists and many others representing the Patriot Guards and Soldier Angels arrived to form a buffer between the protestors and the public.

Another truly humbling day. A great turnout from old and new PGR members. I had the opportunity to talk with Ryan's father before the service for several minutes. He was truly humbled by how many of us were there and how far some of us had traveled. We had a good talk about life without sons and how to go forward. At that moment I knew why I had made the trip.

I saw many cameras there and wondered if I could get any pics that are available emailed to me at mikebowman@cin.net The larger the file size the better but any file size will do.

It was an honor to stand with the PGR again. This was my tenth mission and it was just as emotional and humbling as the first. I saw many familiar faces and many new ones. It is an honor to be part of such an organization.

On behalf on my family and the entire community which attended the services of my nephew Cpl. Ryan Buckley - "THANK YOU" You efforts, presence and honor which was bestowed upon my nephew will never be forgotten. We will miss him but know that he sacrificed his life as many others before him have done so we all can enjoy the Security and Freedom we all take for granted on a daily basis. We will meet again in God's Kingdom and until that time keep doing what you are doing for the families of fallen HERO'S....You truly are guardian angels.....

Thank you to all the PGR members that rode in. I was part of the color guard for this service, and I have seen the PGR at many military funerals here in Illinois. It makes me proud to see patriots standing up for what they believe.

Hot and humid, but we were there not for us but for Ryan Buckley and his family. Had the great pleasure of meeting his Father and Mother at the VFW afterwards. He has truly a wonderful family who is very proud. The community of Hillsboro - you couldn't ask for a more wonderful display of honor and respect for one of their own, watch over and assist his family in any way. May God be with you Ryan and your family.
