It is foolish and wrong to mourn the men who died. Rather we should thank God that such men lived." - General George S. Patton, Jr.

I would like to thank each and every one of you that participated in yesterday's memorial for our beloved Christian Cotner. I will not speak for the family, as that is their place to do so, but I can tell you one thing: your presence displayed an honor and a commitment for our armed forces...our brother that died in service to our country, that I never would have ever thought possible.
I was in the church van from First Congregational Church with some of the closest friends of Christian, and when we saw the flagline, the whole van got quiet right away. You could have heard a pin drop. All you could hear was people saying "oh my gosh" in surprise and in awe as we slowly drove by you all, your determined faces displaying nothing but honor and respect for our dear friend.
Christian's memorial was more than was expected, and your presence made all the difference. Thank you, and though I do not wish for more servicemen to meet their end, I am thankful that if they do, there is an wonderful group like the Patriot Guard that is there to give them honor, respect, and protection during their memorial services. |

My name is SrA Joseph Salvatore. I was a childhood friend of Christian's and hung out with him and his brother (who I went to school with) a lot.
It had been quite a few years since I had last seen him, but I remember the last time I ever saw him alive was when we and a small group of friends were leaving a lazer tag arena in Waterbury, although I had arived there riding with someone else Christian offered to take me back. It was riding shotgun in his car on the way home he told me we got to talking about the military (I was already enlisted by this point) and he told me he was looking to enlist in the Army Guard. I remember telling him it's not something to take lightly but he was not fazed, his conviction to serve his country was as clear as day. It was only through a mutual friend about two years later that I had learned he in fact joined the Marines, that same mutual friend informing me a few days ago about his death.
I know my personal sadness in no way compares to the misery of the family he left in his wake, but finding this board through a Google search for his name and seeing what everyone has written truly shows what kind of an impact this young man had on his immediate community and his country. He will be dearly missed by every individual that knew him, and it is my most deep regret that I did not find out about the scheduled service in time for his funeral.
God has him now, and he will never be forgotten. Rest in peace my old friend, my memories of you will stay with me forever.

To the Patriot Guard Riders, Our heartfelt thanks to all the Patriot Guards for your awe inspiring presence at Christian's funeral service. For us to see such a loving display of support filled all of us with pride. you are all a truely impressive group. On such a sorrow filled day your actions gave us the strength to move forward. I know Christian watches over us and was there smiling at such a distinct honor.
Thank you so much, Karen Cotner and Family |
