As Bryan and I stood facing the family yesterday afternoon to give them their PGR plaque and their Gold Star banners, they asked us to thank everyone who was at the service to honor their daughter and to thank everyone for the kind messages they have read on here.

Steve and Linda - Thank you for the honor of standing for your daughter, Jessica.  As we told you yesterday, she is an American Hero and will NEVER be forgotten.  May God Bless and Keep You as you go through these hard times.

Rest in Peace, now Jessica.  You've done your time in Hell and Heaven holds a special place for our heroes.  Ascend to the arms of our Lord and seek comfort from Him.

Ride Report:

This was a day I will remember for a long time. We staged a block away from the funeral home where Cpl Ellis was resting. After the ride briefing we split into two groups, one for the walking procession and one to set up a flag line at the cathedral where the service was to be held.

One of our brothers from Idaho (Griff) was chosen to RC the group at the cathedral and I stayed with the group going to the funeral home. We set up in front of the funeral home and were soon joined by family members, friends and our Governor for the procession. The local LEO had blocked off the street so we wouldn't be interrupted by traffic.  Shortly after setting up, a horse drawn caisson came around the corner. The horses and caisson are beautiful and very fitting. It pulled up in front and we formed wide circle around it and the family. Cpl Ellis was brought out and the procession started down the street. We fell in along both sides of the procession and walked with them the six blocks to the cathedral. I wasn't carrying a flag and was able to move into positions to see the procession and it took my breath away. A horse drawn caisson followed by mourners flanked by Patriot Guard with flags flying let everyone know there was a hero coming through town.

As we approached the cathedral, I could see the flags flying above our members in the flag line. Normally, when we escort our heroes we're on motorcycles and go through the flag line in a matter of seconds. This time we were walking, and to approach those flags that slowly gives a person time to reflect on what we are doing and why we are doing it.  We can hear the sobs of loved ones because we're right beside them. It's a time when you know there is nothing more important in the world at that moment than the family and our hero.  When we turned in front of the cathedral, the flag line came to attention and presented arms. We in the procession formed a protective circle around the caisson and mourners, and presented arms. Holding as the bell tolled. I lost track of the number of rings, but our members held position until our hero was safely inside the cathedral. I want to say, this was no easy task because the wind was gusting so hard those flags wanted to take off and fly free.  I once heard that each time a breeze blows, a warrior of the past is sighing. This time they must have all been really sobbing for the Ellis's.

Once the service started we left two members at the door to stand watch and moved off to the second staging area.

Prior to the end of the service we moved back into position for the military honors. Jessica was brought to the bottom of the steps, the three round rifle volley sounded, and taps played. After our hero was safely inside her coach for the next part of her journey we quietly departed back to the staging area and riders rolled out for their long journeys home.

My Asst. State Capt. Terry Carroll and I were requested to present the plaque and gold star banners to the family at the reception, so we stayed behind. Presenting the plaque is the hardest thing I have to do. And this time was no exception. The first two tries, I couldn't get through the inscription. Then Mrs. Ellis leans forward and says "If I can get through this, you can". That was the extra nudge I needed. On the third try I was able to blabber out the lines.  I gave Mr. Ellis a PGR coin on Griffs behalf and he said it was going in his coin pocket to keep with him.

I want to thank each and every rider that made the journey to Baker City. There were so many who volunteered to help out, and you all had to travel long distances and face very harsh winds to get there. It makes me so proud to be part of such a fine group.  The Ellis's, 1st Lt. Scott, and the Baker City Police Dept. asked me to pass on their thanks for everything you did. I also want to thank Terry and Q for riding with me. You both made the trip shorter. I couldn't stay awake for the drive home and had to hand the keys over to Terry.

PGR members in attendance  - 34

Thank you to the Ellis family for allowing us to be present in this time of sorrow.
We will not forget.
