| Joe was a buddy of mine. I met him through a friend, Sgt. Owen Powell who is currently serving in Iraq right now. I had the pleasure of meeting him and attending his wedding. I want to send my condolences to his family and thank everyone who rode with him today. We'll miss you Joe. |

MISSION REPORT
SGT Joseph Ford Indiana Army National Guard May 18, 19, 20-2008 Evansville, IN SGT Ford, 23 died while serving in Iraq with the Indiana Army National Guard. A native of Knox Indiana, SGT Ford attended the University of Southern Indiana, Evansville. His wife, Karen parents reside in Evansville. At the invitation of the family, the PGR was invited to participate. However a high degree of privacy was requested as well. On Sunday May 18 at 0900 CST assembled adjacent to Tri-State Aero at Evansville Dress Regional Airport. Present were approximately 40 bikes and 60 riders. The Honorable Transfer took place in a closed hanger away from public view. Following was a transfer of SGT Ford to the Funeral Home. The PGR provided a trailing escort. Motor Patrol units from the Evansville Police Department, Vanderburgh Sheriffs Dept, and Indiana State Police did their usually excellent job in traffic control. At every intersection an EPD unit blocked traffic with an officer standing at attention as the procession passed. In preparation of SGT Ford’s arrival, the PGR had lined the front of the funeral home with flags. When the procession arrived, the PGR dismounted and formed a flag line blocking view from the road. After the Honorable Transfer took place, we took our leave. On Monday, May 19 there was a private visitation for family and friends at the funeral home. Eight members of the PGR stood a flag line from 1400-2000. During this period, as is custom the PGR presented Mrs. Ford with the memorial plaque in honor of her husband’s and her sacrifice to this nation. On Tuesday May 20 from 0900-1200, a public memorial service was held at the Evansville Army National Guard Armory. In attendance were Lt. Governor Becky Skillman, Major General Umbarger, Adjutant General for Indiana and many other dignitaries. Ten members of the PGR provided a flag line at the main entrance to the armory supplemented by additional flags lining the walk. Following the public memorial service, a private service which included the military rites and honors was conducted at the funeral home that afternoon at 1400 hrs. The PGR once again provided a flag line during the arrival of family and friends then lined up at attention during the rifle salute. Following the service, the members of the PGR were presented with a memorial coin by Major General Umbarger and were individually thanked by Lt. Governor Skillman. In addition, we have been informed that the Command Sergeant Major for Indiana Army National Guard forces now serving in Iraq will be sending us a US Flag flown over their facilities there. Although we are honored by these tributes, it is us who stand in awe of the men and women of the Indiana Army National Guard and as always, it is our honor to serve them in their time of need. Our thoughts and prayers remain with Mrs. Ford, SGT Ford’s family and friends. We will never forget their sacrifice. Respectfully Submitted: Rick Williams, Mission Ride Capt Joe Cobb, SW IN Ride Capt Pete Smith, Mission Ride Capt |
