Our sincere condolences to the family and friends of SSG.Shaun J. Whitehead,Thanks for being one of our heroes. God Bless. And God Bless, The fellow soldiers that stands for us everyday.Thank you for your dedicated service and sacrifice to defend this great nation of ours.

We salute you , My Friend

Final Inspection

The soldier stood and faced God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining.
Just as brightly as his brass.
"Step forward now,soldier.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My Church have you been true?"
The soldier squared his shoulders and said,
"No, Lord, I guess I ain't.
Because those of us who carry guns,
Can't always be a saint.
I've had to work most Sundays,
And at times my talk was tough.
And sometimes I've been violent,
Because the world is awfully rough.
But, I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep....
Though I worked a lot of overtime.
When the bills just got too steep.
And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God, forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.
I know I don't deserve a place,
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around,
Except to calm their fears.
If you've a place for me here, Lord.
It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don’t, I’ll understand.
There was a silence all around the throne,
Where the saints had often trod.
As the soldier waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.
"Step forward now,soldier
you’ve borne your burdens well.
Walk peacefully on Heaven’s streets;
you’ve done your time in Hell."

To the family and friends of SSGT. Whitehead, you are in our thoughts and prayers.  If there is anything we can do, please, let us know.

To SSGt. Whitehead, stand down now soldier...your tour of duty is over.  Jan and Joe Johnson

Weapon in my hand, ready to roll
Here we go again- our nightly patrol.
Over here it’s the same thing, night after night
Only difference it seems is whether or not there’s a fight.
Sometimes it is easy-going, calm as can be
It’s times like that which worry me.
Gotta stay alert cause you never know
If there is something ahead that’s gonna blow.
One more time we’ll make our rounds
Always praying to make it back to our “home” grounds.
But if by enemy hands we are taken out tonight
Just know it won’t be easy, it will be one hell of a fight.
Whether we’re Army, Navy, Air Force or Marine
We are the toughest boys you have ever seen.

I would like to extend my deepest condolences to the family and friends of this American Hero who stood tall for their homeland in this very sad time in your lives, but remember that you knew a hero first hand while the rest of us just get to hear about their heroic deeds. My prayers are that our GOD may bring peace and comfort to all of you during this tragic time. I want you to know that not just me , but a country full of people like me owe you a debt that can never be repaid. But please know that your loved one is now serving in the Army of our LORD in heaven, and the LORD said if I go to prepare a place for you, I will come again and recieve you unto myself that where I am there you may be also. No one can ever say that your loved one isn't a HERO, they were willing to serve that the rest of us may enjoy the freedom we do today, and the sacrifice you and your family have endured so our nation can remain the home of the free because of the brave. We are all brothers and sisters in arms and we don't forget one of our own, rest in peace my comrade, your mission is complete and now it's time for you to rest. May GOD Bless each and everyone of you.

I am one who can truly say "I know what you are going through", I lost my son in Iraq last year and I know your pain. If your son was anything like mine, he was doing what he knew was right. He was standing up for a cause and for a people that couldn't stand for themselves. You've joined an elite family now and we all share your grief, your sorrow and your memories of Shaun. Memories are like mini-visits...I can hear Blake's laugh and see his smile and remember. I know where Blake is and I know this life is only a brief delay before I get to hold my son again, but for now, he and Shaun and all the other thousands are standing guard at the Gate just waiting for us to come home. Our boys will always be remembered and thanks to the PGR, they will be honored.

Completed Mission Report. Sorry for the length. It was 10 pages.

SSgt Shaun J. Whitehead, age 24, assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, was tragically killed, while on foot patrol, by an IED in Iskandariyah, Iraq on April 24, 2008. He left behind his wife Janie, son Gabe, daughter Jana, and mother Rebecca. On April 26th the Georgia Patriot Guard was asked by Janie to stand for and honor Shaun’s service to our nation.

On Friday May 2nd SSgt Whitehead’s body was flown from Dover Delaware to Athens airport. The aircraft was scheduled to arrive at 9:15 that morning. It was a cool morning, around 62 with a little overcast and slight breeze. The family arrived early, around 8:10 AM. As the Casualty Assistance Officer, Sgt. Hale, stated, they wanted to ensure that if the aircraft came in early they would be there to welcome Shaun home. The PGR had a flag line set up at the gate to the tarmac as the family and hearse pulled through to meet the airplane. After the whitehead family left their cars they came back through the terminal to the front side where the PGR was staging the motorcycles. As they sat there bike after bike, some in groups, some solo, came pouring into the airport. The family’s emotions grew and grew as the number of people that came to show their respect for their Shaun grew. The CAO came over to me and said Janie and Rebecca could not believe what they were seeing, they had no idea of the magnitude of the flag line and escort. We had around 60 motorcycles, 6 cars, and 1 flat bed wrecker.

The escort to the funeral home took us through Nicholson, Commerce, and then back to Jefferson. The route was lined with seemed like thousands people from Shaun’s hometowns. Entire schools were lining the roads. The residents of an assisted living center were lined up in their parking lot with some holding small American flags as the procession went by. The outpouring of honor for Shaun was one of the most incredible sights I have ever seen. I don’t think there was a dry eye to be found.

That evening the Patriot Guard Riders set up a flag line in front of the funeral home for the visitation. The family received friends from 6:00 to 8:00 and we had around 35 PGR members set in a flag line at the front of the funeral home. At one point Janie brought out 7 of her friends, all of whom had a loved one currently serving in Iraq, and introduced them to us. Many of them went all the way around the flag line and talked to us. Janie and Rebecca came up to me afterward and told me that the PGR being there meant the world to them and that Shaun is smiling looking down on us. Rebecca hugged me so long and hard, crying, that my sunglasses hung on my collar, broke.

Saturday we met at the church for SSgt Whitehead’s ceremony. There were showers in the area and the forecast was for significant rain. An advance group of 6 bikes met the family at the funeral home for the escort to the church. The remainder of the PGR met at the church. There were about 55 bikes, and 5 cars. A flag line was set up for the arriving guests followed by and escort to the cemetery. The rain that was forecast broke up when it reached our location. I believe divine intervention was at hand. The ceremony at the gravesite was very emotional. Again, probably not a dry eye to be found, including the honor guard standing behind me.

After it was over the CAO, Sgt Hale, whom I had at this point became very good friends came over to me with several members of Shaun’s unit and thanked us for being there for Shaun and his family. Sgt. Hale told me that he had heard of the PGR but had no idea that we would have the impact that we did on the family and community. His last words to me were that all of Ft. Campbell would know of the PGR by the time he was through. The Georgia Patriot Guard really touched a family and a community that has given so much for our freedom. Thank you to all who made it possible!
