SGT John Mele voluntarily stepped into the gap to stand between all of us and anyone, anywhere who would wish us harm. When he raised his right hand and took his oath, he wrote a a check. Paid To The Order Of: Each and every one of us. Any amount, up to and including his very life. When he took that oath...and wrote that check...his family began their sacrifice. As a parent, I can only try to imagine what SGT Mele's parents felt at different points in his military career when they weren't exactly sure where he was. SGT Mele's daughter is six years old. How many special days has he missed in this precious child's life? How many "firsts" did he only see in videos? How in the world can we ever repay a debt like that? Quite simply, we can't. You and I...and all of America owe SGT Mele and his family far more than we can ever repay. We can only make small payments on a huge debt. Payments like taking a Saturday out of our lives and forming a quiet, respectful flag line in a small town in Georgia to show a grieving family we care. Payments like posting a sincere condolence on a website. Payments like promising a family we will be there if they need us...and meaning it.

My family and I offer our sincere and heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and fellow Marne Soldiers of SGT John Mele. We pray for comfort, strength and guidance during the trying times you are enduring.

SGT Mele was a soldier's soldier. He was good at what he did. He had truly found his place in the Army. I have read this and I have heard it from a family member. SGR Mele, thank you. I will be forever in your debt for the simple freedoms my family enjoys. Stand down, my Brother...we will take the watch. Rock of the Marne, Sergeant. Rock of the Marne.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart to all who came to Glennville today to honor SGT Mele. There were a thousand different things you could have done today, but you chose to come and stand in the wind and pouring rain to show a heartbroken family and a small town in Georgia that America cares. Each and every one of you have my deepest respect.
I want to thank SGT Mele's family for allowing us to pay our respects in our unique way. I also want to thank the staff of Brannen Kennedy Funeral Home for all of their hospitality and assistance today. And the people of Glennville...thank you. Today's portion of this mission is over. But SGT Mele's family has only begun their difficult journey. I ask that you all please continue to say an extra prayer for them.
