I'm not a bike-rider, but I am an ex-serviceman, a father of 3 sons, and a Bonnell. I don't know if we were related, but I wanted to express my sympathies and condolences to Jon's family.

I've placed a special page for Jon at http://www.kbsb.com/sgtjonbonnell/ that explains things in more detail.

11 Aug 2007 9:47 AM Alert
The community of Fort Dodge has been asked to participate in a flag ceremony beginning at 5:00PM tonight, Flags may be picked up at Tom Donney Motors. 3553 5th Avenue South, between 3:00PM and 4:30 today, the flag line will be from Decker Motors where the escort will enter Fort Dodge, to the 15th Street intersection and then North to the funeral home. The flags will also be used to line the funeral process route on Monday.

I can not get off work tonight so I can not participate this evening, although I think it's time to find a new job as a result, I may just quit and go anyway. I will however definitely be there Monday to honor a man whose death opened my eyes to many things in the past week. ps. can anyone confirm that the route home is 35/20? I would like to get the word out to towns along the route to see if we can't get a similar effort in towns along the way. Please call me at 515-236-4026.

I can never repay those who served my country, but I can damn well serve them for a change.

I would like to respond to Steven_Bonnell's message, for I believe that many of us share similar emotions. You don't need to be a motorcycle rider to belong to the Patriot Guard Riders. What is required is love and respect for our service men and women, and their families. How you arrive at a PGR Honor Mission is not as important as being there. I have seen people arrive from near and far, to stand silently for hours in a flag line in bitter cold, pouring rain, and in the hot sun...to honor fallen heroes and their grieving families. Many of us are veterans; but those who never served before, are now serving in a very special way, and it is an honor to be a part of such an organization. I never had a son; but I did have two daughters, and from them I have seven grandchildren now. I understand that the parents of a fallen hero are in a place that no one should ever have to be in. In 1967, when I was a 24 year old in South Vietnam, the men in my squad and company were like my brothers...they were my brothers...and when one of them was hurt or killed, it caused a hurt that will never go away. In later years I looked on the young soldiers as my sons, and my concern as a senior NCO was to insure that they were properly trained for whatever they might one day encounter. Steve, as a veteran, I'm sure that you understand, and have everlasting memories of people who became so close to you, that you would have put it all on the line for them. Well, in the next few days, and for all the days to come, we are all family in our love and respect for a young American who put his all on the line for his country. We all owe Sgt Jon Bonnell Jr., and his family, all the Honor and Respect that it is possible for us to muster. Steve, I'll see you and your sons on the flag line.

Can anyone from the escortfrom Des Moines tell me if my hometown did right by Jon and his family? I'd like to think you saw nothing but the stars and stripes the whole route.

I regret for health reasons I was not on this escort to his home town. from what I am told from 3 different members that were on it, this was they thought the biggest one yet. I am told the streets of town was just filled with people, with flags, pictures of our hero and a bunch of other neat things, like a lighted bill board with our hero's picture on it. Iowa does it right.
