A Soldier's Prayer
(author unknown)

Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there; I do not sleep.

I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow,
I am the sun on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.

When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.

Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there; I did not die.

A very emotional day for me.....The community outpouring for this young Hero was like nothing I have ever seen before.....My eyes were filled with tears for the whole 17 + mile ride from the school to the cemetery.....Literally hundreds & hundreds of people lining SR.7 at various places along the route.....I'm home safe, and emotionally drained....    Back home, safe and sound, from a totally awesome display of support by the PGR, ALR, CMA, Southern Cruisers and others.

The show of support for Chris and his family along the route to the cemetery was nothing short of mind boggling.  Not only did this exemplify "small town America" at its finest, it also spoke volumes as to how these local communities viewed the Rutherford family.  You should be extremely proud of Chris and the legacy he leaves behind.

To me, the one thing I shall take from this mission, aside from the showing of community support, was the attendance of SPC John Brazerton, a member of Chris's unit, who had his leg shattered by an IED.  To see this brave young American approaching us in a wheelchair, to thank US for being there today was more than this old man could handle.  Seeing him leave that chair at the gravesite to stand and salute during the gun volley and taps was something I shall not soon forget.  Little does he know it is WE who thank him and those just like him for protecting our freedoms each and every day.

My sincere "Thank You" for allowing us to stand for  Chris on this day.  I hope our presence can somehow cushion the sorrow you are feeling.
Respects,
Joe

Hard to ride with tears in your eyes.

Made it home safe. My first Mission with the Patriot Guard, and it was an amazing experience. Let's pray that we never have to do it again.

I went onto MariettaTimes.com and posted a blog thanking the Rutherford family for allowing us the privilege to honor them and Chris.  I've received several emails and calls from individuals in the area thanking us for our support.  One of the emails follows...

I attended the services for Chris. We attended school together from Newport Elem. to Frontier High School and he grew up a few streets from me in Newport. When I heard of the trouble that could have erupted I was very sad and angry. When I heard that the patriot riders would be there to "save the day" It put comfort in our hearts. I saw all of the Patriot riders but I didn't not see the ignorant people that wanted to picket his service. I am thankful for this and all of your support. I am proud to be an American and I think what you are doing is wonderful and a blessing. THANK YOU AGAIN AND KEEP DOING THE GOOD WORK! GOD BLESS YOU AND ALL YOU DO!

Thanks to everyone for their support.

Mission accomplished.

The community turnout to honor Christopher was outstanding.

We alone had 65 motorcycles and several vehicles, and the parking lot of the high school was full of vehicles from the community. The gymnasium was packed. The 16 miles of RT7 to the burial location was mostly lined with people holding their flags. Very young and old alike.

Christopher was well loved by all that knew him.

This fallen hero was laid to rest with full honors. He deserves no less, as all of our hero's do.

Thank you to everyone who was able to make this mission and those that posted your condolences. Your postings were given to the family along with the plaque.

While this mission is complete, yet another family has lost their son. I ask that you will pray for the Rutherford family. They need all the support they can receive. Thank you.

Jo made it home safe and thanks for hanging around until we all got going. You sumed up the day well. This was the first mission for several of us and you all made us feel as we had been with you forever. There are not enough words to explain the most unforgettable 17 mile ride of my life. To the Rutherford family Thank You, You raised a son and a brother who through you became our hero.

This was my first mission with the PGR. It was truly an emotional experience for me as well as my fellow ALR members who attended. The love, honor and respect shown by the community to Lt. Rutherford and his family was second to none. Truly an American Hero!! The turnout along the 17+ miles to the cemetery demonstrates the fact that the spirit of patriotism is alive and well in our area of south eastern Ohio! All our home safe. Thanks goes out to WVSC Joe for the assistance on getting a fellow member's Boss Hoss up and running after the services.
