| As a Viet Nam Vet I have two questions: Who's idea was it to fly a South Viet Nam flag, and does this action have the approval of "National?"
It appears that PGR is becoming a political entity. I have fought for freedom of speech and freedom of rights and although I would respect a South Viet Nam organization to fly their previous country's flag, I have a problem with PGR flying/representing another country.
Seems to me at 24 Spc. Nguyen had to be an "American Citizen" born in the United States to join the Military. Although I commend him serving in his/our forces as a part of a repayment for his families country, when you join the US Military your allegiance is to the United States of America -Only.
As a Veteran, I realize that Viet Nam lost some fine young men to the war. I feel that if Representatives from the former country of South Viet Nam want to honor him they should have a service of their very own. No matter what his psychological intent, Spc. Nguyen fought for the United States of America.
In 1973 the United States stopped its combat operations. South Viet Nam continued to fight until the fall of Saigon on May 1, 1975. North and South Viet Nam became a single country again on July 2, 1976.
In this case, I would be on the side of the protestors.

I think I understand the feelings of Mike Ray. He was there and no doubt has a better/different understanding of the Viet Nam situation than most of us. Not that it makes much of a difference, but a man does not have to be born in this country nor does he have to be a citizen to fight for this country. In fact, he gets no citizenship bonus points for his service. I don't know wheteher or not Dan Nguyen was born here or if he was a citizen. It doesn't matter. What I do know is that he died for this country, and that is ultimately what we honor him and his family for. I personally don't see anything political about honoring his family's request. However, I'm not surprised that some may object. Viet Nam will always be a tender subject for many. I don't know what protesters Mike is with on this subject, but I hope he didn't mean the Kansas bunch. God bless all of the PGR and let us remain united in every way. Vern "Papabear" Maddox |

I commend the PGR for honoring the families wishes to fly a flag of their native country. They are grateful for the life they are able to live now due to the sacrifices of our servicemen in their country, but they can never forget where they came from any more than we could if we lived elsewhere. I can understand how this might be difficult for the veterans who were there, but this is about honoring a US SOLDIER no matter where he or his parents came from. That being said, to the Nguyen family, you have me deepest sympathy for the loss of your HERO. You will be in my thoughts and prayers. May God grant you peace and strength.

| A Patriot is defined as “One who loves his or her country and supports its authority and interests” (Merriam-Webster, 2007). The etymology of the term Patriot is from Greek patriōtēs, from patria lineage, from patr-, patēr or “father”. Thus, being a Patriot is more a parental than political affiliation. But let’s be real here – many of us riders have vests full of patches with profound political statements. In any case, the issue of the South Vietnamese flag presents an interesting paradox. Anyone serving in Viet Nam earned a campaign ribbon that is, essentially, a replica of this flag. So, even though I agree in principle that political statements should be avoided by PGR members during mission activities, it is my opinion that this flag is an officially recognized symbol of U.S. “authority & interests” and may be proudly flown by Patriots.

| I believe the PGR is all about showing respect and honor for those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country, and those that are willing to do so. Spc Nguyen's family not only lost one of their members, they also lost their country. If it brings them some comfort seeing the South Vietnam flag flown during their son's funeral, then I am all for it. I don't see anything political in it. I only see us doing everything we can to support the family when they need it the most. I'm also with papabear37 in hoping that mnray is not refering to the protesters from Kansas. |

Mike is certainly entitled to his opinion, and I respect it. He was there, he has more then earned his right to object if he feels that flying one South Vietnam flag is wrong. Mike and Cindy have been wonderful supporters of the PGR for a long time are are valued members.
The family made a request, I agreed to it and stand by the decision. This is NOT the place to air this subject out as this is the tread for a fallen hero. I asking all to end this debate right here and return our focus to our mission. If Mike or anyone else wants to continue this then start a tread someplace else on the forum.
Thank you |

My sympathy to the family and friends of this brave young man...... |
