I live only about 6 miles from the meeting location. Although this will only be my second mission, I'll be glad to help however I can to make sure that those coming in from out of town get to the meeting place on time. To avoid potential confusion and cross-communication, I'll send my cell # to Rough Rider and let him coordinate as he sees fit.

Got some advice from a local on coming in from the east. Coming in on 255 Take the Lindbergh (Rt. 67) exit just past the Telegraph ( Rt.231) exit. This will be the end of Lindgergh Blvd. Exiting to the right. There will be a Hooter's to the right and no they aren't open that early. At the intersection light take a right on Lemay Ferry Rd ( RT. 267) to dealership. Hope this helps, travel safe.

If it fits in your schedule, IL State Captain, Mike, is planning a breakfast meet at 6:30 am at the Cracker Barrel in Caseyville, IL, and group ride from there to the Dealer. Caseyville is right off I-64 at Rt. 157 (Exit #9), and you can see the Cracker Barrel from the interstate. There are also a couple of hotels at that exit if you're coming in Friday night. There are also several hotels at the exit prior to Caseyville (Fairview Heights, Rt. 159, Exit #12). Caseyville is also where I-64 intersects with I-255. From I-64, you will need to take I-255 south (follow signs for Memphis) and cross the Mississippi River into MO on the Jefferson Barracks Bridge. As soon as you cross the river, follow these directions posted by Duane (Lindbergh, Rt. 67 is the 3rd exit after you cross the river):

Got some advice from a local on coming in from the east. Coming in on 255 Take the Lindbergh (Rt. 67) exit just past the Telegraph ( Rt.231) exit. This will be the end of Lindgergh Blvd. Exiting to the right. There will be a Hooter's to the right and no they aren't open that early. At the intersection light take a right on Lemay Ferry Rd ( RT. 267) to dealership. Hope this helps, travel safe.
P.S. Missouri law requires helmets, so make sure you bring one along if you aren't already wearing it to keep warm. High on Saturday is to be about 48-50, but that means a chilly morning ride.

I sincerely regret not knowing about this group about three weeks earlier. Sgt. Pinson went to the same high school that I graduated from in 1966, and she is buried in the same cemetary where my mom, dad, and son are. I would have truly been honored to have ridden for her. My brother, who lives but a block from the high school, told me that there were a ton of bikers at her funeral, and that it had the whole neighborhood tied up. She and her family are in my prayers, and it is in part to honor her that I have joined your group. Thank you all so much for what you do, and I am proud to join you.

That Saturday will no doubt be a day I will never forget. My wife and I traveled about 5 hours to participate in our first mission. After towing our bike in, we met up with a group of people at the Cracker Barrel in Caseyville, IL. We were one of the first groups to arrive at the staging area so we never really knew the number of bikes there. After leaving in the second group to the funeral home, I got a chance to look in the mirror and all you could see was bikes. After parking in the circle drive we made our way to the front of the funeral home. Being greeted by the family just blew me away. Right there I knew it was going to be very emotional. After standing there honoring this hero, a two star General shook all of our hands. I never served but that was awesome. When we mounted back up and rode behind the family it was then truely an honor. The ride to Jefferson Barracks was very hard. Several times the goggles had to be lifted and cleaned. Friends, neighbors, strangers, and even kids standing and waving flags to honor their hometown girl. The kids made it harder. Firefighters standing at complete attention, even when the bikes rolled by. After leaving Jefferson Barracks it was a colder ride back to the cage. On our way back home, there was a rider who had apparently seen our NE tags and showed us how much he appreciated us there. We didn't do it for the other riders, but it was appreciated. The whole way home that was all my wife and I could talk about. Thanks to everybody that helped us "out of towners".

Thanks for reposting your report Lee

I had ridden the bike from KC to Jeff City on Friday, however due to some minor equipment (gloves) issue, I was not able to bring the bike from Jeff City down to St. Louis, but hopped in the Durango with my wife (SummerBreeze) and headed to St. Louis on Saturday to meet with everyone at the staging area.  Watching the bikes roll out the parking lot was a sight…but not as awesome as seeing the entire convoy in length from the back of the formation in a cage.  We were almost the last cage flying two American flags to pull out and could see the formation all the way ahead through two or three traffic lights to the top of the first hill, a good half mile.

As we pulled into the chapel area we could see family members standing out front watching the procession.  We parked, grabbed our flags and followed others down the hill.  At the front of the bikes I seen Patriot Guard members getting hugs and thank-yous.  I think for me that is when the real reason we were there sunk in.

I have been a fairly short time member of the Patriot Guard Riders.  Attending the mission for Sgt Amanda Pinson was my first, and my wife’s second.  How do you explain that feeling deep inside your chest, or the little lump in your throat, or that cold feel of wind hitting moisture coming out the corner of your eye as you watch a fallen hero’s family greet and hug members that show up to show respect for their fallen loved one.   I don’t think I can explain it, I’m sure it affects everyone a little differently, and still a little the same.  But I can say that I have never felt I have done anything more honorable than attend that mission for Sgt Amanda Pinson, who’s sacrifice was more than I can imagine.

Standing there holding the flag, and even the drive back to Jefferson City gave me time to really reflect on myself.  Made me think of this young woman, only 21 years old, and now gone.  Made me reflect on what her life could have been like had she not fallen, what she might have been able to accomplish in life.   I think mine falls short in comparison to what she may have been able to do had she not been taken.  I don’t know if anyone else has had these reflections or not, but for me it only reinforced why I was there, and why so many were there.

How do you show how much it really means as a member of this country for those that have fallen, how do you repay their sacrifice, I can’t think of anything I can do to repay that dept of freedom….but I can do things to show respect for that person, their family, whether it be through attending, or supporting the Patriot Guard Riders, so that they can accomplish the mission when I can’t, and that is what I will continue to do.  That is what Patriot Guard Riders do, show that respect, let the family know that their loved one’s sacrifice is not only felt by the family, but that it is felt by many across this nation.

On Friday night, I used a half day of vacation to leave my job at 7PM and head to St Louis for Sgt Amanda Pinson's funeral. Joe (PDDGM) told me where he and his wife were staying and I got a room for the same hotel. THere was another rider staying there too. This would be his first mission ride and he came in from Memphis, Tennessee. Awesome!

Saturday morning Rough Rider came by to collect us and we were off to the rally point at Gateway Harley Davidson. The use of the parking lot, coffee, donuts, and support were greatly appreciated. The day was still cloudy and not as warm as we might have liked, but bike after bike rolled into the parking lot. About the time we mounted for the ride to the funeral home, the sun came out and shined on and warmed us. Lee gave a great briefing and asked about new riders and broke us down into smaller groups for the ride in.

At the funeral home, we parked on a hill behind the building. As we all walked down the hill, Amanda's family was waiting to meet everyone of us. My own eyes got a bit blurry looking into their eyes and faces and knowing that they appreciated us for being there for them in this time of sorrow. We then headed to the front and driveway with a sea of red, white, and blue.

When the motorcade to the cemetary formed up, the family requested lead and trail bikes to escort the hearse and for the PGR to fall in immediately behind the last family car. The route cut a path through town to go past Amanda's home. I was truly amazed by the number of people lining the streets with flags and banners, and patriotic music (I know I heard one vehicle playing Lee Greenwood's "God Bless the USA'). This community really stood up for their lost hero and her family. As we rounded the last corner for the entry road to Jefferson Barracks, firemen were at attention in front of polished trucks. At the top of the hill were two ladder trucks with a truly inspiring flag flying between the raised ladders. As the procession stopped for Amanda's service, more community members lined the fence, showing their love and support for this young lady.

I hope that our rides are few and far between and I pray that we never lose another brother or sister. I also want to tell all of our growing number of members; if you can attend a mission ride, please do so. From the cameraderie of being with your fellow bikers, the sorrow and grief of the family, the feeling of loss you share, to the warmth you feel inside... Being there when needed is something you'll be proud of and thankful that you did. Remember always: THIS IS WHAT WE DO.

This is a repost due to the web site crash this week.

On Friday evening they started rolling in. Patriot Guard Riders were riding from hundreds of miles to Honor Sgt Amanda Pinson's memory. They were coming to pay their respects to the family and to escort her to her final resting place. They came from as far away as New York. They came from Illinois and Kentucky. They rode from Tennessee and Nebraska, Iowa and all parts of Missouri. How small is our trouble to brave temperatures in the 30's when compared to that which Amanda has given us. Our tribute to her seems nothing when measured against her life. But still it is our duty to show how much we care and to make sure the her family and community know that they are in our thoughts and prayers.
In the clear cool dawn of a Saturday morning the riders started arriving at Gateway to the West Harley Davidson who allowed us to use their parking lot as a staging area. I would be remiss if I did not thank Gateway for their kind hospitality. The hot coffee and donuts were appreciated. And the bikes, trucks and vans kept coming. As the parking lot filled up I could not resist feeling the pride that comes from knowing that you are doing something right, something that matters. After a short informational meeting, we mounted up and set off on the 2 mile ride to the funeral home. Mike Kling, the Illinois state captain and several of his VNVMC brothers provided a road guard for us to get on the street. With over 100 bikes, it would have been impossible without their help.
We rode into the funeral home parking lot, already crowded with family and friends. Space had been reserved for us on a circular drive through the adjacent cemetery. As I parked at the entrance that led back to the parking lot our bikes were still coming. I headed toward the funeral home to speak with the family before the service started. When I had made my way to the front entrance bikes were still turning off the street. Today, we mustered 117 bikes to escort Amanda to Jefferson Barracks. I spoke with and shook hands with all of the military members present and in every case had to tell them that they were the ones that we honor not the other way around. The funeral director met me and we tried to find Tony Pinson, Amanda's father, but he was already out on the drive welcoming us and shaking hands with every PGR member he could. How can I explain the warmth and genuine gratitude that I felt when he shook my hand and did not want to let go. How can I explain the helpless feeling that I had knowing that all I could do for him and his family was to be there and care. We stood there, he and I, unable to speak and not sure what to say, but his eyes told me of his appreciation. I can only hope that mine conveyed how much I cared for him and his family on this day.
As he departed I walked down the drive toward the front of the funeral home where I met Amanda's mother. I have been told that she had not left Amanda's body from the night before, but she was there to tell us how much she appreciated our efforts. I took her hand and hugged her. How do you console a mother who has lost a child? How do you tell her that we don't deserve the honor that she gave us, but rather it is our duty as Americans to honor the sacrifice that she and her daughter have given to this country. For a second time in 30 steps my eyes filled with tears. She departed, I think, only because the service was about to start.
As I walked around to the front of the funeral home, I saw hundreds of flags. Red, white, and blue waving briskly in the morning sun. The PGR was again, for a short time, shielding these family members from the outside world that they might bid their final farewells to a brave soldier and daughter. As we stood in silent respect, two hawks appeared, soaring gracefully overhead. As we were preparing to escort Amanda's body so they too appeared to be there to escort her warrior soul. Two bikes rode point for the hearse followed by two behind. After the family the remainder of the bikes fell in. One hundred and seventeen in all were there to proclaim to all of south St. Louis that Amanda Pinson was deserving of honor and respect.
Many times that number lined the streets as our motorcade wound slowly toward one last visit to Amanda's home. We rode down her street and when she arrived, the procession stopped for a brief moment that she might say good by. As we made our way through her neighborhood people stood in silence with heads bowed. The streets were lined with people paying their respects and waving American flags of all sizes. Police and firemen snapped to attention and saluted as our bikes with flags flying came past. I could see tears in their eyes and I knew that America does care. We rounded the corner to Jefferson Barracks and a Fire Company had rigged a large flag between two of their ladder trucks. How awesome it was for them to be there, and as we climbed the hill to the entrance, another larger flag, garrison sized, was rigged between two more ladders. Fully 20 minutes passed before all of the members of the procession got to the graveside, where as I have heard too many times before, full military honors were rendered to this fallen hero.
Thank you to all who came. Thank you to all who helped where it was needed. I trust that all who came have made it home safely as only then will this day's mission to honor Sgt Amanda Pinson be complete. I will be in touch with both of her parents when I can present each with our PGR plaque and a flag which was flown in the procession. I truly hope that they will fly those flags in her honor. Amanda, we salute you. May you rest in peace and know that you will never be forgotten.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I presented plaques to Christina Ehlen, Amanda's mom, and Tony Pinson, Amanda's dad this evening.  Along with the PGR plaques, I presented each with a 3'X5' flag which was flown during the procession.  I urged each to fly them and be proud of their daughter for the sacrifice she made for our country.  This young soldier made a difference.  She will be honored in an upcoming ceremony at Ft. Campbell and on May 30, in Washington, DC at Army Intelligence HQ.
