RIDE REPORT:
On July 6th 2009, Spc. Isaac Johnson gave the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our Nation. On July 16th and July 17th, We, The Patriot Guard Riders were there to honor this brave soldier.
After receiving notice of Spc. Johnson’s sacrifice, Wordsmith asked me to take this mission as RCIC. It was an honor to be asked. Confirmation of this mission came fairly quickly in the process. The Johnson family wanted every honor for their loved one who had given his all. The Patriot Guard was a big part of their wishes to honor Isaac.
We were able to find out that many parts of this Mission were going to be executed in Phenix City AL. With this information we asked for help from our AL brothers and sisters. AL Asst. State Caption Mike Childree stepped up to the plate and we worked this as a joint mission. Thanks for all of your help Mike, and the rest of the AL PGR!
While getting the mission confirmed came fairly quick, further details were very hard to come by. Due to some issues at Dover AFB, no dates, times or even a funeral home could be chosen. This let to several days of waiting for the information to start to flow again.
On Wednesday July 15th, the information came and it came all at once. I was informed at 2:20pm that we would be providing the airport escort the next morning, the flight was due to arrive a 9:43am (this is what time it was SUPPOSED to be in). Wordsmith sent out a request for an urgent short notice mass email. The email ended up coming out at around 10:00pm. Needless to say, my expectations for having many PGR members at the airport were pretty low.
On Thursday morning I was so very pleased when approx 20 PGR members arrived to help escort this hero. Thank you so very much each and every one of you who were there. We had just started the briefing when I found out that our hero was going to land about 25 min. earlier than expected. This was just the first of many major chances that would come in the next 30 hours or so. As normal, the members of this great organization handled the changes like the pros that they are and we were all in place when our hero landed. The family wanted the PGR in front of them, they wanted to see those American Flags flying in honor of their loved one. The escort, while a fairly short one, was one of honor and respect. Once we arrived at the funeral home, Isaacs father, with tears in his eyes, came to each and every member of the PGR to thank us for being there to honor his son.
Thursday evening the PGR stood in honor of Isaac at the funeral home. Again I was very pleased with the turn out. I didn’t actually count how many we had but I think we had over 10 members there. Once again, Isaac’s father made it to each and every member to make sure that we knew how thankful their family was that we were there for them.
Friday morning started off with a chance right off the bat. It wasn’t even official staging time yet when I got a call from Mike Childree that he and the escort to the church were leaving in about 2 mins. Needless to say we went into a “two minute drill” so to speak. We only had about 15 min before they would arrive at the church. Once again, the 20 or so PGR members responded and we had the flagline in place when our hero arrived.
After the service, to do a breakdown in communication with LEO, we ended up getting to Ft. Mitchell a little ahead of schedule. It actually turned out ok however because this gave us time to have the flag line in place before the hearse and the family arrived at the grave site.
As the service at the gravesite was coming to a close, Wordsmith and I were asked to step in line with the VIP’s to pay our respects on behalf of the PGR to the family. I have done this many times over the years, and while I consider it a HUGE honor, it is always hard for me to see the pain in the eyes of family members. This time was no different. I walked away with a huge lump in my throat, and tears in my eyes.
While the turn out for Spc. Johnson was 20 instead of 100 due to the short notice nature of this Mission, I can tell you without a doubt, that the PGR made a difference for this family. They know that there are in fact Americans who mourn with them and in some very small way, share their loss.
Thanks to everyone who played a part in making this mission a success. Mike Childree and all of our AL brothers and sisters, a huge thank you to all of you! Soretoe, thank you for providing a flag wagon for us and for acting as mentor for this mission. Wordsmith, thanks for trusting me with this mission and for all of your help getting it put together. But most importantly, a HUGE thank you to each and every person who stood in the flag line over the two days of this mission. Without the flag line, there would be no PGR! |
