Randi, you and your family are in my prayers and I have asked all members of my church, Riverland Hills Baptist, here in Columbia to pray for you. While none of us know exactly how long we have here on this earth, I am sorry that your time with Matthew was so short.

We have a saying in the South Carolina Patriot Guard...............Listen For The Rumble.

The rumble of the Patriot Guard will be heard in the Lowcountry.  Men and women with grim faces will ride in your honor.  That rumble will cause people to turn.  They'll whisper to each other and they'll know that you are passing their way........an American hero.  One who stood between danger and his people.

On the day of your funeral Staff Sergeant, your people will come.  They will stand by and weep silently for your loss.  They will see that you are honored.  They will allow nothing to disturb your family.

Randi, My name is Hugh O’Handley, I am a civilian Department of Defense worker in Iraq and I’m currently on a small base in the South (Scania). Previously, I was on Victory Base Complex (VBC) and Camp Liberty from Dec 07 through Sept 11th 08 where I saw many Soldiers from 10th Mountain Division. I’m told that 10th Mountain controls the area I’m in now but the Soldiers I’m with now are from my old Division in Vietnam; the 101st Airborne.
I wanted you and your children to know that I see our Proud Soldiers everyday and they never cease to amaze me. Everyday they mount up and go out in the red zone to face the enemy. They do it with enthusiasm, a positive attitude and with obvious courage. My job has often taken me to the exit gates where they get ready and go out. Sometimes they are hard to see through the armored glass of their vehicles but I always wave and when they see me they wave back and without exception they are smiling, resolute and ready for the job at hand.
I will forever remember their faces, so young, so positive and so reassuring. I wish every American could have the honor of witnessing this true heroism in the making.
I am so very sorry for the loss of your Husband and the father of your children. You can rest assured that you are not alone in your mourning; we here, Soldiers and Civilians alike mourn every loss as though they were part of our own family; just as we do back home in the PGR. I am sorry that I will miss the opportunity to honor Matthew at his last formation but know that I and I’m sure his Comrades in Iraq will be thinking about him and his family as you lay him to rest this weekend.
May God bless Matthew, You, your children and your extended family and hold you close during your time of loss and the rest of your days.
