Thank you for your service and sacrifice in defending and protecting our freedoms. As a nation we mourn your loss, and we will remember you always as a true American hero. We must never forget who gets the credit for the Freedoms we have, of which we should be eternally grateful. I watched the flag pass by one day, It fluttered in the breeze. A young Marine saluted it, And then he stood at ease.. I looked at him in uniform So young, so tall, so proud, With hair cut square and eyes alert He'd stand out in any crowd. I thought how many men like him Had fallen through the years. How many died on foreign soil How many mothers' tears? How many pilots' planes shot down? How many died at sea How many foxholes were soldiers' graves? No, freedom isn't free. Florida Ride Report – SSgt Christopher D. Strickland – 05 JUL 08
Another Hero, as my eyes fell upon the DoD Release that arrived in my mailbox the evening of 26 June, this time a 25 year old Marine from Labelle.
The next morning I contacted the USMC CAO to see if our presence was requested by the Family. I was informed there were to be no services in Florida at this time; only in California and interment is to be in the hallowed grounds of Arlington National Cemetery.
Though through the power of the internet, it was found out over the weekend that there was to be a Memorial Service in Labelle on Saturday. Monday morning I contacted the CAO, again. Several phone calls later, I was informed that the Patriot Guard Riders were indeed invited to Stand in Respect for SSgt Christopher D. Strickland.
I started out for Labelle about 0930 hrs after taking the scenic tour, I pulled down a flag draped N. Main Street at about 1045 hrs. Riders came in from all over South Florida to Honor Our Fallen Hero. We had a total of 97 bikes, several were 2 up and 2 cages. We welcomed about 6 new members during the mission briefing and the flag line was set on both sides of the street, trying to keep most everyone in the shade, at precisely noon. At that time, I was informed by LEO that The Family would arrive close to 1300 hrs, however, mourners started to gather in the church.
Once the service started, we broke the flag line so everyone could have a chance to relax and cool off. We re-set the flag line about 45 minutes later with everyone on the opposite side of the street as the 3 shot volley pierced the afternoon sky and Taps was played up to the heavens. We held the flag line until after the Family had drove off from the church at which time the PGR was dismissed.
I normally wait until the last Rider has pulled out to ensure that everyone is safely on their way. Today was no different, however, as I walked across the parking lot of the church, my head hung as my mind drifted to the Family that just said good-bye to their Hero, a young man of 25, named Chris.

To The Family of SSgt Strickland, please know that Christopher is a True American Hero. He will not be Forgotten, his legacy will live on in me as well as ALL who stood beside me to Honor your Loved One. Thank you for inviting us. It was truly my Honor, to be the Ride Captain for Christopher’s services, to be with you during this time and the only place I wanted to be today…you will forever be in my heart.
