Well, we escorted Sgt. Portell from the airport to the mortuary this afternoon. We had around 10 or 12 PGR. BPD and the Highway Patrol cleared the way. It was around 70F, which was nice. It got alot of local media coverage of course. I happened to get interviewed, so if you see me on the news, let me apologize for a not very articulate delivery. Public speaking is definitely not my forte. Thanks Basil! Rain is forecast for Friday, but we'll be rollin' anyway.

Our most heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Sgt. Benjamin Portell. My God comfort you during this most difficult time. Ben, thank you for your service and sacrafice, you will never be forgotten. Riding with you in spirit.......

We must never forget who gets the credit for the Freedoms we have, of which we should be eternally
grateful.

I watched the flag pass by one day,
It fluttered in the breeze.
A young Marine saluted it,
And then he stood at ease..
I looked at him in uniform
So young, so tall, so proud,
With hair cut square and eyes alert
He'd stand out in any crowd.
I thought how many men like him
Had fallen through the years.
How many died on foreign soil
How many mothers' tears?
How many pilots' planes shot down?
How many died at sea
How many foxholes were soldiers' graves?
No, freedom isn't free.
I heard the sound of Taps one night,
When everything was still,
I listened to the bugler play
And felt a sudden chill.
I wondered just how many times
That Taps had meant "Amen,"
When a flag had draped a coffin.
Of a brother or a friend.
I thought of all the children,
Of the mothers and the wives,
Of fathers, sons and husbands
With interrupted lives .
I thought about a graveyard
At the bottom of the sea
Of unmarked graves in Arlington.
No, freedom isn't free.

***Mission Complete*** Sgt Benjamin Brian Portell July 16, 1980 – December 26, 2007. We met At Bakersfield HD for the initial ride brief, thank you to the BFL HD staff who offered us coffee and a warm place to meet. We briefed the mission and headed over to the River Lakes Community Church at 1030 with 13 bikes and 14 PGR members. We arrived at the church at 1040 and worked out the routing to the Hill of Valor with the Bakersfield PD. While we were waiting for the completion of the service, the friendly staff at River Lakes Community Church offered us a place to rest and provided free coffee and a remote feed for those who wished to watch the service. The weather Gods must have been watching because we managed to stay dry all day. We formed a flag line for our hero and quickly mounted our bikes in preparation for the escort. We left the church at 1355 with the Bakersfield PD leading the way on bikes. The trip from the church to the Hill of Valor was a 15 mile ride through downtown Bakersfield, which would have been a nightmare were it not for the Bakersfield PD and California Highway Patrol who blocked every intersection along the route. Extremely high winds and Volkswagen sized tumbleweeds made for an interesting ride. We arrived at the Hill of Valor and, along with uniformed members of the U.S. Navy, U.S. Army, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Bakersfield Police, and California Highway Patrol, formed a flag-line. We were truly honored to stand at attention while Sgt Portell received the Meritorious Service Medal, Bronze Star, and Purple Heart. It is clear that Ben was an amazing soldier, son, husband and friend. I want to thank the Portell family for allowing us to be a part of this funeral and offer condolences from my PGR family to your amazing family. Thank you very much. Thanks to all of the Patriot Guard Riders for being patient with me as I worked out the kinks, your flexibility and kindness highlight why I am proud to be a member of the PGR.
