UPDATE:

RC Tony Stokley just called with this update after visiting the church.

The family and hearse are scheduled to arrive at the chuch around 0900 Monday.

We would like to have a flag line in place when they arrive.  If you can, please try to be at the church around 0830 so that the flag line can be in place before 0900.

If you can't be there that early, please come whenever you can.  See my post above for regular staging details.

Use the front entrance from De Zavala Road.  The flag line will be at the front of the church.

Expect very heavy rush hour traffic on IH-10 and on N. Loop 1604 that time of morning.

Current forecast is for 30% chance of rain with a morning low of 52 and a high of only 70.  Dress accordingly.  If you feel you need to, cage it, as there is no procession to ride in.

Our sincere condolences to the family and friends of another American Hero. Thanks for being our hero.Thank you for your dedicated service and your sacrifice to defend this great Nation.... God Bless.

Final Inspection

The soldier stood and faced God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining.
Just as brightly as his brass.
"Step forward now,soldier.
How shall I deal with you ?
Have you always turned the other cheek ?
To My Church have you been true ?"
The officer squared his shoulders and said,
"No,Lord, I guess I ain't.
Because those of us who carry guns,
Can't always be a saint.
I've had to work most Sundays,
And at times my talk was tough.
And sometimes I've been violent,
Because the world is awfully rough.
But, I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep....
Though I worked a lot of overtime.
When the bills got just too steep.
And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes,God, forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.
I know I don't deserve a place,
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around,
Except to calm their fears.
If you've a place for me here,Lord.
It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't,I'll understand.
There was a silence all around the throne,
Where the saints had often trod.
As the soldier waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.
"Step forward now,soldier
You've borne your burdens well.
Walk peacefully on Heaven"s streets,
You"ve done your time in Hell."

The San Antonio services for Lt Martin are complete, however, the Martins told me that the PGR is requested for the memorial in Arkansas.

The internment at West Point will be a private family service.

We would like to thank the Martins for inviting us.  It was a true honor to stand the flag line for Tom and to meet you.

Tony Stokley did a great job on his first RC mission.  Thank you, Bro.

Everyone "caged" it due to the frontal passage, but stood the flag line with honor.  The strong northerly winds had our flags standing out straight and it was cold, but everyone took it in stride.  At least the rains had moved on by the time we started and we were dry.  Andyman, thanks for coming down from Austin and for bringing the small flags.  That was a very nice touch.

Thank you to our friends in the SAPD for all that you do.

Thank you to University United Methodist Church for providing hot coffee, snacks and a place to get warmed up!

Most of all, thank you to 1st Lt. Thomas Martin for a life well lived and for your service and devotion to our nation.    We will remain eternally grateful.

Rest In Peace, Tom.

George, as usual it was great to see you again. It is an honor to serve with you and your fellow San Antonio PGR members. Also it was great to see my first PGR mentor, Master Chief, who patiently tutored me on my first mission as a Leader from AUS to SAT. It's been too long, my friend, but under the circumstances it's also way too soon.

George, I can't take credit for those small flags. They were provided by the church ladies that were busy laying out the spread for the services. They wanted to do more, and asked if they could put them outside somewhere. Dressed nicely and considering the weather, we offered to handle the outside work for them. We thanked the kind elders and installed their flags along the walkway after they made us eat brownies and drink coffee. In hindsight I should have collected and returned them. I didn't finish the job...

Until next time...

Andyman

Sir,
Thank you for the update-Tom was another good friend of mine. I saw your first email while I was going back to Afghanistan from R&R-I don't think I can take a midtour leave without something bad happening, I am afraid.

Tom helped me out when I was a barely-18 year old girl with BCGs on during beast as a member of my platoon, was a plebe in A-1 with me, and a good friend throught the rest of the time at the Academy. I remember he liked to organize us as plebes into spirit missions. We were alike in that both of our parents were Army too-it was in our blood. He and I shared our heartbreak stories with each other, and I was soooooo happy for him when he finally met and got engaged to Erika. I was so proud of him when he graduated Ranger school.

Thank you so much for all you have done.

ATW,
Yolanda

I would like to extend my deepest condolences to the family and friends of this American Hero who stood tall for his homeland in this very sad time in your lives, but remember that you knew a hero first hand while the rest of us just get to hear about their heroic deeds. My prayers are that our GOD may bring peace and comfort to all of you during this tragic time. Please know that not just me , but a country full of people like me owe you a dept that can never be repaid. But please know that your loved one is now serving in the Army of our LORD in heaven, and the LORD said if I go to prepare a place for you, I will come again and recieve you unto myself that where I am there you may be also. Know that it says in the Bible in 2nd Corinthians 5:8 , we are confident I say , willing rather to be absent from the body and present with the LORD. No one can ever say that your loved one isn't a HERO, they were willing to serve that the rest of us may enjoy the freedom we do today, and the sacrifice you and your family have endured so our nation can remain the home of the free because of the brave. We are all brothers and sisters in arms and we don't forget one of our own, rest in peace my comrade, your mission is complete and now it's time for you to rest. May GOD Bless each and everyone of you.
