My heart breaks every time we lose another hero.  To the Nelson family....  my thoughts are with you in your darkest hour.  Trust that SSgt Nelson had a speedy journey home to God and is watching over you now.

My most sincere condolences on our Nation's great loss of a fine soldier.
I got word of this today from my coworker. His son was Andrew's best friend, and was with him when this happened. Such a great loss. I will be there if we have services for him at Fort Snelling.

Attached is his history...

Does anyone have contact info for the family? My coworker's son was by his side when he died. They were best of friends.
Here is a link to the obit with a video tribute. Very nice.

This is a note from my coworker, George, who's son was his best friend.

Thank you Alicia;
Stephen and Andrew met at Bragg, and would spend much of their "down time" together. However, Stephen and Andrew never saw each other while deployed, because they weren't in the same unit. I believe God placed Stephen with Andrew at the end of Andrew's life for a purpose. I know Stephen was able to pray for Andrew before he slipped away.

Thank you for your very kind offer to lay roses at Andrew's grave site. This brought tears to my wife's eyes and mine when we read this. We would very much appreciate that. I don't have any information on when Andrew's internment is. I'm guessing it will be Sept. 6 or 7th.
I have been trying to obtain address information on Andrew's mother Susan Nelson, and sister Jessica Nelson. Stephen has also tried to contact Andrew's girlfriend, Karrie (we don't know her last name).

You have been a good friend, and your kindness has helped me get through this ordeal with my son being in Iraq.

Sincerely,

George

Received from David J. Woodward:

Our Honor Mission for SSG Andrew P. Nelson, 82nd Airborne Division, who gave his life during his Service to our Country in Iraq on August 29, 2007, has been completed.

On Tuesday, September 4th, 2007, 35 Patriot Guards stood Honor Flag Lines for the arrival of SSG Andrew Nelson at the Fargo Jet Center, Fargo ND. We had a Flag Line at the entrance to the Jet Center and when Andrew arrived, we moved all Patriot Guards into the Jet Center Hangar to set a Flag Line to shield the Family from news cameras at the request of the Family. After a brief Prayer Ceremony in the hangar, the Flag Line was released to mount up for the Honor Escort from the Jet Center to Korsmo Funeral Services site in Moorhead, Minnesota. The Honor Escort Mission was completed with the assistance of Clay County, Minnesota, Sheriff's department and Moorhead and Fargo City Police escorts.

On Wednesday, September 5th, 2007, approximately 15 Patriot Guards did an Escort Mission from Korsmo Funeral Service in Moorhead to Sts. Anne & Joachim Catholic Church in Fargo, ND. Awaiting the arrival of Andrew at the church were approximately 12 Patriot Guards set up for the Honor Line for the transfer of Andrew into the church for the Visitation Service. All 27 Patriot Guards then stood the Flag Line from 4:00pm to 7:40pm to Honor Andrew and his Family and Friends as they came to give their last respects. Again this Mission was assisted by the Clay County Sheriff and Moorhead and Fargo City Police Departments.

Thursday, September 6th, 2007. At 6:15am 10 Patriot Guards staged for the Escort Mission for Andrew from Sts. Anne & Joachim Church to St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Moorhead, MN for his Funeral Mission. At 8:30am the Honor Flag Lines were set for the Visitation Period from 9:00am to 10:00am and the Funeral Service from 10:00am to 11:30am. At the end of the Church component of the Funeral Service, a Military Honor Guard completed the Funeral Service outside the Church with the traditional 21 gun salute and Taps. All Patriot Guards were formed up around the Service area to again shield the Family from news media. Upon completion of the Military Honor Service, the Patriot Guards again escorted Andew from the Church to Korsmo Funeral Service. We were assisted by Clay County Sheriff and Moorhead City Police Departments for this final Escort Mission..

Andew's Interment Mission was completed on Friday, September 7th, 2007, at Fort Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis. In excess of 50 Patriot Guard Riders joined Color Guards from the VFW, American Legion and others to stand the Honor Flag as Andrew's final Mission on this Earth was completed.

A Big Patriot Guard Rider thanks must be given to Sheriff Bill Bergquist, Clay County, Minnesota for his presence at every phase of our Escorts and his coordination of all the Law Enforcement Officers who assisted us to provide flawless Escorts in our Honoring of SSG Andrew P. Nelson. Our PGR thanks also to Casualty Assistance Officer SFC Brent Fuhrman, whose professionalism in assisting the Patrioit Guards was unquestionably needed and for the Service he provided in assisting Andrew's immediate Family in their grief. Tom Pence of Korsmo Funeral Service also deserves a PGR thanks for all the assistance provided. In addition, I have to give my personal thanks to Ride Captains Jeff Anderson, Alexandria, MN and Tim Moen, West Fargo, ND for stepping up and taking on the Wednesday Mission responsibilities and to Assistant Ride Captain John "Indian John" Thompson III, SE Metro Sector, Minneapolis, MN for taking care of the Interment Service at Fort Snelling National Cemetery. And, of course I personally thank every Patriot Guard Rider who showed their Honor, Dignity, and Respect for our Fallen Hero, SSG Andrew P. Nelson, in person or in spirit. We all Ride Together to Honor Our Heroes.

Andrew, may you rest in eternal peace at the side of your God and in the arms of your fellow Fallen Heroes.

Mission Complete.
