A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve --is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.'

That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today, who no longer understand that fact.

I attended the escort from the airport, a shift on the 24 hour honor guard, and the visitation  but work will  prevent me from attending the funeral today.  I will be there  in spirit however.  I have  met friends at the visitation including a gold star mom from my first mission.  I didn't  know Jeremy but it's amazing how many people that I know that did know him.  Attached is  Jeremy's  memorial card. I will share the original of this card on the memorial wall at Northender's VFW.

I appreciate all of the PGR folks who made the trip to our community.   I was impressed and gratified by the large turnout.   I enjoyed meeting all the folks who erre there.

I'll stand anywhere with any of the PGR members I met.

.

If you'll pardon a small side story, one of my prouder moments during the weekend was when the funeral procession pulled into the cemetery.

Right by the side of the road was my Son with his scout troop.  They were all standing at attention, rendering a scout salute as the procession went by.  I instinctively waved at himl, but he didn't flinch.

Made me damned proud.

He'll dry each tear we've cried
Eternal life bestowed

Mission Accomplished:

06/09/2007

I would like to thank, Ride Captains Randy Smith, Jim Storck, and Arne Dahlgren for a job well done on the escort, I was told by several members that even though we had a problem with the change of time we still had a great turnout, I would also like to thank the Illinois State Police, Macoupin County Sheriff’s department, and Carlinville Police for doing an outstanding job escorting from the St. Louis Regional Airport to the funeral home in Carlinville, I received nothing but good comments about how smooth the escort went. I also want to thank all the PGR members that attended, especially the ones that showed up on 06/08/2007 when the flight was cancelled, I thank all of you for showing your support for the Costello Family. I also want to thank all of the PGR members that stepped up to provide the 24/7 Honor Guard for Cpl. Jeremiah D. Costello.

06/10/2007

We staged at the high school parking lot @ 1:30pm to prepare the flag line at the funeral home, we headed over to set up the flag line before the family arrived at 3:00pm we started with about 10 PGR members and 3 members of the Soldiers Angels as we got everything set up we were also joined by the Peace Riders of Carlinville, we all stood proud to honor Cpl. Jeremiah D. Costello, as the family entered I spoke with Jeremiah’s mother for a quick second and she told me that she appreciated all that we do and that she would be joining the PGR, I let her know we would be honored to have her and her family as members, after the visitation was over and most of the people had started leaving Jeremiah’s brother Darrell came and got me so Randy and I could give the blanket’s from the Linus Project to the children, this is the part that really got to me I think the hardest because Jeremiah has a 4 year old daughter named Lilly, and I also have a daughter named Lilly who is 6 years old, I handed Lilly a pink and green blanket that had frogs all over it and at that point Jeremiah’s mother they used to say Jeremiah was a bullfrog, so that blanket was a fitting gift for such a special little girl, it is things like that that make me proud to do what I do for the families of fallen soldiers, we then continued to hand out blankets for Clayton, Jacob, Molly, and Logan before we left Lilly and Molly came over and gave me a hug, this was hard but you should have seen how their eyes lit up when they received the blankets, I was so proud to be involved with this mission, after the visitation was over several more dedicated PGR members took over with the 24/7 Honor Guard I was overwhelmed at the participation, we had 2 PGR members covering on 2 hour shifts and we covered all the days with no problem, I thank all involved for all the time you put in for this family and I know the family thanks all of you from the bottom of their hearts. I have to send a little special thanks out to John Stewart for bringing his RV for PGR members to use during the 24/7 Honor Guard.

06/11/2007

I woke up around 3:00am with Randy and John the day was beautiful, Randy and John took over the Honor Guard from 4-6am and then Lloyd arrived around 5am and myself and Lloyd took over the Honor Guard, around 7:30am Jeremiah was taken to the Carlinville Southern Baptist Church myself and Randy then went to the High School parking lot to get ready for the day, we started having members arrive around 8:30am but due to my mistake I was not aware that the family was going to be at the church at 9:00am and I posted on our website that staging time was 9:30am so Randy stayed at the staging area and waited for other riders as I took the ones that were there to the church to get the flag line set up, Randy soon arrived with 12-15 more riders making a total of around 42 PGR members present which was an awesome turn out for a Monday, we had the flag line set up at the church we the funeral director came out and advised me that the family wished for all the PGR members to come in and walk through to Honor Jeremiah, this was a first for me as we normally stay outside, we then had a member at the door collecting flags as each member went in to pay their respects, as they exited we went back to our mission, as Jeremiah was brought out I called the PGR to attention and then presented arms, the precession was awesome starting with around 6 State Police Motorcycles, State Police Car, Macoupin County Sheriff’s, and the Carlinville Police then the funeral director, then 2 PGR members with large flags, 2 more State Police Motorcycles, 4 State Police Motorcycles on all 4 corners of the hearse, then 2 more State Police Motorcycles behind the hearse then 2 more PGR members with big flags, followed by the family then the rest of our PGR members, your respect for this family made me proud. The town people turned out to honor Jeremiah during the escort to Mayfield cemetery, the Carlinville Police shut the entire town down all roads were blocked, when we arrived at the cemetery the fire departments and boy scouts were there showing support as well, we then set up the flag line at the cemetery, after the military service was complete myself, Randy, and Arne presented our American Flag, Illinois Flag, the plaque will be presented at a later date, I also presented them with 2 soldiers angel’s coins. I again would like to thank all that took part in this mission, the State Police, Macoupin Co. Sheriff’s Department, Carlinville Police, all the residence that took their time and stopped what they were doing to Honor this American Hero, all the businesses who allowed their employees to come out along the road to show respect, I thank all of you if I missed anyone I apologize as there were so many to thank. I will be presenting the plaque in the next week or so anyone that wishes to ride along with me is welcome.

I thought soem of the PGR folks who were there might like to read this.  In an article in the local paper, the reporter said:

"One of the most touching moments on the day took place right before the start of the funeral. All the police officers, Peace Riders and Patriot Guards lined up to come to Costello’s coffin, one by one, each saluting the fallen soldier."

You can read the article here for the next few days:
