Swiger Family,
Please know that each of us acknowledge with a heavy heart the sacrifice made and that you are in our thoughts and prayers.
The bond between your family and those not known is strong. Your son will be among friends all the way home - from the requested piper for Jason's memorial service at Ft. Bragg to his home in Maine.

May God bless you Swiger family.

Rest in peace Brother Jason.

First , Thank you Jason for stepping up when others didn't even see the need to protect our country our children and our families, that courageous act of signing on the dotted line, knowing as each of us warriors have know in the past, that we might be called to sacrifice all to accomplish our mission. Rest in peace good Sgt and say hi to SSG Dale Kelly KIA May6, 2006. for I know he will welcome you at the gates with your next assignment.

To Mrs. Alanna Swiger, you do not know me yet but I know you, what you are feeling, thinking and most of all your grief. I am only 11 months up the road from you and pray for you nightly. Never never forget that Jason is, was and will always be yours - no matter where life may take you he will live forever in your heart, create the things that will help you remember. Know that this fog, anger, numbness is all part of it and the time ahead will be difficult, There may even be times you feel like the only way is to join him, know that that is not a choice and that there are those of us who can help you through this valley of death. Sister it pains me to met you this way but since Dale's death I have offerred to each new widow what I offer you, my hand, my heart, my prayers and my experience. When the gun shots have sounded and the echo of taps lies heavy on your heart all will go on with their lives, they will want to be there for you but will not know how - it is in that time I will come to you if you will let me and we will grieve and forge a road through the wasteland our husband's death have left for us. You know that going on is how Jason would want it . you can reach me day or night at 207 737-4013 or 207-680-8384 or by email at machinegunsmate@yahoo.com. No introduction is needed you are part of an elite club now and your dues have been marked paid. my God hold you during this time and for all of the tommorrows coming.

To the family and friends of this brave hero - their is no greater sacrifice than to lay down ones life for his fellow man, this gift of freedom that we Americans take so freely and take for granted even more freely has always had a price attached to it. Jason courageously stepped up and said I will pay in and pay it with my blood if need be. The headline we never see " Another brave American enlisted in the armed forces today" the story would follow - This true American has signed a paper that begins a process that creates a warrior who is so much more than when they enlisted and will stand day and night in the gap to ensure that freedon becomes the legacy for the generations to come. Jason learned and lived seven values as a member of our military. These seven values are what makes men like Jason stand heads above the average

Loyalty-
Bear true faith and allegiance to the U.S. Constitution, the Army, your unit and other Soldiers. Bearing true faith and allegiance is a matter of believing in and devoting yourself to something or someone. A loyal Soldier is one who supports the leadership and stands up for fellow Soldiers. By wearing the uniform of the U.S. Army you are expressing your loyalty. And by doing your share, you show your loyalty to your unit.

Duty
Fulfill your obligations. Doing your duty means more than carrying out your assigned tasks. Duty means being able to accomplish tasks as part of a team. The work of the U.S. Army is a complex combination of missions, tasks and responsibilities—all in constant motion. Our work entails building one assignment onto another. You fulfill your obligations as a part of your unit every time you resist the temptation to take “shortcuts” that might undermine the integrity of the final product.

Respect
Treat people as they should be treated. In the Soldier’s Code, we pledge to “treat others with dignity and respect while expecting others to do the same.” Respect is what allows us to appreciate the best in other people. Respect is trusting that all people have done their jobs and fulfilled their duty. And self-respect is a vital ingredient with the Army value of respect, which results from knowing you have put forth your best effort. The Army is one team and each of us has something to contribute.

Selfless Service
Put the welfare of the Nation, the Army and your subordinates before your own. Selfless service is larger than just one person. In serving your country, you are doing your duty loyally without thought of recognition or gain. The basic building block of selfless service is the commitment of each team member to go a little further, endure a little longer, and look a little closer to see how he or she can add to the effort.

Honor
Live up to Army values. The Nation’s highest military award is The Medal of Honor. This award goes to Soldiers who make honor a matter of daily living—Soldiers who develop the habit of being honorable, and solidify that habit with every value choice they make. Honor is a matter of carrying out, acting, and living the values of respect, duty, loyalty, selfless service, integrity and personal courage in everything you do.

Integrity
Do what’s right, legally and morally. Integrity is a quality you develop by adhering to moral principles. It requires that you do and say nothing that deceives others. As your integrity grows, so does the trust others place in you. The more choices you make based on integrity, the more this highly prized value will affect your relationships with family and friends, and, finally, the fundamental acceptance of yourself.

Personal Courage
Face fear, danger or adversity (physical or moral). Personal courage has long been associated with our Army. With physical courage, it is a matter of enduring physical duress and at times risking personal safety. Facing moral fear or adversity may be a long, slow process of continuing forward on the right path, especially if taking those actions is not popular with others. You can build your personal courage by daily standing up for and acting upon the things that you know are honorable.

I am an American Soldier. I am a member of the United States Army -- a protector of the greatest nation on earth. Because I am proud of the uniform I wear, I will always act in ways creditable to the military service and the nation it is sworn to guard.

I am proud of my own organization. I will do all I can to make it the finest unit in the Army. I will be loyal to those under whom I serve. I will do my full part to carry out orders and instructions given to me or my unit.

As a soldier, I realize that I am a member of a time-honored profession--that I am doing my share to keep alive the principles of freedom for which my country stands. No matter what the situation I am in, I will never do anything, for pleasure, profit, or personal safety, which will disgrace my uniform, my unit, or my country. I will use every means I have, even beyond the line of duty, to restrain my Army comrades from actions disgraceful to themselves and to the uniform.

I am proud of my country and its flag. I will try to make the people of this nation proud of the service I represent, for I am an American Soldier.

Know dear family that for all too short a time you loved and rubbed elbows with one of the finest Americans of this decade and forever you can call him yours. Stay strong, keep faith and know that I stand kickstands up to assisit in any way that will bring honor to this family and to Sgt. Jason Swiger, may you rest in peace, well done soldier, Hooah!

The Wake today....Job well done everyone who participated. Sheila thanks for the ribbons and arm bands. The PGR was thanked several times today by everyone. The mother and wife came out and hugged each of us and thanked u s for being there. The tough part for me was seeing a soldier cry to his dad, his dad is Jason's step-dad. To see this man console his son and mourn the loss of his stepson. A two star general also thanked each one of us. Tomorrow will come soon enough and god be with the families in this time of need. We will stand to honor Jason.
