Marshall Sector Ride Captain, Minnesota

Mission Report

What can I say, except "Thank You !" Suffering a somewhat fitfull night before my first mission as a Ride Captain, we woke up at 6:00 am to 21 degrees, snow flurries, and 40 mph wind. By staging time, the snow had stopped, but the wind continued, and the temperature dropped to 9 degrees, giving SW Mn windchills far below zero. Should I have been worried if anyone would come?

It took two sign-in sheets to get everyone registered! 38 PGR's if I counted correctly, braved the cold to stand watch for Specialist Rebecca Hall. We walked two blocks to the church, and awaited arrival of the immediate family on the 'warm' side of the church. After their arrival, half the group was assigned to the street side entrance, and both groups manned the doors for the arriving mourners, as well as standing in the flag line. Several members of ABATE joined us in the flag line, until time for them to attend the services. An observant PGR noticed the sidewalks at the main entrance filling in with snow, and a snow shovel was located and the walks kept clear. An overflow crowd eventually all arrived for the 10:30 service, and we took a welcome break from the cold, in a room provided to us by the church, complete with hot coffee.

Fifteen minutes before the end of the service, we again assembled with our flags in a foyer of the church, and the mourners filed past us silently and respectfully to the fellowship hall, where dinner was served. Not surprisingly in small town Mn, we were invited to have dinner, and many enjoyed the hospitality of the Lutheran Church women who served the meal.

We finished our mission by again forming a flag line outside the church on both sides of the street, and the funeral procession drove through the avenue of flags on the way to the cemetary in a neighboring town.

We had at least two PGR members on their first mission, and many familiar faces as well. About half our group was able to attend the 'Meet and Greet" where we relaxed and warmed up before leaving for our homes. Thanks to all who were able to attend, and to all who stood with us in spirit.

On behalf of the Mn PGR, a special thanks to Holy Redeemer School, for allowing us the use of their parking lot, the directors at Hamilton Burke Funeral Home, Sgt Green of the Marshall National Guard, Mark Peters of Buffalo Ridge ABATE, and the church ladies and custodians of First Lutheran Church for their warm hospitality.

On a personal level, I would like to thank Paul Ramsbey and Lori Musolf who helped out as assistant Ride Captains, and especially Kevin Peterson, the previous ride captain for this sector, who can't ever finish a conversation without saying, "If you need any help, just call me."

And to the family, friends, and fellow National Guard personel of Specialist Hall -- It was our privilege to stand watch today for your loved one.

Avatar picture taken at Hector, Mn., Municipal Airport, where a T33 was erected in memory of my first cousin and best friend, Capt Robert C. Swanson, USAF, who died in service to his country in 1978, and in whose memory I ride with the PGR, to honor all who have served our nation.

Becky's untimely death reminds us that even in youth we may be called home
for the final role call, and we will all assume our place in the Angel's Guard.

I am sure her loss will be felt by her family and friends for the rest of the their
lives, and so I offer my prayers and condolences to all that morn her loss.
For whatever reason God chose her to ride with the angels, we here left
behind will not understand until the day we are in her presence with
He who never slumbers or sleeps. In the meantime we can be assured
that she will be here 'in spirit' with those who love her. And, she
will place a kiss upon their cheeks with the help of a gentle breeze.

May we always ride into the wind, kissed by those who have gone before us!
God's Speed Becky...! I will be honored to meet you someday!

PGR Ride Captain
