President Issues Proclamation in Honor of Gold Star Mothers

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, Sept. 22, 2006 – Since June 23, 1936, the last Sunday in September has been recognized as Gold Star Mother's Day, thanks to Senate Joint Resolution 115.

On Sept. 20, President Bush issued a proclamation declaring that, this year, Sept. 24 will be observed as Gold Star Mother's Day.

"I call upon all government officials to display the flag of the United States over government buildings on this solemn day," he said in the proclamation. "I also encourage the American people to display the flag and hold appropriate ceremonies as a public _expression of our nation's sympathy and respect for our Gold Star Mothers."

Gold Star Mothers have lost a son or daughter in service to the country.

Every generation has produced patriots willing to sacrifice for the nation. Many of these individuals have made the ultimate sacrifice. It's because of their sacrifices, and those of their mothers, that America lives in freedom, he said.

"In the words of President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1944, 'There's nothing adequate which anyone in any place can say to those who are entitled to display the gold star in their windows,'" Bush said. "On Gold Star Mother's Day, we pay special tribute to the mothers of those lost while defending our country and extending the blessings of liberty to others."

Hopefully the storms are out of here for the weekend. We just got power restored after six hours. Our daughter was trying to drive home during the worst of it when a very large tree fell into the road in front of her. She's okay, but it could have been a bad evening. So now that that stuff is gone we can get back to more important things.

I spoke with JP this evening re logistics for Sunday, but if others were trying to call you probably didn't get through. We can talk tomorrrow.

Regards,

John

Myself & BACKREST might have to pass on this mission.
Family  Emerg. came up and we may have to fly to Florida.
So as of now, if everything goes well we will be there, if we get a phone call we will be flying out. Either way our hearts will still be with the Gold Star Mothers.

I pray that even when I'm gone that our younger generation continues to show their Respect and Honor (war or no war) as we do in the PGR for all of our Hero’s.

Looking better than the earlier forcasts....After last night we sure don't need any more rain here in Geneva.  I got home to all of my neighbors holding rakes in the streets wading through 6-8" of water.  Thakkfully it didn't make it up to the house, but from the line of leaves and debree left when it receded it was close.  Speaking of which, Old Coastie,  I'm glad your daughter made it home safe.  I had to pull over in Wayne when the tornado sirens went off and I couldn't see through my windshield.  Definately too close for comfort.  Looking forward to honoring the Gold Star Mothers with you all tomorrow.  Ride safe.

Sunday

Came back from Iowa early.  Will leave from Aurora and take I-88 and the Ike tomorrow.  I'm confused about one thing:  Should I remove the small (10'x14") PGR flag from the back of my bike?   One of Chris's messages sounded like arm bands were ok, but no PGR flags.

Don't have the answer to that one.  I took mine off to be safe and replaced it with my Marine flag.
When in doubt, take it out.  But in this case, take it off.  Just following what Chris had said.  If you don't get any definites, Chris did post his cell #

I spoke with Chris and you don't have to take your Marine flag off your bike.  He was referring to the flag line being uniformly lined with US Flags.

We’re expecting about 100 but there will only be about 50 flags available so if you have one you can bring that would help.  But -- ride safe!!!

I sewed a back sling flag carrier out of a pant leg that fits the three-part flag poles.  Yep, the station attendants think it’s a weapon.  So I sewed a flag image on my bag.  We’ll see if that answers the questions on this trip.

Thanks, HarleyDoc and Ivetret.  I kinda thought Chris meant BIG PGR flags.  I'll keep my small one on the bike.  If I need to take it off, it'll take about 20 seconds with an allen wrench.

Ivetret - glad you survived the deer.  They can really mess up a car.  Odd time for them to be jaywalking on I-55.

I didn't have the problem with the deer -- YET.
Don't jinx me on I-55 tomorrow!!!!  Do you think deer will see a yellow safety vest?
See tiggerflying post on Aug 19 this forum.

Backroad, you are welcome to join up with us.  I am leaving Geneva at about 0700-0710 to get to Old Coastie's place in Wayne.  From there we are headed north on 25 to meet up with another group then somewhere else to meet another group.  Eventually, after witnessing what promises to be the grossest bathroom in Illinois and having to turn on my windshield wipers to clean the copenhagen off of my windshield, we will end up at Navy Pier.
I can't find my e-tool, so we may have to experience the bathroom in all of its glory.

Chris-  I swear I went to wash my cage today and it started raining.  I'll spray some armor all on the tires in the AM and try to wipe off a few of the bugs that still remain from Josh's welcome home in August.

JP -

Would love to join you guys, but have an early breakfast in Naperville to go to and don't want anyone wondering if I'm going to show up on time or not.  I'm so close to I-88 that it's a straight shot for me after that.

Ivetret / Tiggerflying -

I no sooner punched the button on that message, then I remembered it was Tiggerflying who got mixed up with the deer, not Ivetret.  Apologies to both of you - I'm still trying to sort out names.  Sometimes being in a hurry doesn't help matters either.

There was something weird about this event today. The fact that the Gold Star Mothers and their families gave the PGR a standing ovation seemed completely ass-backwards to me. It's not about us, and we should have been the ones giving them a standing ovation today.

If we get invited to attend again next year, I'd like to propose a completely different agenda. I'd like to propose that we pass the hat and provide each Gold Star Mother with a bouquet of flowers. I'd then like to stand the Gold Star Mothers in a line and have each of us pass by and say a few words of thanks to them for the sacrifice they've paid for our freedom, and then form a flag line in the back of the room.

Just my thoughts, and if it conflicts with anything from National, forget I ever said it - it was just an idea.

John
