Phase I Mission Summary ~ 85 Patriot Guard Members stood the flagline yesterday (Sunday) on the tarmac at Menominee, MI. airport. It was a beautiful, sunny day to bring Pfc Steven Drees home for his final rest. We had 64 motorcycles in escort with the family & the Military. The ride home went along Riverside Dr. for approx. 12 miles. It was our extreme honor to offer our support to his family. We will further support all of them on Tuesday & Wednesday for his visitation and burial. May God bless him and his family. Kudos to all involved in the ceremony yesterday. It was flawless in scope. Final Inspection

You will now be remembered as a HERO as you walk with the Heroes who have gone before you, and you to sir will not be forgotten. Your watch is now complete….your battle over, and we will take the watch from here. May God hold you gently in the palm of His hand until we all meet again.

It was truly an honor for my wife and I to stand the flagline for Pvt. Steve Drees with so many other committed patriots.  Steve's parents and only sibling, his twin brother, were obviously grateful to us for being there.  Many thanks to R/C Mike Weaver for a great job of leadership.  Steve:  R.I.P.  you've now got a rightful place in heaven where war shall be no more.

FINAL MISSION REPORT ~ The day of visitation for Pfc Drees' ceremomy (Tues) began with the motorcycle escort from the funeral home to Peshtigo H.S. at 0800 hrs. with PGR & law enforcement. The weather today, as well as Sunday from the airport was postcard-perfect. He was laid in state by the US Army Honor team from Ft. Leonard Wood, MO. SFC Volle was the NCOIC. We posted the flagline at 0930 hrs. 55 PGR's stood the line for 8.5 hrs. I would estimate that 2,000 paid their respects to the young soldier. We even had a young man from Ireland, Keith,stand in our flagline. He had been brought by another PGR member. 5 Goldstar families came to offer their condolences. The people of Peshtigo were most kind to all of us, and we were offered every courtesy to include food & water. The funeral was held in the school gym, that held 1400. It was overflowing. At 1800 hrs, we escorted Pfc Drees back to the funeral home with all of us & law enforcement again. The family held a large community picnic 3 blocks from the H.S. on the river & invited all of us. Approx. 15 PGR's came. It was a very special time of sharing, indeed. As with all small communites, everyone brought a dish to pass and there was every kind of salad, meats, & desserts imagineable. It was a good way to unwind from our duty & dialogue with the family & people from town. I stayed with a friend in town named Bill. He is a Marine Veteran & we stayed up & talked of the events of the day, until I could not keep my eyes open any further. I slept like a rock, from sheer exhaustion... Wednesday ~ Began by myself & my 2 ride captains assisting Bill & some Legion members, hoist approx 30 flags up on permanent poles in front of the cemetery. Each one of these flags were from local veterans burials. Their name had been inscribed on the seam of each flag. It was a sight to behold. We then went to breakfast & talked of the details of the day. Gathered at the funeral home for escort at 10:30 hrs. Had approx. 45 PGR's escort Pfc Dress to his final rest at Riverside Cemetery. Again, the weather was perfect. It was a private ceremony. Family, Military & Patriot Guard only. A slight breeze to furl the flags & keep the mosquitoes away.I think we were done by 12:45 hrs. We left as we had come. In silence. Another young American who died in defense of our country. He earned the Bronze Star as a result of his actions in his final firefight. We will NOT forget you, Pfc Drees. May the Good Lord give you his peace. "Save one backward glance, for the places they can no longer go".... Ladies and Gentlemen,

  My name is CPT Gianoulakis, and I was Steven's company commander over
here in Afghanistan.  I just wanted to say thank you for assisting
Steven and his family during his arrival home; as he completed his final
mission.   Your support is appreciated and wonderful.  I have had the
honor of assisting a Soldier home for the last time and know that is an
important mission that cannot be left to chance.  The time and energy
that you put into ensuring he received the honors deserved and rightly
earned keeping in line with the family's wishes is outstanding.   Thank
you for taking care of my Soldier and his family.
