Our sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of SSGT Eldon Heller. We are so sorry for your loss and share in your grief. May your loving memories of a long life, well-lived, bring you comfort and strength as you face the difficult days ahead.

Mr. Heller, thank you for your service to our great nation in her time of need so many years ago. You endured more than I can imagine - we owe you a debt of gratitude that cannot be repaid. I salute you for answering the call to duty, stepping up and putting yourself in harms way to defend America, protect and help preserve our way of life and the freedoms we enjoy every day. It is because of people like you that we have the freedoms we do. Thank you ~~

We will stand the flagline in spirit to honor your life and service as I am committed to a service for another Marine from the Chosin Reservoir. Rest easy as you take your place of honor alongside those who have gone before you.

       One of the first things boot Marines learn about is about the Chosin Few. To become Marine Corps legend is not an easy task. To stand for two of the heroes from this era on the same day is an honor which may never be repeated. Semper Fi, Marine, I salute you and the legend you helped to create. (I usually take care to be sure that my condolences are not "cookie cutter". In this case I will copy this post into the thread for the other Marine we will be saluting on Thursday because it seems fitting.) I pray that the family and friends of both of these Marines receive the attention of our Lord to ease their mourning period, and that He blesses them with understanding and happiness as they await the day they re-unite with their loved ones on the other side. Rest in peace Eldon, you are legend.

 Consider this: Iwo Jima is generally thought to be the most ferocious battle ever engaged in by Americans - yet compare it to The battle of the Chosin Reservoir during the Korean War.

·         Iwo lasted 36 days- Chosin was 15 days

·         Iwo had 6135 Americans Killed in action or 175 per day

·         Chosin had 3115 Americans killed in action or 208 per day

·         Iwo had 17841 Wounded or 510 per day

·         Chosin had 14000 wounded or 933 per day

·         Iwo contained 60,000 Marines

·         Chosin had 20,000 Marines  (17,000 Marines, 2,000 U.S. Army, and 1,000 British Royal Marines)

·         Iwo had 22 Medals of Honor awarded or one for every 2727 men

·         Chosin had 17 Medals of Honor awarded or one for every 1176 men

·         Iwo Marines outnumbered the Japanese 3 to 1

·         Chosin:  Chinese outnumbered the Americans 10 to 1

·         Iwo Marines killed 20,000 Japanese or 571 per day

·         Chosin Americans killed 28,000 Chinese or 1867 per day.

         The men of the Chosin fought their way over 73 miles of  a treacherous, icy, one lane,  mountainous road.

·          They fought night and day, often without food or sleep, under constant attack while overcoming roadblocks, and fighting off    ambush after ambush.

·         They did it in 45 below zero temperatures, with bone chilling winds blowing out of Siberia at Fifty miles per hour - bringing the wind chill factor to 100 degrees below zero.

·          They walked, ran and fought in snow up to their knees, often in Whiteout conditions.

Our sincere condolences to the family and friends of SSgt Eldon Heller, USMC, Korean War Veteran. May God help you though this difficult time and sorrow. He is one of America's Heroes that will never be forgotten.

Rest Safely and Securely in God's Loving Arms, Eldon.

Going home, going home,
I'm just going home.
Quiet-like, slip away-
I'll be going home.
It's not far, just close by;
Jesus is the Door;
Work all done, laid aside,
Fear and grief no more.
Friends are there, waiting now.
He is waiting, too.
See His smile! See His hand!
He will lead me through.

Morning Star lights the way;
Restless dream all done;
Shadows gone, break of day,
Life has just begun.
Every tear wiped away,
Pain and sickness gone;
Wide awake there with Him!
Peace goes on and on!
Going home, going home,
I'll be going home.
See the Light! See the Sun!
I'm just going home.

*****************MISSION***COMPLETE****************

The day today was a beautiful warm day. We had 40 bikes 2 cages and 46 PGR including Pipey whose bag pipes sounded great. At the church we set up multiple flag lines, had people directing traffic and parking. After the service started and they closed the doors most of us left for the cemetery. Dave Cox organized the escort keeping back 11 riders for a 5 man missing man and 6 for road guards. All of these riders had large flags on their bikes for high visibility. The 6 road guards road out first and held traffic at lights and then fell in at the rear, by the time they reached the cemetery the 5 man missing man was leading the procession with the six road guards taking up the rear. Good job Dave! When the procession arrived at the cemetery we had a flag line along the drive and a double line up to the internment site with Pipey doing his magic with his bag pipes. With family and friends in place and the service starting we encircled everyone with our 40 some odd flags. After the military service and I had presented our plaque to the family, Pipey played the Marine Hymn followed by Amazing Grace in which he turned and led us out, in a fade, along the drive to our bikes. I went back to thank the Funeral Director for helping us out and he said “Do you do this for every Vet?” I said “Yep but the numbers of PGR that are available always fluctuates.” He said “Can I have more cards?” Another convert!

God Bless you Eldon Heller, thank you for your service to this great country, you are a true American Hero And may God bring peace to the hearts of your loved ones.

My father, Fred Herrlich, served with 'Moose' in Korea. Dad still lives in NYC. We were speaking this very morning and he had found a picture of himself and Moose and some other marines. Dad told me a funny story that only combat vets would find amusing, and was laughing as he reminisced about his friend."You had to know Moose" he said more than once. I told dad that it was very easy to look people up on the internet, and would look up Moose for him. I will pass along the news about a good marine and friend to dad.
