Lest I keep my complacent way, I must remember that somewhere out there a person died for me today. As long as there must be war, I ask and I must answer: Was I worth dying for? From a bronze plaque at the Memorial Monument in Hillsboro, IL.

How do I say this? Let me work backkards. I was on my way
home from the State Veterans Cemetery in Bloomfield yesterday when my
cell phone rang. It was Jamie from McCombs Funeral Home. He
said 'Thank you'. I reacted with a response likewise, 'Thank you'
I said. 'No' Jamie came back, 'you see, we deal with a lot of
people, a lot of groups. Many of them offer their services and
tell us what they are going to do. With you guys, you tell us
'your on it' and it gets done. Everytime the Patriot Guard
promises to be there, that's what you do - and we don't have to lift a
finger. No ... thank you.'
I swallowed hard, not truly comfortable in these situations.
'Jamie, thank you. I'll pass this along to all of those who are
always there when I call. The folks that drop what they're doing
in a moments notice and show up, rain or shine, to honor these great
Americans.'
Jamie said please do that.
I will.
