My thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of Chief Warrant Officer 2 Donaldson. May God give you strength, courage and comfort in your time of sorrow. Our nation owes you a debt of gratitude for the service and sacrifice of your loved one.

Lest I keep my complacent way, I must remember that somewhere out there a person died for me today. As long as there must be war, I ask and I must answer: Was I worth dying for?

Local soldier’s death brings harsh reality of war home

Effingham Daily News

On the heels of an enthusiastic homecoming celebrating the safe return of the local Illinois National Guard unit, death ushered in the harsh reality of war.

An Effingham soldier, Christopher Donaldson, lost his life along with nine other military personnel when the helicopter they were in crashed in Afghanistan during military action.

The Effingham area has seen its young men and women go off to fight the war on terror since it began three years ago, but up until now our community has been spared the worst — the death of one of our own.

There have been local soldiers wounded, there have been area soldiers who have seen their fellow comrades die in combat, but Donaldson’s death brings the harshest side of war to our front doorsteps.

We weep for his family. Losing a son, a brother, a grandson is the worst life can throw at anyone.

We hope his loved ones can find solace in the fact this brave young man served us all, each and every one of us, by heeding the call of duty to his country. He died doing what he loved, flying in service to his country. Some people never find their callings in life, but Donaldson had found his niche, said his mother.

Our hearts go out to his parents, brothers, extended family and friends as they deal with their loss. We hope they will find some comfort in the fact that the community feels their heartbreak and is there to offer whatever support is needed.

Any plans for an escort from St. Louis? I would think anyone coming from St. Louis area
may have an interest in this. Myself included.

I realize this is on your way but as a rule, the State Police are the authority and they are trying to minimize the bikers on the interstate all at the same time.  I'm sure you understand.  So there will be no escort like that.

Thanks Rose, I understand. I guess every state is different. I understand they just had a escort mission in KY. That is why I asked.
Standing by for confirmed times.

Just on the Champaign side of Mahomet is the Shell station and McDonald's plaza. Depending on timing I would be happy for your company. Let's see how things are scheduled.

Coming from the North, I will be arriving Sunday and staying the night in Altamont.---F.Y.I.---- I reserved a room for myself at Knights Inn, I spoke with a Rene who confirmed she will offer us military rates (because of the situation, she realizes I am not in the service now) The rate is $34.20 for a single person. You can call directly at the Knights Inn in Altamont or you can use the 1-800-843-5644 number and save yourself a dime and they call Altamont and confirm. They attached a memo as to this is a PGR group. Will meet up with whomever at the Kelly trucking on Monday a.m., I will have my lap top with me for any further confirmation from the site.

According to Rose:

"Right now, for your plans, after briefings, we will escort the arrival of CWO2 Donaldson from the Altamont exit along Highway 40 to the funeral home tentatively scheduled for Monday. "

I'm not sure, but it seems to me that this is an escort from the airport to the funeral home. I don't know if this is also the date for the funeral service. Can someone please clarify this?

I just spoke to my Chief and he advised we are now supposed to meet at the First Baptist Church, it is just North of Kelly's truck sales, The Chief and the Sheriff's Department advised that there is alot more parking area that for everyone. Those of you staying at the Knight's Inn the First Baptist Church is right across the street from McDonalds.
