Floyd "Skipper" Matthews was a member of the American Legion, Florence-Lauderdale Post #11. I am the Historian for that Post. We recently attended his 105 birthday celebration on February 2, 2008. His actual birthdate was on February 3, 1903. He joined the US Navy at 16 years old. He lived an amazing life that deserves to be remembered and honored. It has been a privilege knowing Skipper and we will miss him.

Our sincere condolences to the family and friends of Floyd Matthews, USN, WWI/WWII Veteran. May God help you though this difficult time and sorrow. He is one of America's Heroes that will never be forgotten.

Rest Safely and Securely in God's Loving Arms, Floyd.

Going home, going home,
I'm just going home.
Quiet-like, slip away-
I'll be going home.
It's not far, just close by;
Jesus is the Door;
Work all done, laid aside,
Fear and grief no more.
Friends are there, waiting now.
He is waiting, too.
See His smile! See His hand!
He will lead me through.

Morning Star lights the way;
Restless dream all done;
Shadows gone, break of day,
Life has just begun.
Every tear wiped away,
Pain and sickness gone;
Wide awake there with Him!
Peace goes on and on!
Going home, going home,
I'll be going home.
See the Light! See the Sun!
I'm just going home.

Part 1 of this mission is complete. It was both an Honor to stand for this Hero and to meet the many friends and family that were there. I must say that this was my first mission where it snowed all the way there, while we were standing and on the way back. And we are still in Alabama. God Bless all that came and stood.

Thank you again Floyd,
Dave

My condolences to the family and friends of Floyd Mattews. It will be a great honor for me to stand for him tomorrow. I only spent a short time on a sub (USS Grayback LPSS 574) in 1971 and 1972 with 3rd Recon Bn, but enough time to understand what a hero this man is. Diesel Boats Forever.

It's a shame that we're losing the last of the World War I Veterans. There
is only one left now who served overseas for the USA---Frank Buckles.
We're losing part of our history and we must teach the younger generations
about these brave men & women who were willing to go and
serve to make this a better world. I'm thankful for the AMERICAN VETERAN who is the true
backbone of the USA. May Floyd Matthews and our other departed VETERANS rest in eternal peace.
