I am 44 years old. I have spent the majority of those years living a selfish life, with little concern for anyone else. I grew up in Fort Dodge, Iowa, I knew Sgt. Bonnell's father, but for the most part I have ignored the war, even complained about it at times, but not for concern for anyone else, rather the burden I sometimes felt it put's on me in the most shallowest of ways.

Then yesterday I read of Jon's death, a young man with far more potential as a human being than I have ever shown, far more deserving of a full and happy life, a father's son who believed in what he was doing, a father that I knew and I find myself ashamed.

The war has come home, and I have wasted twice the number of years this man was given and yet he accomplished more in his short life than I can ever hope to. At 22 he was more of a man than I will ever be or can hope to be.

I used to look at groups like yours with cynical eyes, now I must look at myself with those same eyes and I can no longer ignore what I see staring back. My prayer is that I will find the way to correct what I see.

Perhaps I'm posting to somehow alleviate the shame and guilt I feel, I don't know.

But I do know that this youg man is deserving of my respect when I deserve none myself. I also know that there are people in Fort Dodge like me that won't feel the shame I do, and I truly desire that there are people like you to face them.

I also know that today I will turn away from who I was, and I will try to find a path that leads me to a person who can say at the end of his days that I did what I can for my country and my God, lest I be called a thief for enjoying what this brave young man gave his life for all of us to enjoy.

No father should have to see his son die before him, no mother should have to suffer the loss of her son while people like me exist in this country who do not stop to think of why they are even able to live such selfish lives.

The war has come home and I will be a coward no more.

I can never repay those who served my country, but I can damn well serve them for a change.

Jon you have given all in defense of this country and our freedoms so "thank you" is not nearly enough to offer you.  Surely you have already joined your fellow Marines guarding the streets of Heaven.  We will keep your family and friends in our thoughts and prayers and hope that our gratitude will offer them some comfort.  Standing in your honor would be a great priviledge indeed.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the family, friends and fellow Marines of this fine young man.

We live in the land of the free because of the brave men and women like this fine Marine and the others who so bravely serve. It is something within them that stirs them on to great heights of achievement. Something that tells them that nothing is more important than caring for, protecting, and defending the lives of those they love. Yes, some will give everything so that the world will be a better place. Their desire and hope is that we shall honor their sacrifice and live prosperous, peaceful, and happy lives until we are reunited with them in eternal time.

To the parents of Sgt. Jon E. Bonnell, Jr, My prayer for you is peace. My hope for you is love. You have raised a fine son who is a hero to all that live without fear, to all who can make free choices, to all who have better lives because of the way he choose to live his. I respect the dreams you had for your son; yet more, I honor your sacrifice and praise you for allowing him to be the man he wanted to be. May his memory and all that he accomplished bring you peace and strength as you learn to continue on without him for a time.

Sgt. Bonnell, I along with every member of the Patriot Guard Riders humbly thank you for your service and dedication. You are a true American Hero! Your service and sacrifices will not be forgotten.

Rest easy Jon Jr, your mission is complete. The Patriot Guard Riders will proudly stand for you with honor, dignity and the respect you have so rightfully earned.

It will be my honor to be a part of the final journey home for this great American Hero.
