1st Lt Rutherford, as a nation we mourn your loss, and we will remember you always as a true American hero. We so deeply appreciate your service and sacrifice in defending and protecting our freedoms. To Christopher's family, I offer my prayers and support. I understand a little of your loss-my son was killed last year in Iraq. I pray happy memories of your dear young warrior help eventually to ease the pain you now endure. Christopher will never be forgotten-he leaves a legacy of honor and courage that few will ever achieve. God bless you. Julie Francis, Matt's Mom

Remembering 1st Lt. Rutherford

By Kate York, Special to The News

NEWPORT — The body of the Newport soldier killed Monday in Iraq was expected back in the United States late Thursday.

The U.S. Department of Defense also released the official notification Thursday of the death of Army 1st Lt. Chris Rutherford, 25, a 2000 graduate of Frontier High School and 2003 graduate of Marietta College.

Rutherford died Monday near Balad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle, the release said.

He was assigned to the Forward Support Group, 19th Engineer Battalion out of Fort Knox, Ky.

Kentucky Gov. Ernie Fletcher directed all flags at state buildings to fly at half-staff in honor of Rutherford until sunset on the day of his funeral.

Paul Morton, the Rutherford family’s pastor at Valley View Baptist Church in Reno, Ohio, said funeral arrangements are still incomplete.

"The family is waiting for a moment of closure," Morton said. "They recognize that he’s gone, but when he arrives it will be a different feeling."

Once arriving in the U.S., Rutherford will be flown to the Mid-Ohio Valley Regional Airport and then his body will be escorted first by officers from the Wood County Sheriff’s Department and then by officers from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office once across the Ohio state line, said Washington County Sheriff Larry Mincks.

"We’ll have two cars there, riding in with him," Mincks said. "It’s very appropriate that we do this."

Services will be held at Hadley Funeral Home in Reno, and Rutherford will be buried at East Lawn Memorial Cemetery.

"It will be a graveside service with full military honors," Morton said. As the family waits to make arrangements the community has surrounded them with support, Morton said.

Several days after his death, news was still reaching friends, including Army Sgt. Terry Styer Jr., another Washington County soldier stationed in the Middle East.

"Chris was always smiling no matter what happened," said Styer, a Marietta resident, via e-mail Thursday. "He bought me a race car, and I would tear it up and he would just laugh and be happy about it. I miss him and I wish I could have said goodbye."

Styer said his friend didn’t need the U.S. Army.

"The U.S. Army needed Chris Rutherford," he said.

Rutherford was on his second tour of duty in Iraq when he was killed. He had first been deployed in August 2006 and had returned home to Washington County just last month before going to Iraq again.

Fort Knox spokesman Ryan Brus said there are still few details available about the Monday attack.

He said Thursday he wasn’t aware if other soldiers were injured.

"There’s still a lot of information we don’t have," he said. "It’s a very sad thing that happened. Being right around the Fourth of July, I think it hits home even more — what they’re there for."

What Heroes Gave

Each donned their uniform to be
Defenders of our liberty

Their mission sure, their spirits bright
Guard freedom’s home, be brave to fight

One final day each faced their call
Each gave their best enduring all

We’ll never know what they went through
But know they loved this country true

Deep down inside we should all feel
What heroes gave, their cost so real

We must stay thankful, grateful of
The gift of freedom through their love

Their loved ones bore the gravest pain
What we can’t know, some now sustain

To God I pray their pain will cease
And each will find long-lasting peace

Remember this from year to year
What heroes gave – shan’t disappear

We’ll never let their special day
Their time for honor slip away

These brave fought for a nation free
If not for them, where would we be?
