First let me clear up a misunderstanding. MN Patriot Guard does print up a 4x6 card, usually with the soldiers picture and a brief obituary on one side and on the back we print our Mission Statement and other pertinent details about MN Patriot Guard, and they are passed out at all KIA missions. We have never printed up cards for veterans funerals. If you received a card while attending a funeral of a veteran, that card was either printed by the funeral home or the church. I'm sorry that I was unable to locate any cards for this mission at the church.

Mission Report

Today 22 motorcycles, 3 cages for a total of 25 people arrived at the Cenex Gas Station in Butterfield, MN. The RCIC was detained at the cemetery sweeping fine gravel from the road bed so those attending would not have an accident. Unfortunately this took much longer than I originally expected. However, when I arrived at the top of the off ramp and looked across to the parking lot, hoping to see a few motorcycles, I was rewarded with 21 bikes and 3 cages.

Ken Pederson, ARC for Worthington had the situation well in control, the ride wavers were being signed, people were informed and ready for the mission. After the pre-ride briefing we rode 3/4 of a block and parked our scoots. Walking 1/4 of a block we formed 2 flag lines, one at the front door of the church and one at the side door. We were in place at 0945 and stood in the hot sun till after the service had begin. Temp was 87 degrees and some people aren't smart enough to remember to remove their chaps, so my jeans were very damp with perspiration by the end of the day. At 1050 we reformed and were ready well before the service ended. Spec-5 Martin Westman's casket was taken from the church and loaded into the Hearst. After the family starting getting into their vehicles we broke down the flag line and hurried to our scoots.

The funeral director lead the procession, followed by the 21 scoots, 3 cages, and a final scoot acting as tailgunner thus allowing the SUV with the pallbearers to know when the Patriot Guard members vehicles ended, so he could pull in behind us. Directly behind the SUV was the Hearst, then the family and friends.

We rode the 8 miles down Highway 60 to Mt. Hope Cemetery in St. James, MN were we quickly parked our scoots and reformed the flag line. After the military honor guard presented the US Flag to the widow, as RCIC, I presented a Welcome Home Vietnam Veteran's pin to the widow and passed along Patriot Guard's condolences to her. After the last vehicle left the cemetery, we broke the flag line, and retired to Pizza Hut for some pizza. We also broke out the four Patriot Guard Riders yellow 3x5 flags, allowing those in attendance today to sign them with our sentiments for the troops, which when more members have had a chance to sign, will be sent to our troops deployed in Iraq or Afghanistan as a reminder that people back in the US support the Troops as have the other flags we've signed.

Respectfully submitted,
