My sincere condolences to the family and friends of Deputy Ron Meyer. Rest in peace, my brother LEO, and firefighter. The community lost a true hometown hero who obviously had a calling of service to his community and country.

My sincere condolences to the family, friends and community of Officer Ron Meyer.

I worked the send off Mission last summer in an effort to help out our brothers and sisters in WV. Ron Jones, now ASC of WV helped me with the logistics or should I say Ron did the logistics and then became a RC for WV. Ron worked very closely with Officer Ron Meyer and introduced me to him at the stage area for the troop send off. As a gentleman and protector of our society he was tops. A number of people that day told me what a great guy he was and a great cop. His passing is a great loss to the community.

I was proud to ride with Officer Meyer that day last summer and will consider it a priviledge to stand for him now.

                                     *********UPDATED INFORMATION*********

Just spoke w/Ron who is at work and unable to make postings at this time and want to provide some updated information on this Mission of Honor for Deputy Meyer.

Ron's family has nothing but the highest praise for the Patriot Guard Riders and what we do.  They wish us to be an "integral part" of his final services.

Although previously announced that there would be no escort at the conclusion of services, the family has requested that we participate in the procession from Kepner Funeral Home to the Valley Grove Community Center, a distance of approximately 10 miles.  At their request, we will take a position behind the family vehicle, ahead of the Blue Knights and Red Knights, for this most solemn journey.  Although we have been invited to attend the wake at the Community Center, as is our practice, we have respectfully declined so as not to interfere with their grieving process.

Although not yet confirmed, Ron is attempting to obtain permission for us to stage at the Tractor Supply Company, 6 Elm Grove Crossing Mall, Wheeling, WV  26003 (304-238-0050).  As previously stated, staging time will be 0900, ride briefing approximately 0920 and KSU @ 0930 so as to arrive at the funeral home NLT 0945.  Directions to TSC can be found at: http://tinyurl.com/34pe6e.

Current weather forecast for the Wheeling area is for Wednesday night low's around 60 with Thursday being sunny and temperatures in the mid-80's with light winds.  Please dress accordingly and have fluids on hand if possible.  We will be maintaining a flag line vigil in excess of two hours.

Continue monitoring this thread for updated information as it becomes available.  Thank you, all, for your interest in standing for Deputy Meyer and for your support.
Respects,
Joe

*********************ITINERARY CHANGE*************************

Due to the anticipated enormity of Deputy Meyer's services, the funeral has been moved from Kepner Funeral Home, across the street to St. Mark Evangelical Lutheran Church, 141 Kruger St., Wheeling, WV  26003 (304-242-3466).  Directions to here may be viewed at: http://www.stmarkluth.com/map1.html.

Again, to accomodate the amount of visitors expected to pay their final respects to Ron and his family, Thursday's visitation schedule has been moved up to 0900 instead of the originally posted 1000.  Visitation vigil will be maintained at the funeral home during the period from 0900-1115 after which we will move our flag line across the street to St. Mark's, in preparation for the services.

BECAUSE OF THIS CHANGE, STAGING TIME WILL NOW BE 0800, PRE-RIDE BRIEFING AROUND 0820 AND KSU @ 0830.

Staging location has now been CONFIRMED as previously posted.

The funeral director also has told Ron that all escorts, parking and flag line locations are being handled by the local LEO's.  We will follow their lead and instructions so as to minimize confusion.

While this will have no effect on our ability to carry out our planned mission, there is a possibility that the procession will NOT be going to the Valley Grove Community Center as previously stated.  Attempts are now being made to secure the White Palace at Wheeling Park High School, located in Oglebay Park (http://www.oglebay-resort.com/wheelingpark/directions.htm).  Confirmation of this may not occur until the morning of the services but, again, will have no direct bearing on what we are to do.

Any other updates or changes will be posted immediately.  We do apologize for having to make these changes but, as the funeral director has stated, this is the largest service they've ever handled.

Thank you for your diligence and patience.
Respects,
Joe

To all: As Joe stated, I was at work all day, but wanted to get up the postings ASAP. At this moment the itinerary remains as we have posted. Things are falling into place with a few things we will discuss at the briefing. We WILL participate in the procession. Keep an eye on this thread for any changes that may occur. Thanks for being patient. Ride safe, Ron J.

I am very sorry to say that I will be unable to attend this mission. However, my thoughts and prayers go out to the family of Ron Meyer. As a paramedic, firefighter and former 9-1-1 dispatcher, it always saddens me when I hear about the loss of one of our hometown heros. Men and women who serve in law enforcement, EMS or firefighting don't do it for the money. (Heaven knows that the best paid officer is still underpaid. ) They do it for the love of serving their community and helping those in need.

Thank you Ron for your service.

Sincerely,
Barry Bledsoe

Home safe and, basically, sound.  What a totally AWESOME turnout of PGR members, independants (but hopefully soon to be members), Blue Knights, Red Knights and members of so many Law Enforcement detachments and Volunteer Fire Companies that I couldn't begine to mention them all for fear of omitting someone.  Suffice it to say, the show of support for Deputy Meyer by all  in attendance and those in the community who took time from their busy lives to honor him as the procession made its way to Wheeling Park was nothing short of outstanding.

I'll leave the Mission Report to Ron but must offer up my own "Thank You" to each and every rider, member or not, who stood in extreme heat for a very long period of time to show Honor and Respect to Deputy Meyer and his family.  I know, without a doubt, your presence today was extremely appreciated by everyone.  A special "Thank You" to Dave Malloy, HOTH Director for PA, for providing much needed water and to Ralph for resupplying the cooler.  Thank you guys!

Patriot Guard, each of you should have left today knowing you made a difference in the lives of many, many family members and citizens of this community.  Be proud of yourself; you've earned it.

   Pictures will be posted shortly.
Respects,
Joe

Received form Ron Jones:

********************MISSION COMPLETE*************************

Upon returning home I'm still reflecting on today's mission. The PGR was well represented with 27 bikes (including 6 independent riders) and 1 cage. I am so thankful to everyone who came out to show support for this fine man. There will be a big void in our community, and it was comforting to see all you riders standing for Ron. The family was extremely thankful for our support and repeated it at the dinner reception. I presented the rest of the mission stickers to Kathy, Ron's wife and his son, Zack and they again expressed their thankfulness to the PGR. This family needed us and was glad we were there. GOOD JOB!! to all who showed today, even in the extreme heat.

Dave, thanks, brother, for the supply of water. It was a lifesaver. I thank all you guys from out of state for coming in for us. Again when it comes to showing support there are no boundaries in the PGR.

Joe, thanks, man, for getting the posts up for me so everyone could keep updated on what seemed to be hourly changes. I think it all came together quite nice. Thanks for your help.

To all the officers of the Wheeling Police Department and Ohio County
Sheriff's Department, Thank you. You guys are a class act and were very easy to work with.

To the Wheeling Fire department, thank you. Again, you guys are top-notch and it was an honor to work with you guys in paying respects to Ron. Amid all the changes and adjustments made through the day, working together made it a nice ceremony.

Zack, Godspeed our friend, and we ride with you as you finish your tour.

Cathy, thank you for giving us the opportunity to stand for Ron. It was the least we could do for you, Ron, and the family. God be with you.

Ron, gonna miss ya.

Ride safe,
Ron J.

For those unable to view the local Wheeling television station, there is an excellent news report of the services for Deputy Meyer.  They did get the names backwards on those they were interviewing (Joe Barker & Ron Jones) but most of us can tell who Ron is anyway!!
