Have attempted contact with the assigned CAO, CWO Harbison, but could only leave message requesting he return my call.

Did speak with the funeral home that will be handling arrangements, Hastings Funeral Home, 153 Spruce St., Morgantown, WV 26505 (304) 292-8664.  Director states he, too, has been informed by the family that there may be a delay in Daniel's return home.  As he has been maintaining contact with the family, he will make our presentation to them, offering our assistance and participation in Daniel's services.

If this becomes a Confirmed Mission, Barry Bledsoe and John Schwartz will be co-Ride Captains.

Respects,
Joe

****************THIS IS NOW A CONFIRMED MISSION*******************

I spoke with the CAO this afternoon and PGR participation IS invited and welcomed by the family of Spc Mehringer.

At the present time, all that is known for sure is that services will be held Monday, May 7 in St. Francis DeSales Catholic Church, 1 Guthrie Lane, Morgantown, WV 26508 (304) 296-5353.  Time of services has yet to be established but more information should be available this evening.

CWO Harbison advises Daniel will be returning home via charter jet to Morgantown Municipal Airport, 100 Hart Field Road, Morgantown, WV on Friday, May 4, 2007.   PGR particiipation in escorting Daniel to the funeral home may be requested but, again, I should know more this evening.

As a sidenote, Daniel's Father, Howard, is very military oriented, being a helicopter pilot during the Vietnam conflict.

Continue watching this thread for more information as it becomes available.

Respects,
Joe

Spc Mehringer, as a nation we mourn your loss and we will remember you always as a true American hero. We so deeply appreciate your service and sacrifice for our country. To Daniel's family I offer my prayers and support. I understand a little of your grief-my son was killed last year in Iraq. I hope happy memories of your dear warrior help eventually to ease the pain you endure today. Daniel will never be forgotten-he leaves a legacy of honor and courage that few will ever achieve. God bless you. Julie Francis, Matt's Mom

************************************MISSION INFO******************************************
I spoke with CWO Harbison this morning. Currently the specifics regarding what services the family would like for us to provide are up in the air. The tentative plan is for Spc. Mehringer to arrive at the Morgantown Airport on Friday, possibly at 1300 hrs. We do not yet know if the family would like for us to provide an escort from the airport to the funeral home. At best, that escort would be a short notice mission.

The funeral services are scheduled for Monday. Again, we do not know how much participation we will have, as the family has not indicated. I will post as soon as I know anything.

John Schwartz will be working with me as a co-ride captain on this mission, so I may ask him to post info as well.

Thank you for your participation and patience.

+++++++++++UPDATE ON MISSION++++++++++++++++ Per CWO Harbison, the mother of Spc. Mehringer, who is making all of the arrangments, wants everything to be low key. She will not stop anyone who shows up at the airport on Friday at 1300 hrs. but beyond that, PGR is not specifically invited. I informed CWO Harbison that we do not push ourselves on anyone, so as of now there are no plans for PGR to provide escort at the airport. There is also a chance that we will not be invited to the funeral services on Monday. However, that is still up in the air. He will be able to confirm on that issue on Thursday. The mother of Spc. is taking this very hard, as would be expected. We will do everything we can to express our condolences, in person if permitted, or simply via these posts otherwise. I will post again on Thursday as soon as I know anything. Thank you for your patience. Continue to pray for the family and friends. Barry Bledsoe RC Fairmont, WV 304-692-6900

To all who are following this thread, please be aware that we are doing everything possible to secure the necessary information to allow us to carry out our mission.

The situation is much more fluid than intially thought as we were extended the invitation to participate in all portions of Daniel's services by the CAO.  Since that time, the situation has deteriorated somewhat, to the point that the invitation may be rescinded.  This is through NO fault of our RC but, rather, the unfortunate results of a divided family.

If the invitation has not been confirmed by tomorrow afternoon, we will have no other alternative that to stand down from this mission.

Please accept my apologies for any confusion this may have caused.

Respects,
Joe

Per CWO Harbison, the mother of Spc. Mehringer, who is making all of the arrangments, wants everything to be low key. She will not stop anyone who shows up at the airport on Friday at 1300 hrs. but beyond that, PGR is not specifically invited.
Folks, I understand the needs and desires of all who have expressed a willingness to stand for Spc Mehringer and his family to have the necessary information provided as soon as possible to make their plans.

Please know this; our Ride Captains are working diligently to get the information we all are looking for but, short of forcing ourselves upon this grieving family, their hands are tied.

As the CAO stated, Daniel's Mother will not stop anyone who shows up at the airport on Friday, but, since we have not received an official invitation to provide escort, we will NOT be doing so as the PGR.

If Barry has not heard from the CAO by 1400 today (Thursday), he will call him back and if they are still leaning toward rescinding the invitation to participate  in his final services, we will Stand Down from the mission.

As is always the case, we do only what the family wishes or, as may be the case here, what they do not wish.

I thank you for your patience and diligence and hope all understand the situation we are dealing with here.

Respects,
Joe

First I would like to thank all of you for your kind letters regarding my son Daniel. I wanted to let you know as Daniel's father that I know he would be honored to have all of you present. He loved being a paratrooper, and had plans to become a helicopter pilot, and was in the process of applying to Warrant Officer School.  Also, I have to correct the statement about me. I was a helicopter pilot in Vietnam not a medic.

*******************UPDATE******************** As posted earlier, we have set mid-afternoon today (Thursday) as the deadline to confirm this mission. As Joe mentioned in a previous post, I also apologize for the confusion. We originally thought we had a definite confirmed mission to provide tribute to SPC Mehringer. However, things seem to be changing almost hourly. Joe and I have both sent emails to the father of SPC Mehringer, expressing our thoughts and prayers. We also let him know that we stand ready if requested to provide tribute, but at the same time, we do not activate if the family does not desire for us to be there. I realize that some of you have indicated your intent to travel from as far away as New York and Virginia should this come to fruition, and that you need as much time as possible to prepare. That is why we have made 2:00 today a deadline. If we have no confirmation by that time, we will stand down. We will still pay tribute to SPC Mehringer via the website thread. I know from reading the post, that Daniels father is reading and appreciates the expressions from members nationwide. Thank you for your patience and service.
