I spoke with SGM Becher last night for about ten minutes, mostly elaborating on what Joe had spoken to him about. If the family wishes for the PGR to provide honor for Pvt. Slater, I will be assuming RC duties for this mission. SGM Becher promised to get with me late this afternoon or early evening to let me know about the wishes of the family.
I will post to this forum and call our SC immediately with that information. Stay tuned. Barry Bledsoe, RC Fairmont, WV |

As Barry stated above, he has graciously accepted RC duties should this become a confirmed mission. Word should be forthcoming this afternoon or evening.
For those who have not seen the news report or posting in the Mission thread, Michael was in the Army less than one year and died 30 days after arriving in Iraq.
You can read more about him in this morning's Charleston Gazette at:
Please continue watching the Mission thread for further updates.
Respects,
Joe |

i spoke with SGM Becher this evening about the family's wishes. At this time, we have no FIRM information to provide.
Please understand this is a VERY traumatic time for Michael's family to be enduring and they have had many things thrown at them all at once.
We do know that Michael has returned to American soil, arriving at Dover AFB. His return to West Virginia is still not known at this time, but early indications are the services will either be Saturday & Sunday, or Sunday & Monday.
Due to the time constraints involved for those expressing their desire to stand in Honor of Michael, I informed SGM Becher we desired to have confirmation by tomorrow evening at the latest.
Please continue watching this thread for further updates. Respects, Joe |

CONFIRMED MISSION!!!
As of about an hour ago, this has moved from a watched mission to a CONFIRMED MISSION. This thread will be moved to the confirmed mission area. Although more details are to be worked out, the viewing will be Saturday from 6:00 to 8:00 PM with funeral services on Sunday at 2:30 PM. Funeral services and the gravesite will be at the same location, so there will be no actual escort that we are used to. I am not at my own computer right now. I will be talking to Sgt. Major Becher later, as well as the funeral home, to make further arrangements. I will post as soon as I know more. Mostly likely the newest information will post this evening around 9:00 PM and again tomorrow morning (Thursday) around 10:00.
I apologize for the sketchy info, but I am not able to make phone calls for roughly another few hours.

Please note corrected address for Tyler Mountain Gardens and Funeral Home is 5233 Rocky Fork Road, Cross Lanes, WV 25313.
We will stand flagline vigil during visitation hours on Saturday. Attempts are being made, now, to locate suitable accomodations in the area for those traveling in from other states.
Staging times and locations will be provided by Barry Bledsoe shortly.
Continue tracking this thread for updates. Respects, Joe |

Directions to Tyler Mountain Funeral Home are as follows:
From the west, take I-64 east to Exit 47. At the end of the ramp, turn right onto Rt. 622, aka Golf Mountain Road. From the east, take I-64 west to Exit 47B. The exit ramp will automatically dump you onto Rt. 622. Continue on 622. After crossing Rt. 62, the road remains 622, but the name changes to Big Tyler Road. Eventually, you will cross a bridge over "Rocky Fork Creek." Rt. 622 will take a hard left, and become "Rocky Fork Road." The funeral home is just a little ways up this road.
Joe is working on getting some hotel rooms at a discounted rate. I will post around noon tomorrow with more details about what services we will provide to the family. There will be no escort to the cemetary, as we are used to doing, as the cemetary and the funeral home are at the same location.
Looking at the weather forcast, there is only a 30% chance of rain for Saturday, and the forecast is for mostly sunny on Sunday with temps at or near 70 both days. Since the weather looks good, and the services are on the weekend, I hope we can have a good turnout to honor this soldier and his family.
Feel free to email me directly with any other questions at "fyrefighter814@aol.com."

Numerous calls have been made to motels in Cross Lanes in an effort to obtain group or discounted room rates for those traveling in from far distances.
Up to this point, the only one in Cross Lanes that would CONFIRM a room rate is the Comfort Inn, 102 Racer Drive, offering a government rate of $85.31 per night, total, but there are a limited number of rooms available. Anyone wishing to take advantage of this rate should call (304) 776-8070 and request the government rate.
Did make contact with the Days Inn of Hurricane, exit 39 on I-64, who provided the PGR with discounted room rates for our recent Mission for Spc Joshua Wilcoxen. They advised they will offer the same discounted rate of $40.00 per night, plus tax, for those wishing to stay there. This, according to MapQuest, is located about 5 miles from Cross Lanes and is located behind the Liberty Square Mall. Anyone wishing to make reservations here should call (304) 729-3006 and tell them you're with the Patriot Guard Riders, or PGR.
No other motel I contacted was able to provide any information on discounted or group rates tonight. |
