*********************FINAL ITINERARY***********************
Scouted the area today and, as previously announced, staging will be at 1130 in the area just outside of Middlebourne, on the left hand side of the road. Those approaching on Route 18 South, this is located a short distance past the Witchey's Supermarket on your right. Those coming in on Route 18 North, proceed through town and we'll be located on the right hand side of the road, just before the city Cemetery.
Permission has been received to park directly across from the funeral home.
We will do our briefing at 1145, then ride in to be in our flag line NLT 1200. Funeral services are expected to last approximately 30 minutes, after which we will provide escort to the cemetery. This is a distance of about 20 miles and, at present time, will be done under escort by the Tyler County Sheriff's Department.
For all those travelling in on two wheels on Route 18 South, PLEASE be extra cautious when approaching the clearly marked Detour. The turn into this is marked at 15MPH and goes onto a temporary bridge that has a STEEL BOTTOM. This could be slippery in the morning.
Anyone coming in on Route 18 from either direction that is unfamiliar with this road, please be aware that it contains many, many curves, most of which are posted with a recommended 'safe' speed. The vast majority of these curves mean exactly that. Please exercise caution.
All out of state attendees, remember, West Virginia IS a helmet state!
Thank you for support in honoring this American War Veteran. Respects, Joe |

The Lord brushed away all the dreary signs of winter today as family and friends gathered on a West Virginia hillside to say goodbye to a spouse, father, grandfather and friend. He now sits with the Lord and those that were left behind must remember that he is only as far away as your heart. Thank you to the Gorrell for permitting us to be a part of your life today.

**********************MISSION REPORT************************
The day began very, very cold for most everyone planning to attend this Mission of Honor for one of America's Veterans from the, occasionally and unfortunately referred to, "Forgotten Era". Men like Mr. Gorrell, those before him and those that have followed him should never, ever be forgotten for their service to this great country.
To be quite honest, I had no idea how many members we would have standing for Jim. I was expecting/hoping for 4, yet we ended up having 5 bikes and 1 cage.
We took our place outside the funeral home under bright, warming skies and held vigil until the beginning of services.
Upon completion, we fell in behind the Tyler County Sheriff for an escort, at parade speed, to Jim's final resting place approximately 20 miles away.
A very moving service took place at the cemetery, led by Heroes of previous conflicts, those members of the local American Legion and VFW posts. A very crisp 21-gun salute followed by a perfect rendition of taps concluded the services and signalled an end to our participation.
To begin my "Thank Yous", I MUST start with each and every PGR member who braved the cold to attend this Mission of Honor. Jim Travis, Ohio RC from Cleveland, Bob Smith from Hurricane, WV, Gary Gaskins, WV Ride Captain from Falling Waters, WV, George and Pat Gross from the New Stanton, PA area and Dave Johnson from St. Mary's, WV who was attending his first mission. Thank you also goes to Paula for accompanying me today. Without each and every one of you, this mission would have been less than the success that it was. The effort each one of you put forth to make this mission a success is appreciated more than any of you will ever know.
Additional, special, "Thank Yous" must be given to Mr. Dave Furbee, director of Furbee Funeral Home for his assistance, co-operation and accomodating of all of us today and to Clay Hupp, Tyler County Sheriff for helping to ensure our safe travels from Middlebourne to Friendly, WV.
To the gentlemen of the local American Legion and VFW posts, I, personally, have never observed a sharper honor guard and firing squad. You are all to be thanked for your service to our country and the Honor and Respect you paid to one of your own.
To all in attendance today, know this beyond any doubt. You accomplished two things that very, very important. First and foremost, you showed one of America's Veterans and his family that his service has not been forgotten and did not go unappreciated. Secondly, you showed the people of "small town America" that the Patriot Guard Riders is NOT a 'biker gang' as some had previously thought.
Mission accomplished ladies and gentlemen. My humble, sincere thanks to all of you.
Rest in eternal peace Jim. You and your service shall never be forgotten by a grateful Nation. Respects, Joe |
