Below is a link to the few pictures I took during today's mission for Paul Sandmeyer.  It was truly an honor and a priviledge to stand for this man whose life touched so many others.

Mission Report:

Today we gathered in 16 degree weather with 22 mph winds to honor a great American hero, Sgt. Paul J. Sandmeyer, 61, Vietnam Veteran. Twenty-five brave soles showed up for flag line duty and some other PGR members opted to forgo the flag line and attended the funeral as close personal friends of Paul. Various veterans groups from all over Minnesota has members attending the funeral.

As people arrived for the visitation they would stop and talk to us as we stood on the flag line. We heard stories about how Paul decided the time had come for the Vietnam Veterans of Watonwan County Minnesota to be Welcomed Home, so he organized it, and how much it had impacted the veterans lives to experience that welcome home. There were members of the National Duster Quads Searchlight Association (DQS) in attendance from all over the US as Paul was the National Vice President of that group. And we heard how after attending LCpl. Robert Posivio III's mission ( Welcome. MN, 03 Jun 06) he was so taken by witnessing so many people wearing red that day to honor Robert's memory, that he returned home and started Red Friday (people wearing red) as a way for people to show support to the troops. In looking at the pictures displayed in the fellowship hall while warming up, I recognized Paul, having seen him at missions before, although he was never a member of PGR. He sold t-shirts at the business he ran in town, and took the money he made from t-shirts and made up care packages which he sent to our troops in the sandbox.

The church although large for the size of the community was standing room only for the funeral.

After the funeral we attempted to rush out to the cemetery to establish a flag line and greet the people as they arrived. We were not able to get this done, sometime the best plans run a muck, but we did set up the flag line as soon as we arrived at the cemetery and remained there till the last car drove away.

Today we truly honored an American Hero. A gentleman who put others ahead of himself. A gentleman who saw a wrong and corrected it. A gentleman who impacted the lives of those around him. We as Americans are a little poorer tonight, with the loss of Paul Sandmeyer, but at the same time greatly enriched by his examples.

Thanks for your nice mission report, George, and the picture link, Dale. The Flags sure show up with the "snow white" background.

We can't all do everything, but we can all do something. Mr. Sandmeyer was living testimony to that.

Avatar picture taken at Hector, Mn., Municipal Airport, where a T33 was erected in memory of my first cousin and best friend, Capt Robert C. Swanson, USAF, who died in service to his country in 1978, and in whose memory I ride with the PGR, to honor all who have served our nation.

I want to say "Thank You" to George for your dedication and leadership. Missions like these would not be possible without people like you. Thank you too, to everyone that turned out Saturday morning to brave the cold and do the right thing. Although it's never fun under the given circimstances for why we meet, it was again an honor to stand by your side in support of the family of another true American Hero. Thanks. ~Shari Stadther - Bird Island, MN
